  • A short rant, truth, sharpening and review of the legendary Higonokami knife made by Mitsuo Higonokami, the 5th generation founder's family son, who trademarked the Higonokami from Sado Kanekoma registered company in Japan: www.higonokami.jp/en/
I bought my Higonokami from Thomas Tools and you can get it here with 5% discount using my coupon code SHERMANCHIN or the Thomas Tools link:

Nagao Kanekoma is the only company allowed to use the trademark Higonokami name. Every other Japanese knife is named a variation of the Higonokami as long as you don't see the trademark of Sado Kanekoma on the knife sheath.
Here is the video of me using my Higonokami while planting a Japanese Maple tree in my tropical garden:

Showing how Mt Fuji is designed into the knife is very cool. Are you close enough to the factory to video a factory tour where this knife is made? there is a very short video but it begins with putting the flipper tang on the blade, not how the dual steels are forged together.

Thanks! Unfortunately, I am not close enough to the factory but there is a video of it by Thomas Tools: czcams.com/video/t-D4JLVe1QQ/video.html

To loosen the mechnism, you can either reshape the handle or apply a light oil at the rivet.

I oiled it like crazy and it doesn't really help much 😅 Haven't tried reshaping the handle though.

hi, could you please explain how you think about the blade is sandwiched? did you say carbon steel at outside and chrome steel in the moddle? sounds weird

I will quote directly from Thomas Tool's website: "The ‘Sandwich’ structure encloses hard steel with soft iron." Chromium steel is harder than carbon steel. thomastools.com.my/products/higonokami-number-4-stainless-steel-sk5

Thanks, Andrew! ☺️ How did you come about this video? The Higonokami is quite famous even among American knife collectors but unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation going about CZcams. Do you collect other blades? I got a Oknife Freeze 3 and a Kizer Critical Mini: czcams.com/video/iB80hC3kEAw/video.html

@@andrewhondo Thanks so much for the sub, bud! ☺️🙏 I don't do fishing but the Swiss Army Knife has the perfect stainless steel blades for the environment and I could probably do a video on my SAKs soon. M390 blade steels are also pretty high into corrosion resistanc and might be suitable for you. 🔪🗡️⚔️

@@andrewhondoIf you still want a Higonokami, my advice is get one of the versions with the blade made from "Blue paper steel". In the UK, the blue steel Higonokami's are approx twice the price of the basic SK-5 steel blade. You definitely won't regret it. The cheaper SK-5 carbon steel is as sharp as a razor and it will effortlessly dry shave hairs. But the Higo' blades made from the Blue paper steel are from an entirely different planet. The blades are stamped with a Japanese inscription that says Aogami Warikomi. Aogami means Blue paper. Warikomi means three layers. It's basically a blade thats made from a 'steel sandwich'. A hard high carbon steel inner core with a layer of softer outer steel on each side. Blue steel Higonokami's are sharper than a light sabre. When Obi-Wan Kenobi flashed his light sabre and chopped the trouble makers arm off in the bar scene from Star Wars, it was all over in the blink of an eye. A very impressive weapon for sure. But he would've got the job done even quicker if he had used a blue paper steel Higonokami. The blue steel blades are also a thing of beauty to look at. You can see the line between the two different types of steel as they become one . The colour contrast between the two different steels as they melt together is absolutely stunning.
Disclaimer: I'm not sponsored by, or affiliated to Higonokami in any way whatsoever. I'm just being totally honest cos I don't want you to miss out on an experience that you'll remember for the rest of your life.
      👌👍🙌
