Btw the instrument in 5miinust isn’t violin, but talharpa. A traditional baltic sea (Swedish/Finnish/Estonian/Karelian) folk instrument. And like Måns said, recipe to success is to "bring a instrument no-one's heard of." Now it's the time to introduce Europe this beautiful intstrument!

If 5 Miinust and Puuluup can pull of a great performance I can see them winning actually. The song is already the most streamed and popular song here (5 Miinust is pretty famous so not really a surprise) and defo has gotten people talking. Personally I have Ollie as a winner, I just can't think of a scenario where he will mess anything up with the performance and I actually think everything will be even better live. As long as one of these 2 go, I'll be happy, because we have never sent a rock song nor sent a song in estonian for a while so I'm hoping for something new and spicy.

As someone who is quite active in Reddit, I can assure you the Esc Reddit community are never being bitchy about you. In fact, you're always getting mentioned everytime someone asked "Who's your favourite ESC CZcamsr?". And don't worry, us in Reddit also love 5Miinust & Puuluup's song too (it is highly beloved there besides Ollie's song) 😅
Speeking about 5Miinust, someone on Reddit actually made a post explaining how big and popular they are in Estonia and currently their song is now at No.2 in the Estonian charts. So there is a possibility for them to win the whole thing (unless the jury tanked them).

Me, as an estonian from Estonia, have 5MIINUST & Puuluup also as my Number 1... 1) it’s catchy, 2) it’s dancy, 3) the song is in native language (in estonian) 4) it has this 2:09 interesting and outstanding dance moves, 5) newish type of music genre. A strong one and also stood out heavily. Not to mention the fact that the audience/fans from Europe and from the whole world most likely would love this type of music vibe/beat. Love this song so much that i got this feeling if it only could last much longer then 2 minutes and 49 seconds, in fact never want it to end while listening to it.

I don't do tops myself but if I had to choose my three favourites from our selection, they'll be the exact same songs and probably in the same order as well. Last (well, actually this) year I wanted Ollie to win EL SO bad but now I have a very strong feeling that it will be 5MiinustxPuuluup for me this time. Usually I'm not that much into those "crazy" entries we have at Eesti Laul every year but "(Nendest)..." is really something else. I've had it on repeat since yesterday when I first listened to it.
My Friend isn't as good as Venom, unfortunately, it's a bit too safe and mediocre and not as catchy, in my personal opinion. I was actually a bit worried about Ollie coming back so soon because I was afraid to be disappointed. I'm not too disappointed, ofc but still, yeah.. PS Glad you like Estonian 😊. It will be 11 years since we had a song in our own language in ESC. Such a shame.

Not a bad selection. Appreciate the diversity as you pointed out. Stood out to me a few of them:
    - 5miinust & Puuluup (good energy and beat...can do well across, even at ESC)
    - Anet Vaikmaa (not a super production but enjoyed listening to it nonetheless; seems created by a AI)
    - Antsud (a bit of folk rock..why not...if vocals are spot on, might qualify)
    - Cecilia (90' vibe...very enjoyable but don't think it will look good live)
    - Daniel Levi (something special about this one)
    - Ewert and the Two Dragons (cute; love the progression of the song)
    - Peter Põder (got hooked at the start but doesn't go anywhere in particular unfortunately)
Ollie's song is a no for me. This hard rock type of a song is just old fashion to me. Blind Channel again which I hated in 2021

Great vid as always. Eesti Laul ALWAYS has music videos for every single song, so if you can't find it on CZcams, just check the ERR websites 😉 regarding the automatic qualifiers, we had 215 songs to listen through, so most likely you will remember and lean towards the songs that are immediately recognizable and sound like something you generally like. If you are not in the right mood after 30 crap songs, some of the riskier entries might be too edgy to get a high grade and you just move on (all 215 songs were graded 0-5, we didn't know the artists). In the end we also sent 5 songs we thought deserved a place in the final. Somehow they then combined the grades and lists and we got the automatic qualifiers. How exactly, no idea. Anyway, those are some of my thoughts 😀

