That's cool. Way more DC-3s flying today than there are DC-4s.
True
These are super rare planes in the airline industry these days! Awesome catch!
So nice to see this rare aircraft under the care of a museum, and offering joy rides from time-to-time. Thanks for sharing.
For those of you who are too lazy to read the description, this was a historic flight! So stop saying that air koryo is better than this.
Definitely adding this to my travel checklist. What a gorgeous aircraft--so well restored! I'd have 100 percent confidence in the safety of the flight.
That's so cool that these planes are still flying. What a great tribute to the "old timers"!
I really love your videos, especially because you're flying so many rare aircraft. Thanks for sharing! :) Enjoyed watching!
Fantastic video.Thanks!
Very nice video ! I flew on this aircraft in 1999 on a one hour flight over Johannesburg from Swartkops air force base
what a beautiful piece of American craftsmanship precision to the core nice video
J'adore le bruit des moteurs!
The sound of the engines !
That my friend is an Airplane.
Pure, and simple ,it flew because it was designed to,not pushed into the air.
Thanks for sharing.
My first flight was on a SWISSAIR DC-4 from Cairo to Geneva via Athens.
Love the polished fuselage and rows of rivets.
*mind blown* It would be seriously difficult to top that experience. The ultimate of cool!! What a treat to watch!! ☺️
My first trip by plane was made in one of this vintage aircrafts. It was a great experience, one can really to feel the power and vibration of the engines while flying. Thanks for sharing the video.
gorgeous aircraft
Like a documentary film.So special.
My Dad worked on these when he worked for United Airlines....I was 5 years old when we went from New York to LAX on one lol.. I think we stopped at midway Chicago..
The sound of engine is so satisfied
Now this is proper flying none of your new fangled modern jets.
I had the extremely good fortune to fly on ZS-AUB twice, both times with the Boss, Flippie Vermeulen
I'd love to get a chance to fly in this aircraft just once .
An old Douglas. Nice.
Wow the sound of them 18 cylender rotary engines driving them props wow that gave me goosebumps lol.
Now those are old school aircrafts
added to travel checklist .
The plane is retro
What do you mean? Old planes ARE RETRO.
Anyone notice the captain seems to be steering down the runway not with the rudder pedals but by the tiller on his left hand. I’m guessing the rudder was not hydraulic but gear and pulleys and only used during flight?
I won the national competition to "re-clothe" their ubiquitous and famous DC-3 in a stunning yet period appropriate new livery which I am dying to see applied. What's up Skyclass when is she getting her new colors?
Wow its like stepping back in time. How do u get this kinda flights?
Its an old lady but she doing the job love the DC3 and DC 4
Wow, that DC-4 is only one of two still flying with passengers.
No, no DC-4s fly for commercial purposes anymore, this is a one-off flight.
Is that an Air India DC 3 at the very start of the video on the right?
Brave passengers i must say!
No not really; jus6 educated about great planes.
no idea about the SA historic fleet. I would pay a lot to experience another ride in one of them.
Why?? The DC-4 and commercial aviation in SA in general has an outstanding safety record, in fact the DC-4's operated since after WW2 without a single civilian loss - there is no vehicle in the world that is as professionally, regularly and meticulously maintained and operated by as many highly experienced veterans of the industry in flight and engineering than this classic bird because it is such a classic treasure, the lucky occupants were more likely to be killed by a falling shark.
no way. They were well taken care of by Captain Vermeulen and his crews
you're braver than i thought
So the throttles are duplicated? Each pilot has four?
bruhh this dude so luckyyy
9:27 I thought the pilot said to remain seated
He did
How did you get a flight on the DC 4
back then they operated charter flights out of Rand Airports, so you had to be there at the right moment and get a ticket.
1954?
Older. They flew after WWII.
thanks for the video....while landing i never saw flaps, did the propeller brought plane to get stop by rotating opposite direction? once again thanks
there are flaps you just can't see them in the video. Piston engines don't have reverse thrust just brakes.
@@dominicnotley5076 the flaps come down from the underside of the trailing edge of the wings, but they do not extend backwards like they did on a Connie.
