- Nelson and RuPaul take a day trip to Coney Island along with the Atlanta gang - Larry Tee, Jon Witherspoon, Molli Worthington, Trade and The Fabulous Rosser - in this fun video which ends with their being stopped by the police for possessing marijuana. Fortunately, there were no arrests. Video by Nelson Sullivan

The fact that they didn’t have mobile phones to entertain themselves and he was uncertain of the time of the day. They all soaked in each other’s shared presence, the vibrant and the silent moments, and it was normal not awkward. So engagingly beautiful.
The majority of people came up with no tech. It was much better. We can go back to this if we want to...
Couldn't have said it better myself. I was 2 years old in 1988, but I can still remember the early/mid-90s and how we interacted with each other.
Everyone was always PRESENT and since there were no mobile phones, no one could escape or retreat into some app to avoid each other's gaze/presence.
Truly wonderful, I'm glad I could at least enjoy my childhood and youth without smartphones.
There's just no real depth to most relationships nowadays it seems. People have been zombified by technology.
@@mistersurrealist I’m thirteen and I agree, we barely socialise with anyone on trains anymore, most teens my age like myself surround ourself in a stimulation. We barely go out like back then, it’s only at school where we socialise, sometimes at the canteen table we are just on our phones. Depressing I must say, truly depressing.

@@Twinklez63 no chance those days are over we got to look at the future not the 80''s and 80's werent even that great
Rupaul calling out Nelson's name when the wheel jumped a bit was the sweetest thing ever. They had such a pure friendship.
I thought the same. Too cute.
Some of these comments say Ru got rid of Nelson’s dog when he died, and squatted on his place, idk if that’s true, but that makes me sad, because Nelson loved his dog, and wanted him to be with his friend if anything happened
Sandra Sofia Andrade Vasquez okay good to know another comment said blackout was stranded and Ru was awful 😞 glad it’s not true
@Sandra Sofia Andrade Vasquez I thought RuPaul helped take care of Blackout - at least, taking turns with the others. Is that not true?
Or maybe it’s because he’s playing up to the camera.
These videos are sad and happy at the same time

Who else is still hooked on Nelson videos in 2022 ??!! Meee!
I just love Nelson he was the glue to all these friendships I had a friend that was just like him.
2024!
If i could travel back in time i would go to ny in the 80s for sure
NY in the '70s and '80s! The disco era and Studio 54 (sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll!!), the trashy, grimy Times Square, the people, etc...
NYC late 70´s - 80´s and early 90´s was much more interesting than today, except that AIDS took so many lives.
YES! '77 through til '90!
I think the 70's would be better than the 80's. I was a kid and then a teen in the 1980's. It sorta sucked.
I was born on Oct 7, '80, 80s baby, 90s teen lol, those were the best times! No social media, no smartphones, people really got together and had real conversations, that's when the #1 American car was the Chevy Caprice lol
Nelson's vlogging/filming techniques I would say are decades ahead of the pack...but I believe they're even a step beyond that. More of a timeless art to it. A style that was never out of style, but will always be in style. What a truly beautiful man inside and out.
I feel so fortunate to have lived in Ny in the 80's, it was the best time of my life. I miss my friends that are no longer with us, may they all R.I.P
I feel the same.
Same
Yes but my friends all still alive
Was the best! And didn't realize how great it was till it was over = I'd go back if I could
The 80’s really were a special time to grow up.
I don't know how I discovered this channel but I'm so glad I did, I'm living for all of these videos

the lights, smell of the ocean, the food, the noise it was enchanting to be at Coney Island or the Jersey shore on a summer night
I was 20 in 1988, and though I'm from Scotland, the clothes etc all take me back to that time. So sweet seeing them all hanging out having fun
Thank you for letting me share your trip to Coney Island. I had a good time.
This is one of my favorite videos here. I so miss NYC in the 80s and 90s. Truly Beautiful!!
This makes me homesick for a New York that doesnt exist anymore. Breaking my heart.
It's been gentrified out of all recognition. Oh it's cleaner and safer, but as about as interesting and unpainted drywall.
Watching this makes me so nostalgic. I miss those times so much. I wish I could go back. In a way I am back, thanks to Nelson.
Ru is only 28 in this footage. He’s always smiling, even today. The way Nelson filmed the Zipper was nothing short of high art.
So he’s over 65?

