- Growing a garden always involves some maintainence work and chief among them is pruning. The act of pruning frees up a lot of energy for the plants and it also helps to maintain optimal health by removing any dead or diseased leaves. In this video I introduce some of the ways I prune: tomatoes, peppers, squash, melons, strawberries, flowers, herbs, and how I manage powdery mildew.

Its a good method if you commonly struggle with powdery mildew, if its growing without issue you can be less aggressive with the pruning.

Powdery mildew can be controlled with grapefruit seed extract. Mix 1 tablespoon GSE per 2 gallons water. Use a wetting agent or 2 drops biodegradable soap.
I haven't tried GSE that is an interesting one I will have to look into it!
Friend of mine let her huge bush of cat nip flower in her backyard. It was beautiful AND loaded with pollinators! The bees were thrilled!
I had no idea that would happen. I’m so excited for them to keep growing (also to get some homemade fresh catnip 😊)

I like that you cover these kinds of ins and outs of gardening. Sometimes I am pondering whether I should prune something, beyond just cleaning it up and your examples encourage me to listen to my own judgement. If I turn out to be wrong, as I always say, gardening is just one long experiment. 😅 or as sports fans say, there is always next year. Keep growing!
Exactly, going with your gut is the best way to learn, even if you make a mistake you know what works and what didn't.

I totally agree with pruning parts of tomato plants that don't have access to the sun and the wind, especially when you decide not to remove suckers. I did that mistake and now all of my tomato plants are rotting. I had a lot of fruits and now all of them will go to waste, because of that one dumb mistake.
It can be frustrating especially when they start growing really quick and you aren't keeping up.

Once August arrives the tomatoes start getting blight because we get fog around then. I trim off all branches that show signs to slow it down and get air flow. Don’t work with tomatoes if they are wet as it spreads disease.
If you want more hollyhocks save the seeds or plant them right away as they flower the second year.

My strawberry and bell pepper plants were a total flop this year. The plants get flowers then fall off. My tomatoes plants are producing a small amount of tomatoes. I attribute all of this to 100%+ temperatures for five weeks straight.
Same issue with my raspberries and pepper harvests. My early season strawberries gave me some fruit.
That's what I'm dealing with right now. Thankfully I got some good harvests in the spring. I hope it cools off soon before all my fall transplants die.

I’ve used shade cloth in the past. But nothing you can do about the temperature.
I think a lot of us are having a similar summer. Even in the "cooler" mountains of New Mexico, it was very hot for longer than usual, and our monsoons were very wimpy. Some things really took off though. Cherries, peaches and grapes. What were some of your nice surprises during these hot weeks?
I definitely need to prune more, especially tomatoes.
What an extremely well timed video! I live in Texas zone 8B and have a Greenstalk filled with strawberries. The weeks and weeks of triple digit temperatures have just beaten them down. I provide shade cloth and water regularly. All the videos I’ve seen talk about overwintering, and I’m literally trying to over summer them!
Haha, over summering is a new one to me, you all in the south have a whole different beast of a garden to tame!

My tomatoes I decided to only prune on an as needed basis, if there wasn’t disease, I left them. That worked great up until recently when we had a week of nonstop rain and high heat and humidity, so I barely even went out to check on them and now disease is absolutely devouring the leaves on the lower 2/3 of my plants. I went through and cut off everything below the top foot/foot and a half a few days ago. It seems like maybe the fruit are ripening slower now, but they’ve put on quite a bit more vertical growth and new leaves and flowers, so I’m sure they’ll be going crazy again in a week or teo
Yeah pretty much, once you prune back heavily they will slow for a bit but as you said the new growth will eventually resupply the plant and it will be back to normal
ow man ... strawberries this year ... exploded ;) Just today i started and finished (5 hours later!) pruning 200 old plants and potting (runner attached on main plant) 40 new plants. Im just glad im done... tomorrow.... sigh... i got 1.5m2 full of rhubarb that need to be harvested!
That sounds exciting. My 3 strawberry plants in a shallow 11-in pot have gone crazy and I have over 30 plants scattered across the back deck now. Probably 7 to 10 more runners showing now too. I've left everything attached still in hopes of sharing energy between them all to further expand. We'll see.
Wow that sounds amazing! My rhubarb plant is quite tiny this year but I am looking forward to a bigger harvest next year!
planted 18 rhubarb plants this year... 2 didnt survive... and 5 are underwhelming (thinner stems)... but the rest is thumb+ thick@@jacquesinthegarden
I am so glad to see how you are pruning. I have a bed of sweet potatoes that deer keep using as a salad bar. After seeing this video I have hope they are leaving enough foliage to support the potatoes through harvest.
There is a good chance they will be able to bounce back, it may just be a smaller yield!

