5 Reasons To AVOID Moving To Myrtle Beach Sc

- I moved to Myrtle Beach, SC in 1998 from Reading PA with my family. When we moved, our agent didn't share these 5 items that might have made us pause on making the move to the area. They didn't represent us very well and so that is one of the main reasons I make the video I do for consumers thinking of moving to Myrtle Beach. Take the time to watch this video and make sure Myrtle Beach is the right place for you because if you can get past these 5 items, you can enjoy the beautiful beaches here, gorgeous weather, and rather affordable cost of living that Myrtle Beach, SC has to offer.
If you are OK with the items I mention in this video, and still thinking you want to experience living in Myrtle Beach, please reach out to me, my contact info is below.

Hi Jeremy, you should also mention the issues of finding medical people here in the Grand Strand area due to the lack of doctors here. Dental is much better now than just 10 years ago, but medical slants more towards the clinics rather then the traditional doctor office most of us are accustomed.
Thanks. For me, it is the Summer humidity and mosquitoes. I visited sc five year ago. The humidity and mosquitoes drove me right back to California.
A few things to know if you are considering moving to the Myrtle Beach area.
The “Grand Strand” is a 30-mile stretch along the coast from Pawleys Island up the North Carolina state line with Myrtle Beach City in the middle. Don’t confuse Myrtle Beach with North Myrtle Beach (a separate city 10 miles away). There are both advantages and disadvantages to living within the Myrtle Beach city limits. Note that not all locations with a Myrtle Beach address are in the city of Myrtle Beach, many are not. There are even enclaves completely surrounded by Myrtle Beach City that are not part of the city.
There is a 9% county and 1% city tourist tax on restaurant meals and lodging. Property taxes are quite low after your first full calendar year as a full-time resident. Second home and rental property are taxed higher. Full time residents get rebates on School and Tourism taxes and a homestead exemption (plus smaller senior and veteran’s exemptions). This can take a $3700 tax bill down to $1000.
Myrtle Beach city residents get a parking sticker for each car that allows free year-round parking at all parking meters, city lots, and beach access street ends. The city provides water, sewer, trash, and recycling on one bill. Electricity is from state owned Santee Cooper and some parts of the city have natural gas.
You have to pay a one-time import fee to bring your car into the state so, if you plan to sell or trade it soon, best to not register it here, but sell it out of state or trade it to a dealer.
Nice info as always!
Thanks Jeremy for being so honest.
You are welcome!
Thank You for this honest video! We are thinking to move there too
Great video, very thorough.👍
If your heart isn’t in it. And you don’t love the slow pace, please by all means please stay in the north.
Amen!
Stay home and shovel that snow!
Thank you for the informative video. My wife and I are also from the Reading Pa. area. Perhaps sometime next year we can plan a trip to your area to look around and find out what it’s like to live there. Thanks again!
Come during tourist season in the summer then you'll get a true picture of what it's like
I HATE winter. I don't like snow, but what I really hate is the cold, -35 degrees. I'm sick of it!!!
This past Monday the morning temp was in the teens. It gets cold here
I vacationed in north myrtle beach last July for a week at kingston plantation. I loved it down their. I'm pretty sick of the cold and the crappy weather. I love watching your videos. What do you think of spartenburg? My company i work for oshkosh defense moved part of the company down their. Really thinking of moving close to the ocean. Thanks!
In Kansas, used to live by the beach in Western Australia and miss it. MB seems very pretty and I'm sick of cold temps, snow and staying inside 4 months of the year!❤
Pawleys Island is a much better place than MB. We moved here from San Diego and love it.
Thanks for sharing, it’s snowing here in Ky as I’m typing this. Hubby just shoved 8 inches of snow yesterday and it’s snowing more! I’m ready for Myrtle Beach! Not planning on moving there yet, but hotel is already booked for June.
Just to let you know, this past Monday the temp was in the teens
We had a few days the past week that got kinda cool, down into the 20's during the night, but then this past weekend, it was 75! Luckily, while we have a few cold days, snow shoveling is something you don't have to deal with here!
Jerry, Dana and I are so happy to be starting our “return move” back to the Grand Strand with you at the helm!! Thanks for all your help thus far!! See you soon! Absolutely love your videos!!!
I look forward to helping you in the near future!
Vanilla keeps the mosquitoes away. I promise. Vanilla scented body lotion will make you smell like cupcakes but, mosquitoes will leave you alone.
Avon Skin so Soft! The best way!
