  • This is a Sudoku that I saw on a video entitled “One Of The Best Classic Sudokus Ever” on the CZcams channel Cracking the Cryptic. Before I watched Simon Anthony solve it, I wrote the “givens” on a Sudoku board and found my own solution. I was then fascinated to see how differently he solved it. He kept saying what a beautiful Sudoku it was, and this made me think that the better the Sudoku, the more paths there might be to a solution. This one is complex in its design and yet also elegant in its ultimate simplicity.
Simon followed the strategy of noting when there were two or three candidates for a given cell and working to eliminate all but one of them. Along the way, he used Snyder Notation (what I at first called the “only two cells” method on this channel until I learned it already had this name). I followed the strategy of seeing a Sudoku as nine interlocking number grids. But in this case, there were also many places where two numbers could go in only two cells, and this played a key role at one point in the solution, as in order to avoid a "Gordonian Rectangle," I had to break up one such potential combination, and that helped moved things forward.
If you find my approach of interest, go over to Cracking the Cryptic and look at Simon Anthony's approach as well and compare the two solutions. As he explains, the puzzle was contributed by one of his viewers who saw it in a magazine while traveling in Asia. The magazine apparently did not give the name of the author. I feel that using it in an educational demonstration video on a non-commercial site can reasonably considered “fair use” in terms of copyright, but I would still like to credit the author of this fine puzzle and ask permission if possible. If anyone has tracked him or her down, please give the name in a comment. Thank you.