The 80's was the best decade
For anyone interested, the bonus features of Party Monster: The Shockumentary show some extended footage from this day (along with a lot more that you won't see on youtube), including the full ride on the Wonder Wheel; you see everyone sharing a joint at the top of the ride, having a good time when the ride's in motion then going still and quiet whenever they reach the ground level (someone jokes: "does anybody smell marijuana?"). Nelson laments that the joint runs out too quickly and asks someone to light another one, but they only brought the one on the ride.
You can find that longer video in this collection. It's titled Wonder Wheel Ride or something like that.
i cant even believe the exceptional filming for this, its art
The good old days when people talked to eachother.
The best daily vlog ever
cool to see RuPaul not in drag just hanging out.
I always wonder if RuPaul knows these videos are here and if he watches them
I was wondering that as I watched the video. That he could also tweet it out.
***** Me too
***** I always thought Ru could produce a biopic of Nelson.
Ru knows there here but he says he doesn't watch them cuz he lived it which makes sense lol
+Lucas Y Surely RuPaul has his own copy of these videos.
Nelson walking around looking like Al Pacino.
They might not have liked being videod then, but im sure they appreciate and enjoy seeing it now 30 plus years later....I know I do. Thank you Nelson for these great recorded memories of some of the best years and happier times....may you be resting in peace friend
Nelson was way ahead of his time👀hidden gems❤️🙏🏽

