  • paulw7uk chess. this is 10-min rapid chess on lichess.org.
    game: lichess.org/qBjGLuK1/white
sadly we encounter what appears to be unfair play in this game. as a played all I can do is report my concerns and then up to lichess and their team to review matters and determine fair play. this account was banned and our rating points have been refunded.

It was the move times that gave it away for me starting at the first of the game all the way through. I hate players that use engines that way in a game against players in this way. No integrity.

yes that is always a big clue, but as I said to someone else, easier to detect for more experienced stronger players, if this was a 1400 cheating exactly the same against a 1000 the 1000 would find it hard to detect, if my opponent was 2600 not 1000 it would be harder for me to spot then think playing someone much stronger and being online never quite that 100% sure, all can do is report concerns and then up to the site playing on to make a decision and lichess will have access to more data behind the scenes that I have. but especially for lower rated players, who will likely make up most of my audience, a game like this gives them something to remember if and when they encounter something themselves.

Paul, I watch your videos every day, and I love your play style and calmness when it comes to playing every single match. If I may ask, do you post videos for a living ? what is your day to day life like ?
    Many Thanks :)

thank you, appreciated. I work from home, part-time, nothing to do with chess.

Its really sad to see this happening more and more frequently, I believe platforms should start asking for ID in order to create an account

yes ID checking is a very good idea, if the sites have the resources to employ and administer it. I am ID checked with both Fide and Chess.com. Lichess have never done such a scheme that I am aware of, though they can check my games via this account anytime but of course most players don't have accounts like this. I played on the Fide online site in 2018 / 19, (still do occasionally) to play for the Fide AIM title, that needed ID verification, and a few years ago Chess.com did a similar ID scheme, which I did, but cancelled it soon after, though did say will be bringing it back at some point, so I will likely do that again, subject to being affordable for me.

I cant stand cheaters man, i get wrecked with no chance of counter play against these cheaters, I Feel for you. I play the Reti too

indeed, same for all of us, engines are rather strong these days, though they can be programmed to play at lower levels, so sometimes you can still win vs the weaker engines but hard to do. such a big problem now with the online chess, all can do is report suspicious games and then up to the site to determine fair play and take whatever action they choose to take. like this game it tends to stand out more when there is a large rating gap between players, harder to spot when ratings are similar or you are playing someone higher rated.

I wonder what the motivation is to cheat in this fashion (literally just copying every engine move). Can't be fun?

yes crazy and silly. when it happens in case where you have a large rating gap like this it stands out more, you can imagine if this was a 1400 cheating in the same way against a 1000, it would be much harder for the 1000 to even be aware cheating was taking place, then it relies on the site the game is played on and their own cheat detection methods. as players when we encounter something suspicious all we can do is report our concerns to the site, up to the site to review it and all the extra data they have behind the scenes and their experts and make their decision.
this is one of the benefits of me playing the arena's though, and playing opponents of all rating levels, over time, you see how legit players at different levels actually play, so when you encounter play that is completely different you realise something may not be right.
