This is with out a doubt, one of the most fun RC aircraft I own. I'm primarily a quad pilot, but this thing is amazing. Can fly in the typical yard in quad mode or will scream in airplane mode. In fact I ordered another one. There is one thing. I strongly suggest upgrading the motor servos to metal ones. I came in and clipped my neighbors house. Not a bad crash but destroyed the servo gears on one motor. Since I sell plastics for a living, these gears are generally made from Acetal. The same materials used in your faucet. The problem, Acetal has no ductility or toughness. They basically shatter.
I totally agree. Metal Gear Servos are a must. BTW, I fixed mine and have flown it again...what a FUN VTOL!!!

I have next to no (successful) experience with operating anything RC that flies and don't really know much about the costs etc. but it sure looks fun! I do have a small RC Millennium Falcon quad toy and a Black Hawk Helicopter but that's really about it..I'm sure no pilot lol. If I can't fly it at least I could look at it from time to time lol :-)
Those are the type of items that are fun to play with for a while, but when you really get into it, you'll have 75 of them sitting around taunting you when the weather is crappy ;) LOL

@@BrianPhillipsRC Ya.! That would be cool. Maybe start that creek video with a segment on what it took to repair the plane after the crash.? Either way, please keep us posted on how easy it was to repair the damage.👍
So far, pretty easy...just fixed the arm that broke (motor pivot)...but still need a servo, or maybe I'll gut it and fix the servo, like I've done before. Not 100% sure. I've got another garbage bag waiting to be opened, and I'm always super reluctant to keep those garbage bags sitting too long, for fear my kids will throw it away - LOL :) JK.

I can spare you the wait...even though I was able to fix the broken linkage on the end of the one arm, the other arm's servo got stripped out :(..... Sorry to disappoint. Definitely not super strong, but you CAN actually get parts :)
I added the parts to the description. Spare Servo (or TWO) and a Plastic Parts kit would be wise, but it's just such a different and awesome experience!

I've been flying this bird since I needed more range and speed plus drone capability. I use it for my Sea Shepherd missions over the Lakes Region here in Laconia, New Hampshire... ☺
I've modified mine with fpv cameras for forward view and down below when needed. Plus have a prop Fowler which I never had to use here as the boaters seem well behaved compared to South Florida where I lived for 40yrs. Moved here 12yrs ago... I watch wildlife over the Lakes and if I need Law Enforcement I just call them while in flight... But like I said people here are more pleasant... 😃
I remember South Florida I flew Manatee rescue missions after boat(s) would run them over and cutting their flesh. I designed a prop Fowler of steel twine I flew then on my RC Sea Wolf helicopter over the Intracoastal Waterway and lakes... I have her on my channel in an air display before I moved here... ☺

watch out for the motor servos, they are plastic geared and can not take any crash that hits the props. I got a bad unit that flipped from a bad FC. I bought a new FC and hid a hover test everything seamed great until I went to winged flight. The servo got to it's striped gears and stopped working causing the craft to crash. Just spend the few extra bucks and get the craft that all these are copying from. The Mini Convergence.
Might not be a bad idea ;) HH has a way of making a good item...

I haven't done that one yet, but so many people reviewed it a few years back, but these XK aircraft are getting really good! I want them to break into the 1.2m scale already and get on with it!!!
Oh forgot to mention... Any altitude you choose the left stick in the halfway 50% top position will maintain auto height in your stabilization...
The servo that broke can be ordered online separately... They carry every part for this aircraft online! You might want to switch to metal servos if you crash it. It can withstand more punishment. Or just order the stock plastic ones and fly carefully.... ☺
I experimented with 3 and 4 bladed props with mine for more lifting power... Mine is modified for the things I do with it... But the stock prop gives the best aspect ratio in all modes...