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  Před 5 měsíci +3

Thanks Gerd. Yea I totally get that, I think making someone listen to 215 songs is insane. Especially since many of them are really bad or amateur, so I would imagine it is such a relief when you get to the better produced songs, even if they are kind of bland, It’s going to be such a breathe of fresh air to listen to something that sounds professional. I think it would be better if they narrowed it down to around 50 and then you ranked those because then you’d feel less jaded. Also interesting to hear about that 0 to 5 ranking system. Because it favours songs that consistently get a lot of threes and fours, as opposed to something like 5Miinust which probably got a lot of 5s but also a lot of 0s. I think the automatic qualifiers would be different if they only totalled up how many five points each song got

I was SOOO looking forward to your reaction to this batch! I'll comment in the order that you've reviewed them.
Agreed with your reaction to the first song. Its such a weird concotion of discordent noises and a party beat that makes you want to get up and dance. I made a face when i heard the first 30 seconds of the song, but as mych as it pains me, i fell in love with it as it progressed! Kind of reminds me of an Easten European version of Rednex 😂 Loved it.
Anet Vaikmaa - This one really caught me out. Its generally not my type of music but im absolutely loving it. I feel that this is what Lesley Roy felt like she was wanting to deliver in 2020. It almost reminds me of Gabriella Cilmi's 'On A Mission'.
Love the guitars, the various levels in the song that add interest, the synths, the upbeat pace. I cant see this representing Estonia, but i wouldnt be mad if it did. For now its one that i'll add to my personal playlist.
Anstud are folksy and pretty but forgetful. It wont qualify. I like the different element it brings but i stopped caring 30 seconds in.
Brother Appollo - Its so early 2000's Limp Bizkit, but too polished and pop. Hate the cringe lyrics but i can see it doing okay at Eurovision. Its a bit too clinical for me.
Cecilia - reminds me of Milk Inc or Lasgo.....an early 2000's commercial trance track. Not bad at all, but Its just okay at best. It doesnt really go anywhwere for me, and i grew up loving this kind of music.
Ewert & The Two Dragons - Very much like a cross between Travis & the Verve. Its brain numbingly innofensive but quite forgetful overall.
Inga - Enjoyed it to start off with. Loved the dark industrial but upbeat sound, then drops out to nothing and goes nowhere. Its like an Aminata Savadogo album track. Some great sounding elements to it, but another one i feel doesnt go anywhere for Eurovision aside from being quite unique sounding.
Carlos Ukaeda - Reminded me massively of Victor Vernicos, that thumping beat and the jangly guitars. Its got a lot more enegry than Victor Vernicos song, but i dont see it doing well at Eurovision.
Ingmar - Didnt enjoy this at all. Its so west end stage. Not for me.
Laura Poldvere - Not for Eurovision at all and even if it did sneak in to represent Estonia, they wont qualify. I'd happily listen to this if i was getting ready for work and it was on in the background, i wouldnt mind it. Its such a dated 90's ballad with all the typical elements found in 90's balladry.
Daniel Levi - Enjoyed this one. He has such a beautiful voice, but i feel they need to lean more in to the orchestral feel as the song progresses....like so much more. The beautiful piano reminds me of 'Blackbird' by Norma John from a few years ago. Its pretty.
Cartoon - to me its very Rag & Bone Man. Agreed with you that the pre-chorus is stunning. The rest of it is too one note for Eurovision.
Ollie - Personally i didnt like the way his vocal sounded. Like he was pressing his mouth too close to the microphone and slurred some of the words.
The rest of the song.......he produced something more 'Rasmus' than Rasmus ever could. For me again its a throwback to the early 2000's pop rock, which works, but doesnt do much for me.
Peter Põder - Started out loving this one, as i did with all the other recent synthy sounding Eurovision artists (Isaac Sene "Kuuma Jäbä" & Benjamin "Hoida Mut"), but this one failed to hold my interest past the minute mark. Needed a darker synth sound.
Silver Jusilo - Lovely little nuances and sounds in production akin to something by Royksopp. Its unusual but not substantial enough for the Eurovision stage.
Nele-Liis Vaiksoo - really reminds me of 'Voda' by Ana Soklic in 2020. Pretty. Not for Eurovision though.
Sofia Rubina - Awful 😂 For me the worst of the lot. It actually irritates me 😂😂
Traffic - In my top 5! Absolute german Gay club music 😂 in the vein of German dance act 'Scooter'....its fun and commercial and for methe singer is quite the daddy 😂
Yonna - I actually like this. It builds beautifully, sounds expensive, delicate, yet again another one that could have been produced by Royksopp.
Uudo Sepp - A very early 2000's ballad. All i wrote down was "Great voices", "dated" & "Taylor Swifty". Not for me.