Pruning was the theme of my day, today😂. I let my tomatoes get out of control so I was on a mission. I also took back a lot of my yard that my Zapallito squash had taken over - and yes, developed some powdery mildew. Much more pruning is needed but my composter is full. I need to wait until some of that breaks down. You always have great content!

It is painful but in return I will be gift with late summer blooms.
I try to get my aunt to understand she's not killing her squash varieties by pruning under fruit growth, but she just won't do it 😂
It can be hard to accept at first, but the results speak for themselves!
@@jacquesinthegarden I'm also growing zucchini in the same garden and make sure I prune them after I get a harvest or when the leaves start to look unhealthy. I originally told her about pruning because she was only getting male flowers on her crookneck squash. She had about 7 grow, only one harvested and the rest died off in a heat wave.
I am starting to notice she's more for aesthetics than function of her plants. When she does prune, she cuts only about half of what should be gone, and when she asks me to prune, it's when she won't be home to see all the missing leave a dried up flowers.

I live in San Diego and hate powdery mildew! I know I have to learn to live with it but it's my nemesis every year!
Sometimes you get caught with your guard down thinking "Looks like it won't be here this year!" Then you wake up the next day and its everywhere

Oh no! Nematodes! So you helped me identify what is wrong in my veggie garden. Question then, does brassicas help to rid the root know nematodes? I will plant some French marigolds also. Crazy I have never seen or heard of them before.

Great video! Very helpful! From everything you pruned, what can go into the compost and what shouldn’t?
Unidentifiable disease shouldn't go in and unknown plant death can be a sign of something you don't want in your compost. If you actively get hot compost with a lot of turning things like powdery mildew can be fine to compost as they should die back in the process.
Regarding strawberry runners - any idea how early/small you can cut/remove them from the mother plant (and put them in shallow water) and still have a decent success change of the runners rooting?
I like to wait until they get tiny bumps forming on the base of the runner plant. That seems to guarantee success!

We have a nasty heatwave come through up here in Portland Oregon.. we had a week of 95-105 degree days. My tomatoes barely survived even with daily watering and cool spray downs. What is your advice for heat waves? 😫

You wrap up squash with foil? I would like to know more about it please cuz all my squash plants died.
He put the foil around the stem where it comes out of the ground to discourage vine borers If you have this problem you can easily see the hole in the stem
Thank you, I always learn something new. I’ve gardened since I was very young. My mother had a huge vegetable garden every year and I loved it.
I started my own tomatoes this year. Determinate ones.Well two plants went completely berserk! They’re supposed to be a lower growing tomato, which is what I wanted. But those two went so tall and out of control that I pulled one out. A four foot plant, three tomatoes on it. My question is, were those two plants growing in a spot that had more manure in that spot or do you think I got the wrong seeds? I’ve been tempted to try espalier with a few of my tomatoes next year. Would it be worth my time to do that? I live in zone 3. So I can only play around so much and then I run out of time. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise, much appreciated ❤.

