Torsen LSD Diff Install JZS171 Toyota Crown

- In this episode of The Skid Factory we check out the latest upgrades to the JZS171 Crown Wagon and address one of the biggest problems with the platform.
Al sold the car to his mate Brad after the exhaust, intercooler and ecu upgrades and since then Brad has had a bunch more work done at Golebys including a highmount turbo, head studs and gasket. It makes good power but getting it to the ground is now an issue with the factory open centre differential.
The Internet told us that a diff from a Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86 will "Bolt in" so we sourced one from the local Subaru wrecking yard.
The G series diff from the BRZ / 86 is a Torsen Limited Slip Differential and supposedly will bolt into not only the JZS platform but also the XE10 Chassis and possibly others!
The "G series" Crown wheel and pinion can be swapped from vehicles like the MX83 Cressida MA70 supra and some models of the Toyota Hilux to change gear ratios but this isn't a simple swap. If you've done this before let us know in the comments to share some knowledge!

Call it Harry. Used to be standard Crown and welcome at Toyota dealerships in Japan. Now exiled overseas with a few mods, a gobby mouth and likes to party. Still has the Crown badge, but doesn’t do the same duties.
Gold!
this. this is good.
Good name for a locked diff, all that whining 🫣😬🤣
Yo
You win the comment section today good sir!
A whole episode on diffs would be well received.
"a whole episode on diffs would likely get some traction" FTFY
Yep would love to see a full diff install...how to shim / measure gear contact properly etc.
Check out motoiq, old mate goes through a few types of diffs
The hammer sound effects never get old 😂
needs a wheezy air mattress pump sound for the trans jack too. 😁
It's crazy how often you find yourself having to shave something down/make an odd custom spacer once you have a lathe. Makes you wonder how you ever lived without it.
Drill and sandpaper.
Brute force, ignorance & tears
@@capnskiddies That's an accurate summary of most of my 20's
@@wobblysauce and an Angle grinder
well known thing with the bolts being wrong in aus jzx community, just use the 86/brz bolts from the car you got the diff from at the wrecker and bam bolts in no turning down required 🙃🙃🙃
I could definitely smell that oil drain plug 😂
Mmm gear oil 🤤
"say no to single peggers"
Bogan with 1993 open diff VR commodore-"well that sign won't stop me because I can't read"
With the front cradle bolts, if you use the 86/BRZ bolts they will fit and you won't need to lathe the bolts.
Thank you again for the squeaky hammering Woody
Why do I find the squeaky hammer so funny everytime 😂
“How can I miss you, if you don’t go away”
The squeaky hammer always makes me chuckle.
Enjoyed the video, as well as the podcast. Thanks for sharing your experience, and demonstrating once again that success takes hard work and hustle.
Going to listen to the pod soon.
That exhaust manifold is brilliant for a casted manifold.
Always a pleasure to spend some time here.
The intro is soo good 👍 wish Al was my mate and would make me a 'modern' skid master! What a ledge
I’d just like to commend the Skid Factory for having the shortest title sequence on CZcams! Thank you!!
Love how the vid of the exhaust shows the screamer plumbed back but that skid you hear the gate cracking open
Had listen to the podcast - great work keep up the awesome content 😀😀👍🏻
Thanks for the JZ content! Love it
Really enjoyed the Podcast woody 👍
Tomorrow is Australia Day so I assume Woody is going to put a 253 in the wagon. Nice.
With Haltech and turbo 😂
@@Doc_in_the_carpet_truck I would pay so much money to see that :D
That one roasted off tyre on the right rear 😅 Must be a big fat single line somewhere 🤣
My favourite part about my torsen diff is how it kicks the arse end out like my 300hp car has 1000. Great for projecting you into the nearest pole.
I too have a 1JZ with some turbo action going on, and enjoy weird Japanese cars. This is up my alley.
7:50 actually needed to hear that.
My diff has been leaking pretty badly ever since doing an quick axle swap at the track at night.
I bet we missed that little spring not being seating correctly before installing the new axle.
