I feel so bad for Bonnie. She did the best she could with lackluster lines and scenes they gave her character. She was such an incredible character in the books and I so wish she could have brought that to the 8 movies. Thanks for bringing this to light in this video Dean! It helps paint Bonnie in the light she deserves to be in

In Alan Rickman’s diary entries that were published into a book, he mentioned his struggles with trying to get a line changed for Snape. It sounded like the scripts were locked in and he had to fight to change something. If an A-list and older actor had crazy pushback when he tried to advocate for his character, I imagine there was little hope for a young Bonnie being able to make changes. I hope we get some better Ginny writing in the reboot… fingers crossed 🤞🏼

I know some stuff has to be left out, but for the character who ended up being Harry's wife....you'd think they would have tried to do more with her in the movies.

  • @grahamdamberger7130
    @grahamdamberger7130 Před 10 měsíci +10

As I said once before, practically all the Weasley kids were done dirty in the films. Bill only appeared in Deathly Hallows, Charlie was cut out of the films entirely, Percy never appeared after Order of the Phoenix, Fred's death and George's reaction happened off-screen, Ron had his best moments given to Hermione (not all, but most), and Ginny's character was ruined. They didn't show Harry getting jealous when Dean was mentioned but they showed Ginny getting jealous when Cho was mentioned. I feel like the screenwriters of the films were haters of the Weasleys. Or wanted other characters to shine brighter because of personal biases.
When I look at Ginny in the Order of the Phoenix film, Bonnie's portrayal in certain scenes gave me vibes of a girl that younger girls not only look up to as a role model, but also one that some of them develop a crush for. And who knows, there were probably some third-year girls in OOTP (both the book and the film) who may have asked her out or admitted their crush for her, to which she probably responded with something along the lines of "I appreciate your feelings, but I am currently seeing someone" or "I'm sorry, but I can't reciprocate your feelings". Maybe something the new TV series can look into as a stand-alone episode or a side plot in an episode.

3:42 This confirms my suspicions, there was sabotage for Ginny and Bonnie. Steve Kloves sabotaging Ginny by playing favorites with Hermione, and the executives also wanting to prop up Hermione because they saw that Emma Watson got her glow up and grew stunningly beautiful and Bonnie not much, so if it wasn't for the fact the Harry and Ginny relationship became canon in the book, Ginny was going to be thrown completely on the wayside.

    • @Joreel

I think she did an amazing job with what she had to work with. Many of the characters were destroyed in the movies. They tried to take massive works and force them into two hour movies. It is similar to trying to take all of The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings and make a 30 minute cartoon. They assumed everyone watching the movies just KNEW the books. I’m not a Potterphile but I read the series every year between Halloween and Christmas… the movies are rich in atmosphere but the books just can’t be beat.
As an actor, I loved seeing how Ginny went from little girl to calm, centered, young adult Ginny and did so with such economy of movement. Ms Wright accomplished with scraps what lesser artists would have given up on and just played for the check. At least they gave her some full face moments in which she told whole stories in the single flick of her eyes.
I say Brava Ms Wright for making more of Ginny than you were given to work with.

I discovered Rowling and the Potter books late in life (I’m 70 this month). For fun and giggles… and feeling young again, I went and waited at the local Barnes and Noble’s doors for the final release and stood talking to the moms and dads waiting in a sea of 8 to 15 year olds. I look like a dowdy professor from Hogwarts and a particularly sassy mom with 3 little ones in tow introduced me to her friends saying, “He’s cool! He’s just a big Potterphile like the rest of us.”
The laughter broke tensions built after hours waiting in the dark in a sea of impatient, giddy children.
I’m amused by the remark and what it means about an elderly person loving a children’s book series. I still think it’s funny…because it’s a bit naughty and edgy…and literate.