Love this VTOL - it's AWESOME and VERY fun!!! I've been flying more carefully with it, and it's JJRC counterpart, and they're both GREAT! It's one of the FEW examples of being significantly BETTER than the Horizon Hobby offering (Mini Convergence VTOL)
Great video! I have to confess that i've had this drone/plane for 3 months and never flown it. The instructions are 100% in Chinese.
It was super-easy to setup, but totally true - maybe 10% English 90% Chinese...almost doesn't qualify for "Chenglish" on this manual.
For as much business as these Chinese companies do, you'd think they'd have at least one employee that is fluent in English. BUT, I can't speak Chinese, so I shouldn't bash them...I'm also not trying to market items to the Chinese speaking public....hummm
I just received mine too Brian. What I do is coat all my foamies with urethane. It won't hurt the TPO foam. Since I sell plastics for a living it's technically Thermoplastic Polyolefin. A material I sell but in pellet form. I've test hovered mine a week or so ago. Flies OK. Not quite as stable as a true quadcopter. I also mounted a 5.8 ghz camera on mine for FPV.
Have your tried the vertical hover mode?!?! I couldn't believe how well it did!

Brian, I forgot to mention it can make right turns using your left stick and move in the direction your turning your right stick... It HAS differential thrust, YES!!! ☺
Be gentle when doing this to avoid crashes. Always have some height also when you "TRANSITION!" Haha... LOL (I noticed your wife laughs at that.)

I have had mine for about two weeks, one of my favorite aircraft presently. Seeing this thing is so easy to fly, you should let your wife fly and you film, that would make for a fun video....
She might, but gets really nervous and crashes instantly - it's comical, but she CAN do it...she just clams up and hates when I put her on the spot - LOL :) I don't want to make her too mad, or we will lose out wonderful camera crew!!!

yep, it's be crappppppy, this and last and the previous week! I have a snow mound so big I can't see over it from the middle of the pile...that's two weeks worth of snow from just in front of the garage!
Very good video, it was like watching myself when I got mine I went from crashing a micro copter into the ceiling fan never flown before to one of these I have only ventured into 3D once that was hairy so knowing I was going to crash it in the 3D I bought a second well it was the JJRC M02 a Black friday deal 70% off a very good copy better in come ways copy with a better transmitter, so now when it stop's raining I can go out and learn to fly better so I can brave the 3D mode knowing I have another 90% the same so I can still have fun.
The key is to be soft with the transmitter no really fast inputs, trouble os I last used a stick transmitter was forty plus years ago, I run 5th scale gas offroad truck's and buggies mainly I have a couple of 6th & 7th scale electric trophy truck's of which you dont need to be so gentle with the input I have a 1/4th scale electric bike that I still haven't mastered after ten plus years of owning it, never flown before early december.
So loved your reaction the same as so many others on YT so much fun, why did I not learn to fly before, the answer it did not exist until not that long ago and it is to do with the new electronic's available now and someones idea ofmarrying a plane with a multirotor brilliant, wish it had been my idea, my doctor said I needed a stress buster and once I had mastered the basic's I was like you every time I go out it has me laughing, not sure if I even want to go further into drone was the idea until I saw this on YT so plane drone a drone to film me beating on my truck;s and buggies ?????????????
Flying is so different than many other RC disciplines, far less forgiving, but I feel that it's far more rewarding!!! I've done cars and truck, and all sorts of other cool RC contraptions, but planes are by far my favorite ;) This little VTOL suprized the heck out of me!!! It was absolutely amazing!
@@BrianPhillipsRC It is the crashing that take's the shine of a bit, as it is usually terminal for the plane, and as I have this and the JJRC version I have it covered, I need to get a drone to capture foorage of the fifth scale gas, but after flying the two versions they are very fast in both plane and multicopter I am leaning towards a plane but I need to gain confidence in the 3D mode, although not all planes are also.
These are made easier to fly for the newbie by the electronics they have so maybe a plane with the same electric's is where I need to go, but I am hooked.
Planes are most definitely not created equally. Some are fairly easy to fly, and others are VERY hard to fly... If you can fly a quad, you can fly a plane, but you need a runway and some room for a plane, whereas with a quad, you can go fly in a fairly tight space.
@@BrianPhillipsRC There are quite a few that do not need more than three foot to take off and land, others you launch by hand and if good carch it also, the question is which of them the XK and JJRC can have a camera mounted in the nose to point either down or forward at an angle, I could mount an fpv camera on the canopy as I beleive they can both be plugged into the controller, not certain as it is all new to me as I have 40+ years with gas and an occassional foray into nitro, but just recently I have got a 1/6th & 1/7th scale electric trophy truck's and that got me accepting electric as a form of power, but at a cost ruined a brand pair of maxamps 4S batteries, left them plugged into the truck for a week while away doh a very expensive one.
Ouch.....lipos are not very friendly when you over-discharge them... HOWEVER, you might be able to get them back! Did you know, you can charge the lipos on balance charger, and creep the charge up using another setting....BUT be super diligent, and very careful. You might even do it on a back patio (concrete) or something like this, just in case one would catch on fire...which they really shouldn't. You can charge one cell at a time too, if you want. You can also put two (or more) packs in parallel, to get the voltage up high enough to be "recognized" by the balance charger. There's lots of ways to get them "back", if they aren't already puffed, or broken in half....but seriously be careful. This is one of the only REAL risks in the hobby. You seem like you know enough about this stuff to keep out of the hospital :) Good luck, either way!