Thanks!
As always, a great vid - LOVED the intro though lads.
I nearly fell off my chair when you announced the HP numbers. Dam impressive boys!
@@ChristopherHallett Everything can be fixed with enough forced induction... provided the "keg" can hold it all in.
They make power easily but it is all above 4500rpm, that's where things can become frustrating with an auto.
Yeah me too, actually considering get one later this year and oh boy that might have been the last trigger I needed to hear
@@theskidfactory quick question in regards to the transmission, where abouts did you get the valve body from im looking to do the same with mine
K24 swap for woody's crown! Altho I suspect they will Barra swap it. That Crown is awesome.
We can K24 swap it and call it the Gelding.
My name suggestion for the car is "Cataract".... Those headlights look like the ones on my Mk1 TT..
400grit to 600grit, a lick of good 2k clear coat... BAM!!!
Looks fn mint!
OM606, OM648, or M57 in Woody's wagon, straight 6 diesel power.
Great video and podcast.
Dunno about Crown.more like a Tiara, always love what you guys get up to 😅
Lmao l, Alan, when you put the turbo air-water system in my 86 people kept telling me I would kill the diff, the gearbox and the clutch - 7 years later all these stock items are still going strong ! (Will replace the clutch at the major service interval though).
For sure you could kill everything from clutch back if you really wanted to right?
Brilliant intro!
I still chuckle every time the squeeky hammer comes out.😁
Bragon obviously! Great work gents, sneaky skid :-)
It's amazing that keford came come from little old nz! Chur
This is my dream daily! 😍 Fast and practical.
Great show again guys call it’s CRAGON
CRown wAGON
Great bit of work guys. And I have a new word - chooch - which is Italian slang for a guy like Al.
Awesome content again boys. Love this thing !! Right up my alley and yeh, woody the 'squeaky toy' noises 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
Brad needs to get his hands on some headlight restorer. Not sure why almost al Toyota end up with milky headlights. I've had the best results with the Turtle Headlight Kit
That intro music needs to go on spotify
Wanna see more of Woody, don’t hide behind the camera mate
Ahh... This car in this exactly spec - my dream
Found it interesting you dropped the rear of the subframe to access the 3 rear diff bolts, I was able to get them off doing the same job to my Crown in the driveway with a spanner and a bit set.
Also for anyone playing along at home planning to do this swap, get the front diff bilts from the 86/BRZ, saves the headache of the Crown ones not fitting the new diff.
Was this at Bad Ideas show in Pine Rivers last Saturday? Great episode guys. I have a custom Torsen LSD in my Gazelle H190. Pretty rare.
Yes it was.
This is my dream car. I was lucky enough to see it on my holiday. Shat myself with excitement 😂😂
Pino Noir for the reddish fancy wagon. Woody's would be interesting with a street tuned 2JZ.
I want to see some Volvo 2.5 5 cylinder turbo go into the Crown, big torque, great noises
We in New Zealand usually call them the crown estate!
I enjoy these jdm videos
2 JZS are my favorite.
Didn't realize that was woody working the slide hammer at the end, thought it was some new Grey bush helping out off in the shadows.
Awesome content as always, hammer sound effects never get old. 👌
Should chuck the turbo forklift motor in the crown 😉
If Woody's Crown has a full chassis then the 4jj1 with matching gearbox and transfer case from a D-Max could be interesting along with a pair of of solid axles out of a suitable 4WD could be very interesting. Then he can get rid of that Pajero. 🙂
I love me a good wagon, and this is one of the gooder ones!
I honestly like the smell of diff oil
Say yes 😆... i had Vr HSV Improved CALIAS 185kw Single spinner. 1 tyre light up awesome 👍
I had a VN V8 Berlina with a single pegger. Awesome if you don't care about forward motion.
It's a slick brick
My back hurt watching those wheels come off at full height, lol 😆
Toy hammer sfx on-point!
Oh, that's a Scion FR-S diff! :D
I thought it was like the is300/gs different diff to the is200 and GT86. But that's good to see and know.
