I’ve been working in the Heavy Equipment industry as a mechanic for over five years now…. Neither one of my bosses has had a problem with letting his employees borrow a machine to use around the house as long as we asked permission told him exactly where it was gonna be and treated it as our own… I’ve always went by the motto if you borrow something you return it in better shape then you found meaning a full tank of fuel completely greased and cleaned up….The fact he’s not asking your permission and just taking tells me he’s using it for work that YOUR company could be doing or something else shady of that nature.. And he feels the reward of what ever he may be using it for is bigger than the risk he’s taking of using it without your permission.

I let my guys (foreman only) borrow equipment with a truck and trailer to haul the equipment. I have 3 stipulations.
    1. They are responsible for any costs or damages that occur.
    2. They are the only ones allowed to use the equipment while it's being borrowed.
    3. They are not allowed to use the equipment for side work. If they get caught using my equipment for side work, they will be let go immediately.
If I was in your situation and it was one of my best guys, I would at the very least suspend him for a week. I say a week because a week hurts their pocket. Make sure to explain to him what he did wrong and why it's a big deal. Let him know that lying and distrustful acts will not be tolerated again and will result in immediate termination.

    I mean logically think.
1.) borrowed equipment and broke it without telling you which cost your company money to fix and more to lose due to lack of equipment
2.) did it again and if you WOULDNT have caught him you’d be back at square one
3.) consequences are a voice of reason for some but to fire a person in this economy.
Try this, if you may, ask him what he needs it for. Then worse comes to worse help him and see if the equipment he wants is what he needs also if dock his pay a smidge to pay for the repairs IF you wished. But I’ll say as a business owner myself show some empathy. It’s not needed but if you got your back scratched you should do the same for the guy who got you to your now bridge. He made you a lot of money but cost some damages, does the feather outweigh the deed or no. That sir is up to you as a boss.

Fire him. Sadly a suspension would make him salty. If you wanted to keep him and give him a chance again, let him know his position could still be available in 6 months and to reapply if he really wants to work with you

    Here's a rhyme for you:
I ask ChatGPT and this what it said, “You make a dollar, he makes a dime,
Lend him the gear so you both can climb,
Together you'll thrive, it's no crime,
To profit more during company time." But perhaps you need to create a deposit form where he gives you a deposit and you refund if nothing broke

Be straight with him and tell him that he's fucking up. If he isn't gonna fix it then you're gonna take repairs out of his pay since is his own private work, also take out the hourly rental from his pay as well. Then use the excuse of "once you prove to me you can be responsible and one of my best trusted guys, you'll get free repair and free rental but only if you're making me more money than you're losing and stop fucking up"

    Option 1: formal warning
Option 2: get a system in place where they can "rent it" from you (say for hours of over time) so it is limited, and a perk, and the rout of least resistance which people allways will take

Dam I’m going to agree with the bottom comment. I see this happen all the time at work before you know it all your equipment is missing over the weekend.
Now just because I send some of your videos you seem like a nice guy and your care about your employees. Charge him for using it over the weekend and he is responsible for any damage sign a contract so you protect yourself

  • @pietmondrianstudent6984

If you don't have a written policy, make one now and have all the employees sign one. If they want to take home the equipment for personal use, then let them rent it (maybe at a discount,) but they have to tell you first. If they don't tell you, then it is presumed they are not using it legitimately. make them write the provision in their own hand; that way they cannot say they don't know. The boss of a construction company I worked for let the foremen take hone their company pickups, and generally let them use them for whatever. One day, the bosses wife saw the wife of one of the foremen driving the truck at the supermarket.... that was the end of that.

I would make it very clear that all of the machinery costs money to run and establish some kind of financial responsibility for him if he uses your company machinery. Maybe even offer to let your company cover the job and give him a bigger cut for jobs he sells for you. Also maybe start looking in to moving him from labor to training and sales, you only do side work because you aren’t making enough money at your current job. If he is capable of selling his own work, he can sell yours aswell. A little bit of appreciation and empathy can go a long way, you can show that and strength just by making that one move. Company growth is employee growth. Any kind of positive moves you can make in your company’s growth is a positive move in your company. Moves like this could establish and reinforce loyalty.

I had neighbors that wanted to use a lot of my equipment to do a job. They had no tools and no skills, seriously. The one in charge of the job didn't want to cut me into his job and basically wanted the tools for nearly nothing. My offer was that I set the price and take 50 percent and set the price they would all make a decent wage. He turned me down flat. a few days later one of the other guys told me that they should have taken my offer because they got ran off of the job because they screwed the job up so bad. Now I have borrowed equipment before and broke it several times but I learned a ton on how to repair equipment and very fast.