"THERE'S A MAN ON THE WING !"....
Am I right in thinking that adjacent props are turning in opposite directions to help balance gyroscopic moments ?
meandmymouth I think it's an optic illusion. They do turn in same direction..
I actually did my apprenticeship on these, yes the props turn the same direction
This would be so much fun to fly on a world war 2 plane
Nunca que eu embarcaria num avião desses kkkkk
huh i thought they retired those airplanes
thats unfair, i live in south africa and havent flown on this before. its just modern planes for me. have been to rand airport though to visit a retired 747, but quite a while back
#2 did not sound very happy taxiing...
Those R2000,s never started like that when Nieves and Barbosa worked on them!!!! Lol!!
A plane without PA
wow seems so old fashioned ... boeing still have this part for the old dc-4?
Well, Boeing didn't build this airplane. It was built by the Douglas Aircraft Company. DC stands for Douglas Commercial. It's a plane that was mainly used in the 1940s and 1950s.
Scariest plane i ever flew in....
A Nice Sound Of Turboprops Engines... 👍👍👍💟💟💟👮👮👮
DC4 uses piston engines
Dominic Notley ... You Right ... Piston Engines 👍👍👍 I'm Wrong ... 😆😆😆 Over All That Aircraft Very Good Conditions For Flight On Duty ... 👌👍👌👍👌👍
turboprop my ass
Pratt and Whitney r2000 18 cylinder radial with twin Magneto's if I recall
piston engines, not turbines.
Are they still operate flight services with DC-4 nowadays?
BaldyRazorGuy read the description. It's an historic flight.
They even have the older South African flag lol
i have design a jet plane in the aviation industry @sharkfacenzama I'm also in the pilot list at kwasizabantu
But this can't be SAA, probably apartheid era plane. SAA has modern planes and South Africa is more developed than you would ever think.
nostaliga airline, this one. Not for regular scheduled flights.
gg
Pessengers with strong balls ....:) :)
I had no problems with this when I went along. One flight was circling the Matterhorn.
Hella shady
First
Forst
and i thought north koreas airplane where bad
totally I agree
Its an historic flight...using aircraft from South African Airways' classic fleet
totally Air Koryo has more than one type of aeroplane...
IKR
really....... it would have taken you less than 2 minutes to educate yourself about what you're actually looking at...... do that in future to stop yourself from looking like an ass....
They could have take a train though
Where's the fun in that?
This is way faster.
who would fly in THAT
are you just thick or born stupid??
jaycee bettelsheim Well he is going under the name "Killer" Keemstar so... is it any surprise?
It's a very historical airplane, probably even built before World War II
HAHA, I have done it, and the problem was, after the engines shut down at the end, I felt like I had a lump in my throat, that it was already over. If you like propliners, you pay good money to get a chance.
We used to have a restored Junker that was also flying over Johannesburg many years ago but thats no more. On the issue of airlines and aviation history in South Africa, follow whats happening to South African Airlines - SAA. Its state owned but is now bankrupt due to corruption and bad management after the black majority government took over in 1994. Billions of bail-out required. You might want to catch the last flight before they close down??
And they say Air Koryo is the only 1 star airline in the world. Just like i thought american propaganda
Leslie Chow This was an historic flight!
You must be from some other planet. Best remain there.
Dumbshit, this is a one off flight. It was done for the sake of doing it, not to transport anyone.
This isn’t an airline. It’s done under special arrangements. Go check South African Airways, Kulula Airway, Mango Airways, FlySafAir, SA Airlink and South African Express if you want to see our Airlines😁
That's flying junk...
Is there no better aircraft that you could have reviewed from the same airline?
This is by far the worst looking machine you've boarded and it just happens to belong to Southern Africa's most decorated airline.
I feel as though this was deliberate.
There ARE world class aircrafts in South Africa that you could have reviewed.
wrong. It is with a nostalgic flight operation, painted in the old SAA colours. BTW the interior of the ZS-AUB is spotless.
I thought that Fokker 70 is scary? What on earth is this trash?!!!
Old is gold