The diffs can all be G series sized but housings vary a lot.
In Woody's Crown, it's got to be something that Honks! If you take the honk, you've got to replace the Honk!
Wow. A pod cast with woodies voice. Screw driver in the ear would be more fun
I love this car😁😁 Al has good taste😁 2j bottom end in its future??
Bloody hell woody, you looking different again. Pick a lane brother haha
Allfast Torque Converters in Perth should have no issues building a converter
Woody needs an old-school 308. I've got one here if he wants it. I need my instrument cluster fixed and a half-metre length of flexible 51mm inner fuel tank filler hose for my old Courier ute. But he'll have to pull the 308 out of my bus.
Woody deffo needs a vr38 in his wagon!
So stick a barra in it instead 😎😎👊
I've had my eyes on the Toyota crown athlete v crown estate being legal in the states for years. SOON.
woody's wagon? twin turbo coyote engine would be my vote. would love to see THAT done
Call it the baby nail - that’s what a Brad is
Woodys car should have a OM606 in it the 2jz of the diesel world
Call it the Red King 👑
hammer noise , made my day. something so small turned my shit day better.
VR FTW ❤
BReds crown
Also make sure the axle seals arent broken mine started to leak grease out the bolts 😭
Would be interesting to see what that 1G-GZE in Woody’s wagon would do with a lil TurboYoda magic, add a turbo to make it twin charged or something crazy like that lol
I agree
I thought Woody was going to out a Barra in there.
1UR-FSE
agreed! would be nice to see some not so mainstream engines get some attention
The 2 crowns ,,, cherry blossom and Crown pie.
woody's crown needs a Hartley VK 56 he even had the t- shirt on. I have a torsen style diff in my commodore and its works better than any mechanical LSD I've driven.
did the new diff ahve a different ratio to give it a bit more pep?
Idk abt the red crown, but right now Woody's is the Em-barra-ssment.
Crimson Chariot, Rice Burgundy, Maroon Sled.
12.39 is that a hint?? Barra the world!
Bosco could be a good name. From memory a plsce in Victoria called TCE specialises in a340 convertors and can tailor make one quick
Simon from Allfast in WA should be able to sort you out with a modified convertor to suit if you give him all the specs etc.
I cannot seem to find a listing for the a340 valve body. Only one I find listed is MV automatics. I have a shift kit to install but wonder if the full valve body exchange is better. Its going to go into the a340 behind the 1uz in my Malibu
Engine for Woody…VQ-35TT for the win!
1:00 Yeah, my 05 V6 4.0l Ford Courier Hi-lift is a 'modern' car. Well, it does have lots of new parts. Does that count as modern?
great stuff guys love the show the Crown (The Jewel ) woodys crown gotta have a toyota in it maybe something really different a 3.0 turbo diesel get the soot soot happening with the whistle
I can, in fact.
Smell that
The Little Red Wagon
I smell a conversion coming. Maybe something from toyota that came na with 8 cylinders, with some boost?
Happy straya day boys
The OEMs have trouble selling wagons in some markets. This is a prime example of what should be offered. 570 plus hp and decent gas mileage if one can keep their foot out of it. The US had the Magnum and the Cadillac CTS sport. The Magnum was nice and roomy. Yet the front had a face only a Mother could love. The CTS Sport was smaller and not as utilitarian. Both suffered from poor gas mileage.
OEMs take a long look at this car.
I drove a 2022 hilux with all the bells and whistles a fair while
I also drive the replacement car for the next vehicle, a 2009 Rav4 VR6
A 2005 crown majesta is still the most modern car I've ever driven, and it was my mum's daily
I miss the old Lexus GS300 with the 2JZ. I had one on my car lot a couple of years ago, but I didn’t want it because it had a million miles on it.
Call it Big red!
Woody you missed a prime opportunity to insert a sound when Al was pumping up the jack 😄
I had to make a fart noise with my mouth to satisfy my needs
Truth be told I actually had noises in there but Al mentioned it was maybe a bit too much