Eh been looking at several new WL Toys This one has my attention most do not know XK is wl tech like gmc is chevy or lincoln is ford..I got tons of wl toys not an issue with me. AWESOME I tripped across your channel I was looking at the XK A800...I got one on the way. And now I am looking at this X450/X420 might do it, well we both know I have to hahahahahahahahah
If you like this one, you MIGHT think about the JJRC one...somewhat better, and cheaper (Well sometimes the prices change back and forth...china can't every make up it's mind - LOL)

Hello I just got the X450 the manual is very confusing I'm able to fly it around my house " the cats hate me " when you showed how down and opposite sticks does that engage to Gyroz? I was able to start the motors by holding the "take off " button thanks love your videos!! ,,Scott in Denver. Oh what is the difference between mode 1 & 2 have not tried mode 1 yet or 6G mode yet
Thanks Scott! Mode 1 and Mode 2 are different control layouts on the sticks of the Transmitter.
Might want to google this, since you'll have a diagram them ;) I fly MODE 2 all the time, but Mode 1 is kinda the "other" popular mode, whereas some some use Mode 3 and even less popular Mode 4.
The OTHER modes you're talking about are 3D/6G (Stabilizer and Auto-Leveling) and the "other mode" - Off...I think (sorry). This speaks to the amount of flight aid that comes from the flight controller, BUT in a VTOL, there's always quite a bit of help. Even in "forward" flight mode (P.S. don't do that in the house - LOL) there's quite a bit of help.

It was definitely not a special effect ;) That was a CRAZY windy day!!! Those trees were whipping around like they wanted to break each other off. Our power was flickering while we were making breakfast! It was getting real a few minutes before we filmed.
Some day, I hope to make a really nice video where I actually edit it, and make it all shiny and awesome....but until then, I will make sure to really TEST your surround sound - LOL!!! You know I have big stereo's too, so I GET IT :)
Any idea what this aircraft does if it failsafes? For example if flying in airplane mode and loses signal? What does it do? Does it go to hover mode and land or just drop?
Sorry Chris, I haven't tested it, and hope I never have to!!!
What I can say for sure, I only KNOW the Mini Convergence will go into hover mode when the voltage gets low. Also, I can say for sure the "forward flight mode" out of 6G is a HUGE handful of crazy beans...I wouldn't recommend it, and be READY to flip to hover mode like ASAP when you make a slow turn, as you will almost certainly fall into an uncontrollable flat spin. I've had it happen with this, and the JJRC M02...but can't say I remember having this happen on the Mini Convergence.
Brian, do you fly all Of your planes in the winter? Wind and snow permitting.
Well, some I don't because they just get really dirty with wet ground, like my nice (big) airliners....but otherwise, I fly some during the winter. It's definitely weather dependent, but I push the envelope more than some.
Soon due to FAA, we'll have to fly by the "cover of night" ...maybe I should start making them all camo now :)

I agree - spar parts are a good idea for this aircraft, BUT I have a plethora of crashed stuff from which to pull gears and servos to get fixed up and flight worthy again ;)