Bonnie would have been so great if she was given the opportunity to play the real Ginny.
Personally, I still feel robbed of one of the best scenes in the entire series:
"Harry looked around; there was Ginny running toward him; she had a hard, blazing look in her face as she threw her arms around him. And without thinking, without planning it, without worrying about the fact that fifty people were watching, Harry kissed her.
"After several long moments - or it might have been half an hour - or possibly several sunlit days - they broke apart. The room had gone very quiet. Then several people wolf-whistled and there was an outbreak of nervous giggling. Harry looked over the top of Ginny's head to see Dean Thomas holding a shattered glass in his hand, and Romilda Vane looking as though she might throw something.
Hermione was beaming, but Harry's eyes sought Ron. At last he found him, still clutching the Cup and wearing an expression appropriate to having been clubbed over the head. For a fraction of a second they looked at each other, then Ron gave a tiny jerk of the head that Harry understood to mean, Well-if you must."
And the fact that Ginny later in the book (during Dumbledore’s funeral) confessed that she never gave up on him:
" I never really gave up on you," she said. "Not really. I always hoped....
Hermione told me to get on with life, maybe go out with some other people, relax a bit around you, because I never used to be able to talk if you were in the room, remember? And she thought you might take a bit more notice if I was a bit more - myself."
"Smart girl, that Hermione," said Harry, trying to smile. "I just wish I'd asked you sooner. We could've had ages...months...years maybe...
"But you've been too busy saving the wizarding world," said Ginny, half laughing.
"Well...I can't say I'm surprised. I knew this would happen in the end. I knew you wouldn't be happy unless you were hunting Voldemort. Maybe that's why I like you so much."
Such great moments! Can’t wait to get to these parts when I reread the books!

  • @nicoleevansfit2007

Bonnie gave a solid performance but the executives failed Ginny as a character. There was literally no solid indication that Harry and Ginny had any romance/chemistry in the movies until Hermione said to Harry in HBP “I see the way you look at her. I know- you’re my best friend.” And that line (which should be like a “FINALLY!” moment) just feels straight out of left field. IMO I think the executives focused way too hard on Harry’s romance with Cho in the OOTP (which they never really closed that chapter in the movies too) and I think that lack of stance with Cho and Harry is also why Ginny seemed a bit out of left field. And as much as I love the Potter movies, hopefully the executives can focus on character development and relationships over just plot line this time around with the TV series because that’s what really made the HP series magic.

Same. I remember movie watchers being confused and not understand why Hermione and Harry didn't end up together because they shared so much screen time and the actors seem to have good chemistry. Poor Ginny was never around much to interact with. I also remember an interview Rolling had with the main screen writer who was obsessed with Hermione. By the way things sounded others had much more control on the script then Rolling did. That and there is always studio interference just in varying degrees. I remember seeing an interview a few years back of Bonnie with the Phelps twins I think and I thought she seemed a better Ginny just being herself than the movie portrayed.

As for the chemistry with Daniel, I would say they have the same chemistry as their book counterparts which is non existant

I'm sure there's things that we miss about Jenny Weasley I think it's because they were struggling behind the scene and there was too much frustration how to portray Jenny's character in the big screen it's true that Jenny Weasley deserves more than being a love interest because she was just a love interest in the entire movie so I'm sure we could know more about her character not only to be a love interest for Harry Potter or love interest for Dean Thomas we all need to know more about what makes Jenny Weasley particular as a witch and also what makes her a person and we need to know more about her personality about herself

2 hrs isn’t enough to develop especially supporting characters and provide an in-depth story line dedicated to them. I just hope that the Harry Potter series does a better job in the character development of actors in supporting roles.

"I wouldn't be surprised if half of the execs hadn't even read the books themselves."
How could such a thing even be allowed? As a writer of moderate (and ever growing) success, if anyone wants to adapt my books into movies in the future, I will have a clause in the contract that no one unfamiliar with my work may have any influence over the production. I highly recommend any and all authors to do the same. We've all had enough of bad adaptations on screen.
Now, if they want to change things because of pacing, time constraint, limited effects or simply because they do what they think is best for a visual medium, that's fine. That's why it's called an adaptation and not a direct visual representation. But I DEMAND that they at least read the books before making any such changes.

Book Ginny was perfect for Harry. She understood him but didn't put with any crap from him either. Like the scene in OotP where she gave him grief for not talking to her about pissibly being possessed by Voldemort.

Is understandable that Bonnie complains about this. Book Ginnie is a strong, self empowered girl who came back from being an insecure little girl to be a quidditch badass queen, confidence attractive young girl and Griffindor level of braverry.
But movie Ginnie was simply diminished so Hermione was the only girl boss in the school. Because nobody could be as powerful as Hermione in the screenwriter's judgement.
Ginnie actually wasn't given any character arc in the movies. She stood being the shy, insecure girl she was in the beginning. Her character growth wasn't depicted faithfully, and it is Kloves' and Goldenberg 's fault.
And yes, jkr stood there and watch Ginnie being ruined, so she's at fault too.
Let's hope she allows Ginnie to be book accurate this time for the series.

