Why?? The DC-4 and commercial aviation in SA in general has an outstanding safety record, in fact the DC-4's operated since after WW2 without a single civilian loss - there is no vehicle in the world that is as professionally, regularly and meticulously maintained and operated by as many highly experienced veterans of the industry in flight and engineering than this classic bird because it is such a classic treasure, the lucky occupants were more likely to be killed by a falling shark.

We used to have a restored Junker that was also flying over Johannesburg many years ago but thats no more. On the issue of airlines and aviation history in South Africa, follow whats happening to South African Airlines - SAA. Its state owned but is now bankrupt due to corruption and bad management after the black majority government took over in 1994. Billions of bail-out required. You might want to catch the last flight before they close down??

This is by far the worst looking machine you've boarded and it just happens to belong to Southern Africa's most decorated airline.

There ARE world class aircrafts in South Africa that you could have reviewed.
