    20:50 Bury was removed in 6th edition for clarity and because it was "Unintuitive". It was simultaneously being used as "Destroy target creature, it can't be regenerated" like you mentioned, but also was used as "Sacrifice a creature" in any card that had that as an alternate cost. When they did their big rules overhaul with 6th edition (The same overhaul that introduced the Stack) they removed the keyword to split it's 2 uses apart.

    6:45 Abolish is one of my favorite white cards. Especially if youre playing Land Tax, you'll always have the Plains in your hand. But nobody expects it when you're tapped out

      As is the appropriate action. You could also replace Avatar of woe with Nickachu it be equally accurate.

    I honestly like the Rhystic mechanic as a mechanic, they just vastly underestimated how much weaker a card with it is. Most 'rhystic' cards should have either their CMC reduced by 1 or the tribute cost increased by 2 - that's about the point at which they'd be decent cards (though not necessarily competitive, but then again only like 2% of cards are competitive).

      Also, just realized that Ward is basically Rhystic Hexproof.

    I started playing right about when you did (First boosters were tempest, but that was as a kid; Masks was the first I went to play on release at the LGS) and I gotta say, FoW was never two dollars here. You could get one in really crappy condition for about 80 SEK, which is about 10 canadian dollars, but more often people paid the equivalent of 12-15 canadian dollars. But yeah, compared to *today* it was cheap for sure; it was a card us teenagers could have in our decks (though often one of the most expensive cards in a deck).

    Loved masques block. I was heavily invested in tuning the Rising Waters deck of the time. My ELO exploded during that time and almost got to represent Norway at Worlds (and would have done better than Herzog >_>)

    Rhystic Cave, effectively says, Spells you attempt to cast with this mana can't be played unless your opponents chose not to pay 1.

    They got rid of 'bury' because they stopped using 'regenerate' (or vastly reduced its use).

    • @semidirect
      @semidirect Před 10 měsíci +1

      But then still made a lot of cards that counter regenerate?

    • @jonhoge153
      @jonhoge153 Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@semidirect i have no idea the timeline of when bury first appeared/ disappeared but it would have made sense to keep 'bury' until regenerate was forgotten. But once regenerate is rare enough theres no need for bury because its use would have to be even more rare or regenerate would have less value. Makes sense to eventually scrap rarely-used keywords to lower the learning curve for new players.
      After all those words i figured out a better way to put it. If a mechanic is so rarely implemented that you have to use the reminder text every time you print it, theres no point in keeping the keyword (unless theres synergistic reasons for doing so)

    • @semidirect
      @semidirect Před 10 měsíci

      @@jonhoge153 That makes sense.
      Though I wish they wouldn't have ditched regenerate completely, I kind of liked it.

    • @jonhoge153
      @jonhoge153 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@semidirect they switched from a regenerate/bury meta to an indestructable/exile meta. Im not sure why. The latter are actually far more impactful on games individually and are even more inseperable of a pair. Its an odd decision if you presume they removed reg/bury for those same reasons (reg too good unless opponent has bury). The only thing i can come up with is they wanted to use exile more for its graveyard hate aspect, and having both exile and bury would complety negate any power regenerate would offer. So they decided to move on from reg but gave us indestructible to pair with exile.

      Untrue, 'bury' got removed in 6th Edition when the rules got a major overhaul. Regeneration was still an evergreen mechanic for many years afterwards. Regen was still going strong at least as far as Lorwyn block and started getting dropped around that point.

  • @TheJadeFist

    Ya, Hexproof was a mistake. Or rather it was too widely available for little to no cost and no downside. Shroud was more fair because it's a cost of you can't target your own creature in addition to a protection from your opponent.
    Hexproof if it was very rare and far between, and also not paired so often on the same card with "Can't be countered", I don't think it would be a bad mechanic. But facing a deck of enemies you can't counter or target once their on the board and they can still buff them and do what ever they want, is kinda lame. Not even lame for blue but lame for red burn, or black or white, green probably the one color that doesn't care the about hexproof on the opponent's side so much.
