    Another great history story! You did an amazing job gathering all the information and presenting it! I didn't know all the background of Coco Chanel. I love her handbags and have quite a few. I'm always impressed by people like her who come from nothing and make their mark in life. Estee Lauder being another. What she created takes someone with a lot of passion (and luck). She created an empire. We will never fully understand why she made some of the decisions in her personal life but I just look at what she created and have to admire that.

      Thanks Mikki! It's true that we'll never truly understand her motivation behind some of her decisions, but we can still appreciate other things she did 😁

    I love this series! I didn’t know Coco’s entire story, but for many years I have been aware that she was allegedly a nazi sympathizer. I definitely do not judge her for being a kept woman; I think she did what she had to do. However, I am the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, so I do judge her alleged anti-semitism. You are a great story teller; I can’t wait for the next installment! 😊❤️

    Hi Ally, Wow, not sure how to feel. So many details of Coco's life which don't reflect my own views. I do respect her "art". She created a persona and brand that is iconic and for that I admire her. I have a necklace, a replica of one that Jackie Kennedy owned called the "Paper Clip" necklace. Coco made a necklace out of French paper clips in 1920 on the spur of the moment in her salon. Who else but Coco could do that? Thanks for such an in depth look at her life. You really made me think about her in another light.. Great job!

    Fabulous presentation on Coco! Another very interesting and complex woman. No judgment from me - I try not to because times were SO DIFFERENT and she isn’t here to answer questions. Yes, it sounds like some unfortunate choices but what drove her to those choices? Separate the art from the artist....if only we knew all the stories of so very many famous people of the past (and present for that matter!). Well done Allison - you have put so much work into these videos and your presentations are wonderful.

      Allison Chase in 60 years of living, I’m less and less surprised by the things I discover about people. Sometimes it is wonderful and sometimes awful. Human beings are nothing if not complicated. 😊. My Mom wasEnglish and 21 years old when WW2 broke out. She lived through the horrors of London and the blitz and all of it. It made her a strong woman but the downside is that she never EVER trusted a German person after that for most of her life. It got better as she got older but she died at 85 with some unforgiveness still in her towards Germans. I don’t judge her, as she was an amazing person and I didn’t experience what she did. Perhaps Cocos time in the convent was harder than we know - an anti-Semitic nun perhaps? Who knows. 😘

    Allison’s, you’ve outdone yourself with this Chanel exposé. I read a biography of Coco Chanel many years ago and it was certainly an eye opener. You’ve presented her story in an unbiased way and have allowed me to ponder my feelings about her antisemitism stance. I still find that she has a special place in fashion history. And as a woman who came from humble beginnings and rose to make a name for herself. I’m looking forward to your next beauty history instalment.

    This was quite eye opening! Complicated indeed! Ugg..You know I think this is a cautionary tale of the nature of people. She didn’t start Chanel with racist ideals and intent but she developed then through dealings with people, creating a whole mindset from that one experience. They say the worst thing about Nazi Germany was that this was a supposed society of enlightenment and brilliance..and yet they could commit the most vile crimes against humanity. As an African American I know Walt was not particularly fond of blacks right and yet I still love Disney films. The brand of Disney evolved after his passing as I believe the same is true for the brand Chanel. So I do think Allison you can separate the brand from the artist IF the brand is not rooted in that hatred itself. Excellent presentation, you really did your research!

    • @AllisonChase
      @AllisonChase  Před 4 lety

      Thank you so much Christina! I totally agree with you. I think people like Walt and Chanel created things that we can appreciate today and still call out their racist or antisemitic behaviour. I think with people like them, since they are no longer alive today, they themselves don't benefit from us supporting their brands because we are not trying to support them directly, rather the companies they left behind.