    1) My Friend - Ollie
    2) Over the Moon - Daniel Levi

    4) Bad Boy - Brother Apollo

I watched your playlist yesterday without knowing who the five automatic finalists were, and - apart from Daniel Levi - none of the songs left an impression. It's a shame there's only room for five more.
Despite being first on that playlist, I never forgot 5MIINUST (like I forgot many of the songs that came after). I can't wait to see what they come up with for the semifinal.
My favorites, though, were Sofia Rubina and Antsud. I seem to be in a minority but I'm happy to have discovered them; that's one thing I love about following the national finals.
Also, Tom, this is one of your most hilarious videos. I don't know if it was brought on by the burden of having to watch and comment on 20 songs, but I was weeping at one off-hand comment after another (eg 'So what's this guy on fire gonna do?)

Well this is definitely a step down from last year.
My winner by far is Ollie, we know he can it off, he has the voice, worried about the staging, the lyrics are definitely something to reckon with and you can tell it means lots to him.
The long title song is definitely a force to be reckoned with, the Estonian people will love it, it’s a presentation of parody and culture which Eurovision loves.
Then there’s Fomo which I bet will go wrong live, it’s a hard song to sing and pull off live, but the appeal is there definitely.
But my personal contender to My Friend, is Serotinin, such a vibe and pleasant to listen to with 100% Estonian in it, So good.
Overall definitely a weaker year, but I’m begging for Ollie to win, he deserves it and its my taste, but if they do pick the song with the long title I won’t be that upset if it wins .)

ESC Tom a question that doesn't relate to this topic but it is still a Eurovision related question. There is a gay magazine in Great Britain called Attitude (probably the biggest gay magazine in Europe). When the Eurovision was in Liverpool, they never wrote anything about the Song Contest or about any of the must be many LGBTQ+ contestants or other people connected to the contest, with the exeptance of a two page article about Loreen after she had won. I think that this was very odd, since it is common knowledge that Eurovision is a big in the LGBTQ+ community, and the magazine covers all kind of topics in culture and more. ESC Tom why do you think that was?.

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  Před 5 měsíci +2

Yea that’s really surprising. I used to read attitude when I was younger but I haven’t read it in over 10 years now so I’m not sure what they usually talk about anymore. No shade here Tom but it took me 2 attempts to finish this video. I fell asleep during the first one. The community really does owe you a huge debt of gratitude for ploughing through all 20 songs.............so that we dont have too! 😮
Quality wise in Eesti Laul this year?.........personally and purely subjectively of course, I think it's fine........an Irish "fine"!
Can't see any obvious "i must download this immediately" moments.
Likewise, none of these offended my ears either. But isn't that just the definition of "failure" in Malmö?
You must be stirred by music to feel a connection and none of these had that affect on me. But as i said, this is purely subjective.
I think with everything going on (ie the season kicking off and about to be bombarded with entries) i think I'll park Eesti Laul until the week of its final and see, with less songs remaining and live performances to go by, if my opinions have changed. I hope they will have 🫰🫰🫰