Explain please how to change to mode 1 throttle right hand. I can switch the transmitter but it wont work properly
I'm sorry but have no idea how to do it...but I've heard some grumblings that it can be done on certain aircraft.
@@theoztreecrasher2647 untill this point ive bin..doin so. But then the motors will not start and one time they did start i couldnt stop them anymore and a had to take the battery out to stop them. In mode 2 you start the motors by holding the sticks down to the outside..how you start them in mode 1 ? And how to stop them in mode 1 ? Thanks in advance
The RCSaylors reviewed this same bird. Theirs was the JJRC M02, but I believe it is identical. They had the same result you did.
The RC Saylors review all the same things I do ;) BUT, they have a little more traction, since they've been around for a little while longer.
True, but I doubt they're copying me. We just have some of the same interests. Of course I want to crush them in CZcams stats, but I 'm glad they're having success! Good for them ;) They deserve their success, as they've worked hard for it too!!! The weird and cool thing about CZcams is that since anyone can do it, and there's so many different tastes that even if 10 people reviewed the same plane, we'd all have our own spin, and market to reach. If you REALLY want to know if something is good, you can bounce around from one channel to the next and get a great feel for the quality, looks, setup, and flight characteristics.
Only issue for the plethora of RC reviewers on CZcams is tat we all want you guys to buy from our respective links :) That way we can help fund our habits! LOL

Just got mine and the charger blinks when it's not connected but turns solid wheh I plug battery in. Any idea why? Could anyone recommend a good charger? Thank you
No biggie, they do change these things from time to time. Whatever the light is when you're NOT plugged in, is generally the condition that expresses that the pack is charged.
As for another charger, If you've just got the one VTOL, I'd stick with the one that came with, but I can share a few options below if you really want to charge faster...

Love the plane just wish it didn`t break so easy! I have seen many video`s on it and it always seems to break easily after small crashes! It has plastic servo`s that when tweeked at all by hitting ground or plants, ect., just breaks. Have to fly this one carefully, or it quickly becomes paper weight. Dude, Love your video`s though!
I agree - it's easy to brick this VTOL, BUT, I've already fixed mine once, and just used spare parts from other planes in the "junk yard" - LOL - This thing is a blast to fly!
Most RC stuff is made to sell batteries while the X450 is made to sell servos. I love XK but there's a problem with airplane mode on the X450. I want somebody to shrink it down, delete airplane mode and the ailerons. Bury the tilt arms in foam to keep them from stripping the servos in crashes. Tricopter mode is surprisingly efficient and it looks great in the air.
I agree about the Servo Sales Model XK is running on this particular aircraft.
TWO Gripes....
1) doesn't seem to stop running when you crash....and no way to "kill" it - I hate this feature...
2) As a direct result of 1 - I broke mine...BUT it's easily and cheaply fixable.
Even with these failings, if I hadn't been flying at near 0 degrees (F) the aircraft would be totally fine ;) My fault, plus I was running the transition between modes toooooo low, and that too was my fault.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Disarm motors is "Stick Mode" at the bottom left and "Camera" on the bottom right, held down simultaneously. Yeah... Anyway the face of XK is a guy named Lou Ming and he has a CZcams channel where he explains this stuff. He's on RCGroups as well and seems open to feedback.

@@BrianPhillipsRC I want to see what you can do with the X520. I think it's everything great in RC airplanes rolled into one. JJRC's VTOL looks a little better in the styling but it doesn't seem to be functionally different from the X450.

Yes, I used to work with my late Grandpa on them too. He'd stick build them, and we'd get together and work out what electronics were needed, then we'd order everything and then we'd meet up periodically, and setup the plane...the culmination was always flying it together. He and I really enjoyed these last few years sharing this experience.
Also, when I was a kid, I built a few models, but never RC'ed them. They were just gliders.My dad had a sig cadet (maybe) with a gas motor and futaba radio. We went out to fly it, and crashed into a corn field...total loss :( Oh well, that was the way it went for most.

Yeah, I have a few that I fly. In fact, I flew the 1600mm Sunbird just this afternoon! I want to build another one, only really get it "just so" with proper control surfaces built in. I've kinda hobbled it together from what my Grandpa had originally built....but it's a great flying plane with huge split flaps, and crow setting too. You can fly nose down (straight down) and slow down!!! It's like deploying a parachute! I love flying that plane!

