- This week, Michelle (Run Red Run) and I return from the future in our spacecraft and the first thing we do is make Ben Cooper-style masks of the Apes that run this planet in 3978. We barely escaped with our lives and art supplies. We also made some retro-style product boxes to keep them in. We talk a lot about our process and, if you can believe it, apes.
Tools and Materials:
Blank mask
Aluminum Foil
Papier Mache (flour/water/newsprint)
Fast Mache
Hot Glue
Foam-Mo foam clay
Dremel (rotary tool with sanding drum)
Plasti-Dip (to seal the foam clay)
Acrylic Craft Paints
Boxes made with chipboard, 12-point semi gloss paper, acetate sheets, acid-free glue

Bravo Michelle and Vince for these 2 awesome masks . Like the hair aspect and the vintage boxes !
Thank you, Robert! We really like them too. We sit around wearing them half the day watching Netflix. : )
Those masks turned out great, but man I love those boxes you two put together! 🤩🤩🤩
We were really happy with the boxes too. I'm hoping to make it a regular thing if we make more masks. Thanks, Joshua!
Dude these are amazing!!!! I am binge watching your mask projects!! So glad I found you guys!
OH great! Glad you're enjoying those. We haven't done a mask in a while. We really should try to do some soon. Thanks!
@LongLostFriendStudio please do!!! I have watched a lot of videos like Stiltbeast studios and Mr Chicken but can't believe I've never came across you guys. Love your stuff!
I've watched your video a few times on your planet of the apes Ben cooper masks I must say they are very intriguing and your voice impersonations tie well in the ape characters I'm truly impressed I would have wanted my mum to buy them for had id seen them in the shops and you're funny into the bargain
HAhahaha! At first, I didn't remember doing any voices. Then I rewatched the video and instantly realized we did that ridiculous action figure movie! So glad you enjoyed the video, the masks, and our ridiculous sketch! Thank you!
Your house must be the funnest house ever in the world.
🙂It really is a lot of fun here. ❤
John Chambers got the Oscar for the Apes makeup for the 1968 movie
Well-deserved! For me, that make up STILL holds up. Classic.
Love the project! Any chance of getting a template for the box I can add my own design to?
Thanks, Jason. No templates, sorry. I just hacked my way, trial and error, through a basic box design, measured to the dimensions of the mask. The top’s the same as the bottom, except for the hole I cut for the plastic window. Keep this in mind if you try it: I screwed it up the first time and didn’t leave enough wiggle room for the lid to overlap the bottom. So up your measurements a little to account for that. Also, don’t know if you ever looked at pacdora.com, but they have customizable box templates (and a whole category for boxes with lids) that you can design online, then download the pdf. I haven’t used it, but it looks super helpful if you need to design any kind of box. Good luck!
"We don't have a Vacuform machine!" Well. that sounds like a Problem you need to fix, huh?
You make a very logical point. 🙂
Not exactly Ben Cooper style if you made them in your style, that happens to be better look wise. I myself simply repainted actual Ben Cooper Apes masks for a reasonable screen accurate look. I'm trying to find a way to make the disturbingly inaccurate costumes look accurate while still maintaining that Ben Cooper style.
Yeah, "Ben Cooper Style" as in "half-mask with molded hair and an elastic string that's sure to break eventually" but yeah, I hear you. Your project sounds like fun too. I think the Ben Cooper paint style (hard-edged cell-shading for highlights and shadows) is pretty dominant and might be hard to work into "screen accurate" but I wish you luck! We just swung by your channel and saw some of the stuff you're working on. FANTASTIC! Looking forward to lots of fun stuff from you. SUBSCRIBED!
@@LongLostFriendStudio Thanks for subbing. When I say accurate as far as Ben Cooper I basically mean the colors and design. Example: My gorilla soldier would have purple leggings with blue vinyl boot tops attached and purple sleeves with blue cuffs attached. And of course the vest would be blue with darker blue thin horizontal lines to represent the piping.. It's okay if it has the cartoony look