I feel so bad for Bonnie. I mean they made movie Ginny crappy. Bonnie is such a great actor. But what they did to her is just bad. The book Ginny was amazing. Her scenes with Harry are just bad. I mean they might have been my favorite couple seeing as I saw Harry with Hermione better but their parts in the movie were really bad. I mean anyone who never read the books could never understand how they could be together. There was no chemistry. They gave her a bad script. The people who did this either didn't read the books or didn't care. Ginny was a wonderful character in the book. She was amazing. She was popular. She was a firecracker. You don't see that in the movies and not because of Bonnie. It was the exects who were shitty. Those giving her crap about the crappy way they told her to act, you are worse than crap. Bonnie is wonderful. She is an excellent actor and a sweetheart. I hope she sees that she herself is not hated but the amount they gave her in the script was. It is the people who did the script writing that deserves to get all the bull not Bonnie

I understood that JK Rowling herself she was not happy how the characters were portrayed in the movies in the Harry Potter movies it absolutely makes why she didn't say anything about the Jenny character when Bonnie was playing Jenny I could say she is probably the Harry Potter love interest or the Dean Thomas love interest JK Rowling's she couldn't do anything about it she doesn't even know how to write a storyline for a movie she's an author she writes novels she does not write movies so look what happened to Fantastic Beasts it failed because people did not like it when she writes movies because she's not in a movie director she is a poet so she writes novels so JK Rowling's she couldn't do anything about it but I'm sure she understands Bonnie her struggle playing Jenny
This is why she killed Snape out of the movie and Dobby and professor I think the characters did not correspond in her in her interest when it's about her novels how they are represented I believe the writers and the directors the producers they were doing it in a different way so this is why this is why Jenny character fail but Bonnie she had no control all over it that was the directors and the writers and the producers

I'm not a fan of Ginny and Harry together but outside of that I don't like how she was used in the movies. After book 2 she was bland and uninteresting. In the third you could have taken her out and nothing would have been lost because her presence was so small to the point where she was an extra. She had 1 line of dialogue as far as I cant remember.

The tying the shoe lace scene. That is very "BDSM service submissive" like. I think someone involved in that writing/direction, did it.on purpose like a prank. There has been zero mention if this view, only that the scene is bad. But why? Why was it there? What does it do? Its not in the books. How was it sold to the powers that be? And how was it conveyed to get it done that way. Prank by a BDSM Dom or sub, but prank nonetheless.

I don't think Bonnie was the right actress for teenage/adult Ginny. She was a cute little kid but its like she forgot how to act when she hit puberty. Kinda wish they would have recast her after the first 2 movies. I mean, they recast Dumbledore and made Goyle a black kid, but they kept the same girl as Ginny? Why?! Sorry, but Bonnie didn't grow into the spunky, sporty, beautiful teenage Ginny from the books. She grew into a self conscious, gangly , awkward tall girl, who wasn't pretty the way book Ginny was. Sorry if that's mean. I know she is Brittish so its not really her fault. But on screen, her character comes off as shy, stiff, and confused half the time...whispering all of her lines. No ounce of physical chemistry or attraction between her and Daniel. (Obviously, Daniel was way too short for her and kind of weird looking too, so again, not all Bonnie's fault)
I know some of it was bad writing and direction, but some of it was *ahem* her acting. Sorry. There's probably a reason the writers cut out her story lines. The actress couldn't pull them off, and she wasn't likable as a character in the movie. Ginny was supposed to be beautiful, popular, easy going and cool. Someone the audience liked and rooted for Harry to get with. Movie Ginny was SUCH a disappointment :( Every time they had awkward "romantic scenes" together it was hard to watch. Almost like the acters had never met each other and then were forced to do scenes together without being introduced first.
Plus, she was so much TALLER than Harry and that just irked me. Made them look unnatural as a couple and highlighted how short Daniel was. Okay so I KNOW it wasn't Daniel's fault he ended up being 5'5", but like, isn't there some percentile chart they could have used on the10 year old kids to get an idea of how tall they are gonna grow? Or like, pull a Tom Cruise move and make him stand on a box or platform shoes, camera angle tricks...?