YES, and it's flying again. This thing is really cool! I flew it for my daughters birthday party the other day (4 additional people - so still "legal" for the moment.) I took off from the living room, flew around the room, then flew through the front door and then came in when I was done (flying) and landed on the kitchen island! What a cool party trick!!!

I think you can in airplane mode, but now that you ask, I'm not 100% sure you can take it out of auto leveling mode in "Plane" mode - GREAT question, and I may have to try it out.

I have, and almost any BNF from Horizon Hobby is a good purchase, BUT I'm not buying it.

Brian Phillips any feed back or two cents is welcomed and Appreciated because it’s either going to be the P 51 from horizon or the airliner from motionRC. Also just ordered the F-22 Raptor 90mm edf from motion it will be my first 90 making a big jump from 70 to 90 tho.

With only one year flying experience, you're going right for the "big guns" !!! I bet you'll LOVE the F-22, as it will fly good. The F22 's ALWAYS seem to fly really good!
As for my 2 cents on the 1500mm P-51.... it's just another P-51 with overpriced electronics. It's not a bad plane, and it's not a gimmick, but the SMART technology is way overkill, and unnecessary for most users.
I LOVE the AL37, and want one badly, but not sure if that's your bag of tricks? I'm kinda dying for one, but will just have to keep dying for one...since we have a bunch of other expensive things we NEED right now ;( sometimes it sucks to be an adult - LOL!

And yea right to the big guns I have a Secret I use the lemon rx with stab plus it’s nice but I don’t fly how there meant to fly I get them in the air and just circle and figure 8s I don’t do stalls knife edging any of that I will though I plan on being in it 100% this summer just sucks cause there’s no clubs or airfields I take off from a back road with a big field. And I just got the F-22 it’s huge but keeping it in the box until spring. But on another note the airliner I think is to big to fly were I do so might be put on the back burner for now and with all the new laws being passed this year for unmanned aircrafts are going to suck. And I do agree with you about the p-51 it is expensive so I’m going to wait on that one also and anyways thanks for your input and taking the time to reply fly well- Seth

That plane looks almost identical to the Convergence.
Most of the VTOLs look pretty similar, but yes, this one is no exception. I hear theres a knockoff of this tri-chopter too.
Itsept for the wing tips folding down on the convergence & mini convergence the JJRC M02 is closer the XK also has a smattering of convergence in it, but it is the electric's that make them so different it can't do the nose up flight and it is not so forgiving for a rookie, I tried the mini convergence indoor's and could not get my head round it, but I was flying the XK straight out the box and by the time I got the JJRC I was flying the plane mode and even a little foray into 3D without a major crash. I have no doubt they are copie's but bwtter for a novice also enough difference's to get away with looking similar.
Yep - surprising how well XK has their stabilizer and auto leveling systems dialed in!!!

@@77bubba00 I belong to an RC club. Was flying my X450 indoors in a gym and had the whole club as an audience. Another member had his mini Convergence. Guess what. My X450 flew circles around the Convergence. By far a better more fun flyer.

I think Horizon Hobby does a lot right, but lately, I feel like they're pricing themselves out of a HUGE RC market.
1) They out to be our lobbying HARD against FAA Remote ID
2) They ought to be designing a chip for when FAA Remote ID becomes the "Law of the land" despite the FAA not having any constitutional authority to make any LAW...
3) They need to reduce their prices, or at least offer the 10% off coupon codes they used to do
4) They need to send me items for review

This is by far the coolest flying thing ever. However, every review I’ve seen has ended the same way. So for now it sits in my cart not ready for purchase. I’d be able to fly this all day in multi-rotor/quad mode no problem. But one flip of the switch to airplane mode would be the end of this plane for me. D’Oh!
Well, I'd be lying if I didn't admit it's a bit delicate. My only real issue is that you can't stop it freaking out when something goes wrong...that's what broke mine...not the actual crash.
However, it's SO much fun - borrow it from a friend, you gotta try it! I've flown tons of quads and multiroters, and this is way more cool!
Brian Phillips I plan to buy one in the summer. In the meantime I want to see you and others attempt to fix it so I know what parts to buy as well. Be nice if XK offered them BNF.
I'm sorta tempted to try to put some metal gear servos into the main booms....I think the tailevons would be fine with plastic gears. Just not sure I want to fuss with it.