@@gingerdean1521 Hmm, I’m still wondering if I got seeds for a different tomato. It would be alright except it’s all plant and nothing to show for it. Darn, I was going to make salsa and tomato soup. I love home processed tomato soup 😋. I was thinking of trying Roma’s next year. I can’t tell my daughter that, when I talk about next year’s garden she just rolls her eyes 😂
Its possible that they got TOO much Nitrogen from the compost and that spurred on a lot of quick growth leading to tall tomatoes with fewer fruit on them! Some determinates are taller as well so that can't be fully avoided.
You said you would come back to the strawberry suckers and something else you can do with them. Did you forget? I have been struggling trying to root the suckers off the plant (don't have any pockets available at the suckers, but want to start the suckers. Any advice? I "suck" at this... :)
Oof, sorry I totally forgot. You can cut them off and place them in a shallow dish of water and they will naturally root out, keep this in part shade. Once you see a few roots you can transplant them into a small pot and keep them part shaded and then slowly work them out into full sun before transplanting into their final spot.
I get powdery mildew on my hydroponic zucchini which is soilless. This fungus is relentless
It can come in from the wind so it is almost pointless to fight it sometimes
When you pruning do you save any seeds?
This is a cool vid; when in doubt, pull it! Why chance your plant's health? Looks bad, gone. I do not know why I have not seen more of your videos, you sho well, & have good information. **** :-)

I only remove the suckers I can't support, otherwise I just let them keep going and support whatever is possible.
@@jacquesinthegarden thank you! I pruned for the first time this year, learning from all the youtubers, and I'm not sure how I feel about it lol. Yes, some of my tomato's were bigger and I could get more in my raised beds, but definitely needed the shade cloth, and had lower production. And it's easier to pull them out when diseased etc. My second wave of tomato's I planted (because I had extra plants that I ran out of people to give to), I just left alone and are quite happy :)
Thanks for the pruning advice. I noticed you grow the squash on the ground have you tried keeping the squash vertical? Just curious what your opinion is.
I do a bit of both, grow vertical is nice for the airflow and ease of picking but often times I do like to just let them ramble about and get the most sun they can find.

My grape tree that I planted a year ago was fruiting and when I went to water it was all gone, is there anything I can do to save some of the fruit next time around God's willing
It is probably birds of rodents as they love grapes. You can use "Organza" or mesh bags to fully seal in the fruit and slow down or eliminate the problem that way.

Our tomatoes this year have been a struggle right from the start. Finally got them to
grow and put on numerous clusters of fruit. San Marzano II, indeterminate.
Temps and Rain have been on a never ending roller coaster. Question,
the plants are about 4-5' tall, with quite a few clusters going on a month old with no
signs of ripening, and yet still putting on flowers. We are in Maine 5b and 1st
average frost is last week of September. Any advise on forcing ripening?
Snip new blooms? top plants? Last year we harvested almost 100lbs, this year
it looks like we'll end up with 40lbs. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
You can for sure top them and allow them to focus on the fruiting. It may be worth removing the flowers that are forming now unless you want green tomatoes as they won't likely ripen in time. Otherwise once the frost comes just go ahead and harvest everything and the ones with slight color will ripen indoors nicely.

Powdery mildew Question - because its everywhere and also increases with heat & humidity ( FL 9b), do you compost leaves with powdery mildew that you remove? Thank you in advance!
I’m not jaque but I can answer this. It will be fine as compost. Powder mildew only survive on living plants. And the compost process if done correctly would kill any fungus in the mix. I hope this helped

Like @noahleealexandra2052 said, powdery mildew can die in compost only if it is "Hot composted" properly. That means the pile needs to be actively turned often and it needs to hit 135-150 multiple times in between turning. If you do a static cold pile its best to not compost it.

It was to combat squash vine borer, a common pest that often times attacks the base of your vine by burrowing in and turning it to mush.
I understand the impulse to teach us, but we're really just here to see you steal Kevin's onions, chokes, and fruit when he isn't looking
