I've been a marine mechanic for over thirty years. I'm a three time master tech, Mercury, Mercruiser and Yamaha. I've seen a lot change over the years and I have to say, it's never been more interesting working on what is out there now and looking to what is coming. Fly by wire, direct injection, vessel control systems all make for a challenging and exciting work environment. I've really gotten into mentoring the next generation of tech's because it's a good career, working outdoors, driving cool boats and fixing stuff...

@@viewfromthebilge Well I been working on boats for over 50 years. I'm certified for Mercury outboards and Mercruiser. I've been to Volvo schools and OMC schools. I have over $100,000 invested in tools. I'm at the end of my career and retiring next year and I'm making only $35,000 a year. I couldn't even afford to buy a house in my lifetime.

If you want to make a living in this business, you have to work by flat rate or "book time". Mercury is not fair with the time they pay to perform a specific task. I was once paid 45 minutes to change the wiring harness on a 350 verado. That is the entire engine wiring harness!! This is just an example. Suzuki is the worst, mercury in the middle, and yamaha (I hate to say it as I was a die hard merc guy) is the most fair. I love you Mercury, but if you want the best techs, you gotta pay fair.

It would also depend on where you live or where you're looking to live. In Ontario, you could apply to the Marine Engine Mechanic program at Georgian College, or you can apply to a dealership looking to hire an apprentice. Florida has the Marine Mechanics Institute (MMI). Both are amazing ways to enter the industry as a technician or apprentice technician. I'm sure other states and provinces have other training paths as well. As said in the first reply, checking with your local dealer can at least give you some direction. Good luck!!

This industry, for reasons that won't matter to you, is one of the hardest to get into. Unfortunately, they are locked into the dealership model and because of that, there is only one way in (well, two if you want to move to FL). If you are already certified by any manufacturer and have experience, the path is much easier as you can start working right away and then just start your training online with mercury and wait for winter for the in person classes. If you don't have a relevant skill set, you will have to find the nearest mercury dealer and show up Monday morning with a broom and a good attitude. Tell them you will work for whatever they want to pay. Tell them your plan and that you don't expect them to come out of pocket for your training. While they think about it, keep showing up and working for free. In a week if they don't say yes, go on to another shop and repeat. Any shop that tries to set barriers between you and every certification you can get (and they exist) is not a place you want to work anyway. Some of the techs in the shop will see you as a threat, but hopefully there will be an old salt there who is willing to show you a thing or two in exchange for a strong back. Find that guy and let him know that if he has time and sees something interesting, to call you over and show you. Manufacturers are partnering with community colleges and there is MMI in florida, but to be totally candid, their graduates don't have the best reputation, nor are their skill sets well rounded. I have long thought that this barrier to entry is a tragic mistake and that the first manufacturer to knock this artificial barrier down will gain one heck of an advantage. There really isn't any reason why someone shouldn't be able to sign up on mercuryuniversity (now performance4suceessfactors or some run-on like that) and enroll in the online classes for free. Mercury could come up with a fair price for their live online and in person classes and be certifying qualified persons whether or not they spent time on the broom. Good luck
