    R380 = rated for 380Nm input (280 pound feet force)
    LT77 = British Leyland 77mm shaft spacing (distance between lay shaft and main shaft)
    Type A gearbox prefixes: - 50A; 51A; 56A; 58A; 60A; 61A; 66A; 68A; 70A; 74A (Long Stick - Defender R380)
    Type B gearbox prefixes: - 53A; 55A; 63A; 67A; 69A; 73A (short Stick - Discovery R380)
    Type C gearbox prefix: - 18A
    Type D gearbox prefixes: - 64A; 65A
    The letter at the end of the serial number is the series type. Most R380s are J series but there are some K and L out there.
    Advice: once you can read your gear box serial number WRITE IT DOWN and save it.

    hi and thanks for the video again!! In your opinion is it possible to change to Prime Motion shaft bearing during an engine out clutch change (as have some noise in neutral with clutch not engaged) without removing the R380??? Thanks if you get tiume to reply

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  Před 5 lety

      I had to think about this! Technically maybe, practically no. I have difficulty getting the bearing off the shaft in the vice, so in the box would require some advanced skill
      Also when fitting new bearings the box would need reshimming
      It is common for the R380 to chatter - it seems to be the clutch plate springs that are the culprit

    I found that the syncro body up and the sellector ring of the 5th/reverse with the with five notches is facing the reverse syncro and gear wheel, i've tried to find free movement setting when the five notches facing the 5th gear wheel and it didn't match.
    It works good only when the notches towards the reverse.

    Another great video as always Mike. Can I pick your brains for a moment? I heard a grinding/loose metal sound yesterday coming from the clutch/gearbox area. I've been poking round today and it seems to only happens when under load, so I'm thinking of ruling out the clutch.
    Although it drives fine, I'm understandably concerned. After watching your video I'm pretty sure I don't fancy trying to rebuild a gearbox.
    Any suggestions to check before I take it to the local mechanics (who I don't have any faith in sadly) and consider buying a refurbished box.