So does taking B complex vitamins.
I moved to Myrtle Beach 20 years ago, and have loved it! I came from Atlanta. Main reason for leaving was the traffic. There is no comparison here. It's like 15-20 min. compared to Atl's 1 solid hour to go same distance. Cost of living is considerably lower than the N. E.!
MB is the fastest growing area in the US, and housing is not keeping up with the demand. So those are some things to ponder. It's a great place to vacation or retire!
Fastest growing area, except for road development
Its also high crime and extremely boring
My heart doctor said no more shoveling, since he wasn’t coming over to do it during these Massachusetts blizzards I came down. One thing people need to know 9% sales tax on everything adds up quick.
Thank you. Im def wanting to move.
Nailed it Jeremy!
thanks!
If you like shopping, restaurants, golf, & the beach & retired you should be ok
I've been here 8 years from Florida and I love it. They're other places to live outside of Myrtle Beach.
You didn't talk about the astronomical rise in wind and flood insurance for Horry County, the wait of 3 to 6 months to see a real MD and not a NP, and the need for allergy meds due to constant pollination.
Move to Va. you might wait 3 months for a specialist. I live within the mountains and it is a bit like a bowl. It traps allergy causes. Most every adult I know has developed allergies. I hear this from many areas of the country.
Tourism is the best thing if you’re a full time resident. My taxes went down $5000 once I proved I was a full time resident. So I say “Welcome Tourists. Hope you have a wonderful time”
I want out of the snow but I also want lower taxes and slower pace of living! I just returned home from my annual vacation to surfside and want to go back.
I just took my 1st vacation to North myrtle.Beach south carolina and I thought it was beautiful, with that being said I'm form nys albany,ny area and I'm tired of the snow and cold high taxes and the corrupt government in nys, when I retire in 3 years I'm coming your way for sure I though I was gonna live in Florida but south Carolina changes my mind !!! ❤
I am 41, and have been to both Florida, and South Carolina. I already told my Wife South Carolina is my preference by a long shot. I just hope that SC does not become like Florida (Over populated, and too expensive) by the time I can hopefully retire in 26 or so years.
Thanks for the video Jeremy. I'm also from the Albany NY area and plan on moving down soon. I've come every year for the last 5-6 years golfing. I plan on making the move. Funny, another user left a comment below from albany,ny too. Yeah...we hate the snow. My property and school taxes are $8000/year. Not doing it anymore. I'm coming down this May for some house hunting.
Let me know when you are heading down and we can get some time scheduled to meet up and help you find your perfect house at the beach!
I love north Myrtle beach. I was there about 3 months ago. I’m going again in about a week. I would love to move there. Everyone seemed to just go with the flow. I’m tired of the million people near me and and the traffic. The tourism during the summer there is like my usual number of people I see all year.
You need to visit in July, August. Then you can decide based on facts. Winter doesn't give you an accurate picture
Phoenix is overcrowded, Myrtle beach looks pretty 😊
Look into Pawleys Island. Better location less traffic much less crowded.
You didn’t mention the truck kids cruising the Blvd, taking over cookout, blasting rap music, etc
I’m thinking about moving to Myrtle Beach I am a Jersey Girl the weather here is not good for me. I have several autoimmune diseases and the cold weather isn’t good for me. Thank you for the info.
It gets cold here in the winter. Temp in the teens earlier this week
I get it as someone with an autoimmune challenge. my concerns are excess heat, mosquitoes (carrying viruses) and how effin hard it is to find organic healthy food. Fried food is a killer for AI disorders
@trainingxtrish it gets very hot in SC, the humidity is a killer. Unless you live in a large city like Columbia or Charleston you will be hard pressed to find organic food, and housing process are high in those big cities. Even in my tiny little town the housing process are going up. Don't even begin to talk about the mosquitoes that can carry you off. But at least we're not shoveling snow
Does South Carolina have roof replacement requirements like Florida? Is homeowner insurance high like Florida ?
I want OUT of the snow. Now. But mostly …NY TAXES!
I've been here 4 years. Maybe just 2 months I run ac, and maybe 2 months running furnace. Utilities are cheaper than up north. Only issue is no major interstate within 65 miles of MB. Bugs are not bad because the lizards take care of them. I'm within 2 miles of the beach so it stays green pretty much year round.
I wanna live in one of those beach hotel/resort rooms if that’s even possible
A tourist moves to the beach and complains about the tourists. 😂
Yes from Ohio here, tired of the snow and taxes and house prices up here!