    Hi Ally, beautiful exposition. Thank you. Chanel's history is not new to me. Since being a Fashion designer myself, I came across it many times. Personally, I definitely think that we can divide one's creations from the person itself. The moment there is a product, even though I created it, it has the life of it's own. It is a separate object and does not share a life, believes, etc of the creator, especially given the fact that the objects are not alive, so don't "think". Today, though the Fashion house still carries her name, in fact has little to do with her. Different people own it, different people work within it. As for Chanel being anti-Semitic: let's not forget, that she was ignorant, uneducated women, who was driven by survival mainly. And if British upper society, which was very educated, was anti-Semitic, why wouldn't she? As for British aristocracy-not surprisingly either. It is so deeply rooted in whole Europe, some countries less, others more, but Europe is Anti-Semitic, period. Blame religion, prejudices and fear of unknown.

    • @AllisonChase
      @AllisonChase  Před 4 lety +4

      Hi Ella!
      I love your thoughts on dividing creations from the designer, it was beautifully put and it makes a lot sense. I'm inclined to believe that as well. And I'm also inclined to believe you as well when it comes to British upper society and Europe as well. It's a sad unfortunate fact.

    Hi Allison, thank you for this very informative video about the life of Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel. I don't blame her one bit for being a mistress or associating with wealthy men to survive and get ahead. The deck was stacked against her, so she did what she had to do. As far as being anti Semitic and working as a nazi spy, I do not approve or applaud it but wonder if she thought it was a way for her to gain respect from the ruling political power at the time. She probably never thought Germany would lose the war and wanted to be highly regarded by the Nazi's once it was over. Do you think she could have made this decision to be a Nazi sympathizer and spy to ensure her own survival?

    👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Love this series!! So entertaining as I used my NuFace and did a moisture mask. 🤣🤣 I do not judge her. Was a terrible time to be a woman. The anti-Semitic part of her life might have been driven by the sour taste of the men who stole her business profits. Plus, the crowd she ran with during that difficult time. We don’t really know how she was drawn in. Could have been as simple as the fear of losing everything and going back to a poor, hopeless life from her beginnings. Who knows. Its much different for women today. Thank you, Lord! 🙌

    I don’t judge Coco and am a huge admirer of her. She is an inspiration for women who are entrepreneurs now. If she could do it, by using her passion, intelligence and network in those times, we can definitely do it. She was a woman of incredible strength, alone, depending on the ones she trusted. Those were hard times but her boldness made her famous and her fashion is still worn. No other designer of her time achieved that.

    I would agree from looking into and reading past history, that Chanel was probably a collaborator and lived on the backs of the Paris Ritz. The Managers (a couple) of the Ritz were extremely brave as they worked with the French Resistance during the war, whilst managing and living under the same roof as the high echelon German Officers, including Goering. Maybe it was survival and the love of a man during this time.

    She really had to go through all... The turn of the century, the first and second world wars, let us not forget the recess between the two wars!
    Honestly, before Brexit, COVID and the current Russian offence I probably would've been more judgemental, than I am now. Our economy is plunging and all I can have hope in is actually an absolute crash otherwise it is just a never ending suffering. And this is still nothing compared to the hardships of her life.
    She was definitely an opportunist and so am I, when given I like to make the most out of it. But at any cost? Not sure. We also can't know how she actually felt about the things she did choose to allegedly do.
    I think art can be separated from artist, however depends on the art :D very subjective, but I'd like to point out that there is art out there with specifically political expressions (not necessarily propaganda, but an artist's own source of creation!) And plenty of art which might actually encourage certain beliefs with the intention of making an impact, and an infinitely vast amount of art with subconscious bias.
    Now what I don't think is okay to do, is to reject everything (art and other creations/inventions) because of their creator's morals. Our morals as humans have evolved and keep evolving hence the ends of pagans, the age of enlightenment and now wokeness, in my opinion we'll strive to always find the highest moral ground, but should not judge those before us, because they haven't yet lived through and learnt from what was already there for us, now.
    I choose to believe that she decided to support that war criminal because of simple love, and not because of the support of a system invented by an absolute madman.
    Thank you for this video and all your research!
