    Premier Guitar was allowed an in-depth look at the touring rig of Jesse Keeler, the bass player in Death From Above 1979. Keeler has inspired a devout following of bass players to take on a new role in punk, and his unique approach to gear has helped solidify DFA’s sound and propel them into cult status.
    After being a longtime Rickenbacker user, Keeler is now very comfortable with a ’69 Dan Armstrong. He likes the short scale, 24-fret design, which better suits his playing style and approach than anything he’s ever played.
    A ’71 tags along as a backup, and the only mod is a “permanent” bridge to keep his intonation constant.
    Keeler also utilizes a vintage JUNO-60 keyboard which runs through his rig as well.

    "It's valueless to me if I can't use it." - This right here is why I respect collectors who use their collection. Yes, it is rare due to age, but if not used is it really doing anything? Also why I love faithful reissues.

    I really like this rundown, and the rig. I appreciate that this guy just gives zero fucks about prestige and goes with cheap, "un-cool" gear to get his personal sound.

    this guy's been such an inspiration for me growing up. His "I don't care what you think is cool, as long as it works" attitude is on point. A real professional. Anyone can add stuff. A pro knows how to whittle things away until only the pure essence remains. And I've always loved people who play a "dirty" bass. A bass like a lead instrument, instead of just a backing reinforcement sound (a glorified human octaver pedal for the lead guitarist).

      @@tysonrinker5958 Even in Germany, where those amps not have been used so often, you can have those old Peavey Mk III and IV for between € 200,-- and 300,--. Even the great sounding Peavey 215" cabs are on the market for a steal. This comes because big and heavy gear is abandoned from stages, everybody is having lightweight cabs and amps.
      Except me. I love the sound of big iron solid state and tube amps, and I love 215" or 810" cabs.
      Just bought a Peavey Tmax. Great sound with the preamp tube driven into saturation.
      Even the lightweight Tecamp L 810 (80 lbs) or the L 215 (60 lbs) are cheap.
      I just have one Class D amp, a Genzler Magellan 800, l use for gigs with rented backline. You never know what crappy amp you'll find on stage. Only one of two channels work, and mostly the wrong one, knobs are missing, DI out does not work, you name it.

    The Peavey Festival 800B is rated 410 watts at 2 ohms, 260 watts at 4 ohms and 150 at 8 ohms. A manual for it is available on Peavey's site (go to Support, manuals and then the link for discontinued products at select the letter F at the top and it's the first one 800B/800G).

    "Don't know how many times you can screw out of lucite". For soft stuff like plastic, you put a helical (threaded insert) in, its a metal barrel that new bolts can then screw into. That way when you adjust the bolt, it's now wearing against the helical, not the plastic. You'll see them a lot in laptop cases, for example, because screwing onto raw plastic would wear super quickly and is very weak.

    So does he always have his chorus on to use it as a divider or will it work when it is off too?

    • @maibeid5112
      @maibeid5112 Před 9 lety

      I think it works even if it's off because I have a boss te-2 with stereo output and it works even if it's off

    • @Collinheck
      @Collinheck Před 9 lety

      Is it quite? Because I also have the ABY splitter that he uses for guitar/synth. And if you use that to run into two amps it makes noise. So I am looking for a better way to do it.

    • @maibeid5112
      @maibeid5112 Před 9 lety

      well the te-2 is an echo pedal I really dig it, when you are not using it yo can still use the stereo out put it doesn't make any noise but like any long pedalboard you will get some signal loss even if your pedals are true bypass , there are a lot of pedals with stereo output so maybe if you are looking for example for a echo pedal and you want to split your signal you can get a pedal with stereo output and you'll have killed two birds with one shot, you can also use a signal splitter thats more expensive if you are looking for a professional one like the lehle p-split II but for me a stereo pedal its perfect since I don't do any switching between the amps the two of them are always on, but if you want to switch between amps an AB is better for that

    • @Collinheck
      @Collinheck Před 9 lety

      Awesome. Thank you. What I might go for is buy a stereo pedal and in the line to one amp I don't always want on. I will put in a pedal backwards or with the volume down or something to make a kill switch of sorts.

    • @maibeid5112
      @maibeid5112 Před 9 lety

      or if you have a tuner you can do this, put the stereo pedal, one output goes to your amp and then the next one goes to your tuner, a lot of tuners kill the signal path so it won't go to the other side the when you want it on you turn your tuner off .... or you could buy a kill switch pedal XD JHS has a very good one but there are probably better or cheeper ones out there

      Absolutely worth seeing live. I'm normally a death metal guy, but DFA was the heaviest, loudest, most intense and energetic show I've ever seen, bar none. Recordings don't come close to doing them justice... See them! there's nothing else like it.

      +delnuggets Saw them at Voodoo Fest 2014, end of October. Little girls who came to ogle Jared Leto and Alex Turner were up front at the stage for DFA1979. They were holding their ears and whining. It made it even more enjoyable for me, in addition to rattling my bones for days afterwards. FANTASTIC. My favorite band from that day on.

      At this point I’ve heard it all when it comes to stoner bass, and no disrespect that style is great, but Jesse’s approach to bass playing is actually refreshing

And you know what they say about two piece bands. They're always together even in interviews!