Left there 35 years ago and never looked back.
Thanks for the info, Peter Griffin does a grind your gears?
Are bugs inside the house a problem? I’m from up north and that’s one thing good about the cold weather.
Honestly, if you treat your house on a regular basis (every 90 days or so) you won't really have that many issues with bugs in the house. If you hire a pest control company to do quarterly treatments, you should be good to go!
Can I ask you the name of the insurance lady you have on from time to time and the name of of her company? I may have a potential customer for her. Thanks In Advance
Now that is close to full disclosure if ever.
From wisconsin- I need out of the snow lol!
We did 5 years ago - we’re enjoying it very much!!
(From the Appleton area)
I am from Vermont and it's always Cloudy here and raining here
I don't mind the humidity and hot
Hi I live in Maryland I bought my townhouse in 2016 for 250,000$ and now my house is worth around 360,000$ has the market gone up in the same way in Myrtle Beach
Yes, we have definitely seen increases in values since the 2016 time period!
Great video!
My husband and I had been shopping for 3 years for a vacay property. The prices drastically increased during each year.
Also consider the home insurance. We’re in Northern VA and the SC vacay house insurance crazy.
Adjusting to Palmetto bugs is not fun! I’m originally from The Bronx NY and grew up with roaches NOT FUN. So I seriously am having to adjust. Our vacay home is Super clean. We’ve sprayed each month. We have learned from other to close bathroom drains.
The south is laid back. Go live in Phila, Reading, NJ and pay high taxes, high gas price etc.
And NY, the city, everything is high.
I'm sick of 6 to 9 months of winter lol. I "think" I could handle 5 months of extreme heat to enjoy the calm season
Come on down! You can sell that snowblower and retire the winter parka!
Pawleys Island is a much better place than MB. We moved here from San Diego and love it. The weather isn’t as nice as San Diego but the people are nice and the cost of living is 35% less. And we don’t have that California oppressive gvmnt breathing down our backs every day. FYI; we like to drive an hour south to shop in Mount Pleasant. The drive is traffic free and everything is down there; Costco, Trader Joe’s, The Gap, Nordstrom Rack, Target, Hobby Lobby, et al.
I don't care where you live, 3 months to get a patio done is outrageous!
My patio took 3 weeks; you obviously don’t know the right contractor
He just wants to be first in the "Buffet line"
The hustle and bustle is here Traffic Traffic Traffic , Big shortage on Doctors months to get an appointment, route 17 is abandoned buildings ,gas stations , car washes , and horrible looking storage buildings, hopefully I can get out of this hellhole soon.
I see this is an older video, but i live in greenwood, roughly 4 hours and been visiting mb ever since i was a kid. I was actually there for the tornado outbreak july 4 week in 2001. Been thinking about moving. Im tired of plant work, and looking to pay cash for a place even if its living full time in a campground since its just me and my dogs. Of course i would have to sell some things and possibly my current home, but its time for a change.
I am done with snow!
you are not alone friend!
What areas are the best to live in to avoid spring breakers?
You can move in land a little bit and avoid all the tourists and still be 10-15 minutes from the beach. Check out the Conway/ Carolina Forrest area.
Is the winter season as bad as in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan? Trying to find an affordable location for my aging parents who can't stand the snow and cold anymore.
Winters here are super mild!
@@jeremyblanton when you say super mild do you mean it can get below freezing and snow can get to about 4 inches or higher sometimes but not always? I'm asking because my auntie from Oklahoma told my parents that it doesn't snow at all in Oklahoma, so two years ago when we went to visit her in January. And the next day when my parents walked outside and saw snow as high as up to their knees, they freaked out and said, "Nope! Oklahoma ain't it. Let's look somewhere else."
@@tonzhoyaj7598 It can get cool here at times. Once in a blue moon we will get some snow. I've lived here since 1998 and the most I ever remember seeing during that time was about 1.5". My youngest daughter who is now 9 has seen snow 3 times in her life.
Originally from Wisconsin - moved here 5 years ago. Had 1 inch of snow total; snowed at 7 am, was gone by 11:30 !!
(No more black ice either!)
@@kendallrasmussen2183 that's awesome to know. Thanks for sharing. 👍
I'm moving down to Myrtle Beach at the end of April. I'll be like 4 blocks from the beach in a brand new townhouse.
make sure you lock your car and don't leave anything worth any money outside in the myrtle beach proper area!
Hi Jerry i want out of Snow & Black ice & Crime
.