My top 20 of Eesti Laul 2024:
20: 5 Miinust: this is just so unfunny and not my thing at all. Hate it, gives me a headache. 1/10.
19: Wunderbar: very cute song but the melody kind of annoys me as does the backing vocal. The lyrics are also too saccharine for me. And the overall vibe of the song kind of gives me a group of middle-aged dads who have a band who are in their "hey fellow kids" era in the most out-of-touch way possible. 2.5/10.
18: No Dog On A Leash: the song's lyrics kind of give me a 1950s wifey who can't get out of where she is which makes me uncomfortable. The song has an interesting vibe as does the video but it just doesn't appeal to me. Good voice though. 2.5/10.
17: Be Good: good voice and fun video but the song is just too all over the place for it to really stick in my head. 3.5/10.
16: Here's Where I Draw The Line: very constant and annoying use of vocal effects and the song just drones on and on and goes nowhere. Good voice but a disappointing entry from Laura overall. 3.5/10.
15: Kate Umber Jaa: the song is very inconsistent to me. Great voice and piano but the chorus just feels detached from the verses which are rather pretty to me. The song definitely has some missed potential as it leaves me cold near the end. 4/10.
14: Vetavaim: very repetitive chorus but the lyrics in the verses are actually quite interesting as is the song. Love that it is so Estonian. But I do appreciate it more than I like it IMO. 4.5/10
13: Serotoniin: this is too sugary sweet for me and it just has no oomph or hit that makes it stick for me. Very generic radio filler. 5/10.
12: I Don't Know About You: good voice and interesting song but again it has potential but it just lacks some grit that makes it cold for me. Could be much better. 5/10,
11: Korra Veel: cool voice and song that has a real 80s vibe but it has been done to death and done better by other artists. The song also reminds me of another one that I can't name which is so frustrating. 6.5/10.
10: Hold Me Now: very nice song overall. Feels like a warm hug in song form and the video is so sweet as is the song. But the song doesn't evolve enough for it to stick in my head too much. 6.5/10.
9: Never Growing Up: it has an incredible and climactic ending and a nice build. Great voice and visuals. Feels like something Ed Sheeran would do in a good way. Love the storytelling in the lyrics and it has a great vibe to top it off. But it misses that spark that made Whiskey Won't Forget hit so hard. 7.5/10
8: FOMO: very interesting vibe and I am not sure how it'd be performed but in the studio cut it is a very energetic and cool house banger. It hits in all the right places and she has a great voice and vibe about her. 81p.
7: Over The Moon: fantastic arrangement that makes the song hit even harder. The vocals are sublime as is the overall entry. Love the lyrics and how poetic and beautiful they are, though they are kind of cheesy. All of his entries in Eesti Laul are at the very least amazing. 8.5/10.
6: Lately: this guy looks so much like a guy I know from school that it isn't even funny. The song has a very captivating 80s vibe to it that hooks me in every time. Love his voice and the style of the song is so interesting. interestingly like Peter Poder, they both have evolved so much from their 2022 entries which is great to see. 8.5/10
5: Oblivion; feels like a song that could be in the fight scene if a movie. Has a really intriguing and mysterious vibe to it that I love. The production is incredible as are the vocals and the song just captivates you overall and begs for more than one listen. 8.5/10.
4: Still Love: great harmonies and the song just tells such a heartwarming story that I get sucked into easily every time. Feels exactly like something Ed Sheeran would do in a good way. Could easily be used in the climax of a romance film where the two main characters kiss and fireworks explode around them (kind of like Hold Me Now and Over The Moon, sorta Lately as well). 9/10.
3: Bad Boy: iffy lyrics but everything else about the song kicks ass, especially that breakdown. It's a very Blind Channel-coded song but not in a bad or derivative way. Love it. 9.5/10.
2: Dreaming: an incredibly talented and cute young man with a spellbindingly incredible voice. The song is just that as everything about it gives me chills. The video is also great and it will surely be performed amazingly. Praying this goes to the final. Could easily be used in the end credits of Game of Thrones or something similar to that. 10/10.
1: My Friend: just awesome. Perfect in every way. Incredible voice, sound, instrumental, progression and visuals. Can't wait to see it live. 10/10.
I am so excited to see so many of these live. So many of these songs were a pleasure to listen to and did not feel kike 3 minutes at all. Even if it is less consistent than prior editions there are still any gems scattered around in here that will go into my playlist for years to come. Such a good selection. We disagree loads ofc so don't be shy to share what you think of my top.