You didn’t mention the "palmetto bugs" (aka giant roaches)!
10% sales tax in Myrtle Beach, with $50k disposable income that's $5k per year, sales tax in New York is 4%.
10% sales tax doesn't apply to local residents. It's 5% for locals
@@gregbertsch2853 oh you don't say, please my friend explain exactly how a local gets this special treatment.
@stevelong9328 Ummmm you show your ID. As long as your a resident of Horry County you only pay the standard state sales tax. Is like that in most tourist cities that they add the additional tourist tax.
@@gregbertsch2853 I don't know about "most tourist cities" and I doubt you do either because you are wrong about Myrtle Beach sales tax, if you show your local ID it will not help at all.
Can you explain this $50,000 disposable income?
Things are not cheaper in SC. Way too many people moving here. Traffic is terrible. No more off season. 8-9% tax on things you buy. Homes are so overpriced.
I used to have a small business in Myrtle Beach back in the 80's - when it was still "somewhat uncrowded". Relocated after 7 or 8 years to Florida. Still remember the grocery stores & restaurants raising prices during the "main tourist season". Wife & I returned to Myrtle Beach, for a Harley Bike gathering, in May of 2010. The entire Grand Strand was total chaos with the amount of growth, traffic, and commercialization we encountered. We will never go back. And to those of you that went there on vacation and just "loved" the area... your reality of living there full-time is distorted.
It's much much better there than Florida...lol...
It's not just the tourists that drive like that
I want out of the snow
I was from Texas
I have issues with contractors….give them a slot and make them keep to it…completion is the essence of the contract ..build in failure date fines for non completion and shoddy workmanship…get them to sign it..
I spend 4 weeks a year in MB. I can see only one reason not to live there. TRAFFIC! This is the one any only reason.
to much traffic in the summer . no jobs
Escape fropm New York!! For me it's culture and taxes.
None of his negatives seems that bad
Well it is the 4th most dangerous city in South carolina
Taxes are cheaper, Im leaving NC
I have been here since 1991. This is the greatest place in the US. You are full of Sh.. Not being rushed and hustled is the greatest. Who cares about the work part. You are crazy. Please DONT MOVE HERE!!!! STAY UP NORTH.
Come by swig and swine. I’m the pit boss for the Myrtle Beach location.
Stay away! It’s full down here folks.
Yall need to stay in the northeast
Tourism is close to 20 million now
Americans think they always can live relaxed and blessed, while we are relaxed other countries like China, India work hard and step to our neck 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
i want out of snow and taxes michigan
Well I can defintely help with that! Let me know how I can help!
i will i plan to sell in the spring thanks!@@jeremyblanton
South Carolina gas taxes are the lowest in the USA. Therefore, gasoline is cheaper. However, most of your roads are in very poor repair/condition due to the lack of insufficient gas taxes collected to maintain adequate repairs. For example, after leaving I-95 north out of GA into SC, the terrible infrastructure maintenance becomes quite obvious. Also, anyone living in a designated "tourist trap" will soon have regrets.
All the slow drivers here are the worst.
Sick of the illegals and politics out here in Texas.. is that a problem in South Carolina?
I live on lake keowee in upstate SC next to the Blue ridge mountains & I absolutely love it here
He’s just trying to get y’all not to move there.
Having been to MB numerous times. This dude just doesn’t want northerners moving there.
Shathole
The reason why I don’t want you to move here is because chances are you are from the Northeast and will bring your nauseating blue state political views with you. Conservatives are most welcome.
Yankee transplants stay at home please.
Now give us the 100 reasons to leave Pennsylvania…🤡
This dude is just trying to steer people away from moving to Myrtle Beach for selfish reasons 😒
Does South Carolina have roof replacement requirements like Florida? Is homeowner insurance high like Florida ?
Yes, if you live in the hurricane wind pool area, the insurance is high.
Further away from the coast is much cheaper. Mine went up 200% in the last 5 years, but I live half a mile from the beach within MB city limits.
And then the insurance company drops you and you have to scramble to find a new company after a year or two and then they are ridiculously high.
@@SICKIX you only answered part of my question. Read the first sentence.
@@nf2885we live in Pawleys Island one mile from the beach. House is two years old and the cost of insurance is the same as what we paid in San Diego. The rates went up over the last years because the cost of replacing the house went up dramatically. Before retiring here I sold real estate in San Diego county so the raise in insurance cost is something of which I’m keenly aware.