What a precious document of a time and place. It makes my heart hurt to see this- i loved NY, my hometown.
You literally recorded valuable history!!! It’s a beautiful, magical thing you’re now able to upload it here 💗
What a disaster it was to loose your friends in a crowded space without cell phones 😄😄
I commented down below something around these lengths but I'd like to say again that what makes Nelson Sullivan's videos so interesting is that he recorded everyday life instead of stupid worthless birthday parties that nobody ever watched again. Nelson's content is absolutely timeless. His way of vlogging was 30 years ahead of his time.
I don't know why I keep clicking on these vids as they pop up. But I am into it.
V. Scott same!
When I seen that Wonder Wheel I instantly thought of The Warriors.
Sameeeee
Watching RuPaul ride the Wonder Wheel is everything!! So adorable!
It sure was a different time back then. The way they talk is so polite I'm gagged
"We're looking for Molly and trade" hahahahahaha OMG if only the 80s knew what those words would become
Nah don't get it
@@harrymonk6 molly as in the drug and trade as in masculine gay black/latino men in the closet.
Trade was already known in gay slang, had been for decades.
Those words meant the same thing in the 80s bro.
@@troy2000me the girl's name was molly and they were calling the dude in the shirt with muscles spray painted on it Trade, because he was trade. MDMA was called X then, it wasnt called molly until the late aughts.
I really enjoy watching his videos, Nelson Sullivan seems like he was such a warm caring person. I really like him alot, what a great group of friends they are.
If Rupaul watches these videos I promise you his life in 1988 was way more fun than now.
You can bet he does watch these videos.
He even said it himself in a video 😏
Your sentence doesn't really make sense, but I get what you're trying to say. 👍
Yeah, he was young and his friends hadn't all died yet.
I've been watching for about 2 years now, damn I miss these people and Nelson, and I never even met them LOL. I guess most of all I probably miss these times, because I also grew up the 70s and 80s. And after all this time I've been watching, I thought I had seen maybe most of Nelson's videos that is on CZcams, but last night I actually clicked on the videos on this channel, and discovered a ton more videos I did not even know existed from the seventies 8 mm. It's kind of like watching a series on TV, can't wait to see what the next video is about. Take care all of you that has been lucky enough as me to have found this great treasure
that guy Trade is fiiine. kinda reminds me of Pietro Boselli
Those leeeegs in those short shorts... dauuumn!
I was wondering what his name was. He was definitely SOOO FINE 💯 ❤
There was a freedom then that america may never see again
Yeah because walking around and filming is illegal now
NY is trash now, soulless..
@Xcuze I'd take that grimy NY any day. Now, a normal person can't even live in NY because everything got so expensive, sanitized and remodeled. There are no scenes or soul.
Except the cops confiscated all their weed
@@ignazs.5816 PLEASE SAY IT LOUDER FOR THOSE WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND! Thank you for verbalizing and summarizing it, as I've struggled to explain it to people. There will always be crime, graffiti, garbage, etc...but the everyday average Joe could live here; work, go to school, pursue their dreams, without fear of where my $2,000 rent is, or can I afford that Uber ride. It was a sense of being OK; survival. The competition in NYC now is fierce, disgusting. So many variables working AGAINST you. Tired of seeing transplants living the "life" here, whereas a native "New Yawker" won't get that good job, or beautiful apartment; although they've earned the same degree. They really don't want us OGs here anymore. They want the "new" NYC; Minnesota, Idaho, Utah, Iowa, Oregon, etc. I'm not salty, though; I've accepted what isn't. But if there is one thing missing here in NYC that can never be replaced is The Soul.
I was arrested in the same area in 1991, because a was talking to some kid that cops knew as a heroin dealer, they checked my pockets found a dime bag of weed that I forgot about, confiscated it and let me go without saying a word about weed)))
gonna put my money on you being white lol
And now its legal lol
Remember going to "look" for your friends when there were no cell phones...
This is a cool series of home videos. I've watched the whole channel over and over again
I think Nelson would be pleased that his proto-vlogs are on here for the world to see, thanks a lot. Do you edit the footage much to shorten it or is this all raw (but for the titles etc) ?? :)
I edited a number of his tapes, including this one, for an exhibition in the early '00s at Gavin Brown's Enterprise, an art gallery in NYC. Some were more difficult than others, but this one required very little to be done. Nelson had a finished video planned in his mind, I think. You can see that he would run ahead so that he could get shots of them walking into frame, etc. Just brilliant. -Steve Lafreniere
@@friendlier You're doing a wonderful thing. Thank you for bringing Nelson's work to us all. Can I ask how you got the videos? Were you a friend of Nelson's?
@@friendlier You're right. i knew Nelson and in a few of them, may he rip.
@@friendlier upload some new vids dude
@@friendlier I noticed that he'd run ahead to get a good shot of his friends, especially when he goes up the staircase onto a deck. Who would think that 30 years later his videos would be as current as never? Most other home videos of that era were stupid birthday parties that nobody watched later, but Nelson Sullivan videoed everyday life. That's what makes him ahead of his time.
Rupaul 😂 …..this was hilarious, thank you Nelson for taking us with you guys
Back then in 84 & 85 when I was there you used a 90 cent token to take the subway times sure have changed!
Ugh!! The music 🎶 !! I miss it so much!! I was only 10 years old but I remember Coney Island. I miss this shit.
Being with people before smartphones! So much more enjoyment and depth of friendships.
God bless nelson soul for recording all these video's in the 1980s. It was so much fun in nyc in those days. I remember seeing all of them out in the clubs. What great times!!!❤
weird how coney island still looks or at least feels like it looks THE EXACT SAME
Nope. Not anymore.
on a chilly but bright Spring day when it's not too crowded, you can find spots serving the same vibes... the people suck more nowadays, but coney island is still coney island
speaking as someone who has been there once, obviously. ;)
@@xtympsHi! Apologize if I came across "terse", but as a kid(I'm 42 years old), born and raised in Brooklyn, Coney Island has changed quite a bit. To give perspective, I remember they days where you could lie UNDER the boardwalk, to shelter you from the hot sun. Also, although I was young, I remember the old Spanish men selling "cerveza" from there coolers on the sand. And the rides? Wow, call them basic, but boy were they fun! Now, to get a wristband from Luna Park is around $50! Not to mention the price of concessions; I bought a slice of plain pizza on the boardwalk and it was about $6 (2019, pre Covid-19). The water doesn't even have any seashells anymore! And now, BBQs are prohibited on the beach and to go "metal" detecting or hosting a party, you need a fucking permit! 😑 The 80's, yes they were rough, but there was a certain freedom, an air of "joie de vivre", if you will, that can never replaced or replicated.
@@stefanmarchione6757 joie de vivre? why yes, i will -- and i'll raise you a **jouissance**
Great video, Nelson, so funny! 😀
Good times. I miss old Coney, old NY, those days. Thx, Nelson, for preserving the memories for us.
You can almost hear “Ain’t no half steppin’” by Big Daddy Kane. That song reminds me of ‘88.
The more of Nelson’s vlogs I watch...the more I fall inlove with Trade ❤️🥰😍
Same, trade is so hot.
I think this is his top 5 best videos. Its so interesting.
I remember all this stuff growing up as a kid in NYC. 🌺🌸 What nostalgia looking back on a glimpse of the past.
When Nelson was filming this I would of been 22 years old & a group of us would of been doing the same in the 80’s & 90’s & we were called at the time “rent a crowd” coz we always attracted the weirdos wherever we went to our regular night club, we had soooo much fun in those days missed those days heaps!!!
This is very interesting to watch.
Trade was so handsome and confident about the man he was made to be. Thank you Nelson.
Taking the same walks that myself and friends did together many times just a few years later. I laughed out loud when I saw them smoking a joint on the Wonder Wheel because that’s one of the reasons to ride it! Heartbreaking and wonderful all in one swoop.
That ferris wheel was sketch. It looked like it was gonna fall apart any second, lmao.
I wish I had a friend like Nelson. It also would of been fun to hangout with Rupaul.
3:10-3:11 Larry Tee pointing to Trade- "Nature at It's Finest" 💯%!
I truly love this!!
Rest In Peace Nelson Sullivan 💛
Hi Steve! How did u get a hold of all Nelsons videos? This is all so special and amazing! Thank you for sharing his life with all of us it's truly one of a kind.
Damn. The memories. This makes me wanna cry.
Omg the memories.
The Himalaya was my favorite ride
Oh my GOSH! Yessss that was my ISH! And the Pirate Ship!
Does anyone else want a reaction video of Rupaul watching these videos? Or just me ❤️
I literally just said that while watching this!!❤
Yes!!!!!
I’d love to hear the stories Ru has to tell about this time
Wait, this is like a really good idea!
He could probably tell other things that happened behind the scenes, or that day when Nelson wasn't filming. She could narrate and add to it...
That would be absolutely brilliant.
hhahhaha this is one my fav 😂 ru paul on the wheel had me dying !
Warriors come out to play-i-ay
That's The Way Love Is by Ten City is playing at 12:16. Werk!
I love watching these.....😍
Crazy all these years later and we still have fun going to fairs to ride the same type of rides.
The way Lahoma asks Larry Tee what he has had to eat realizing there’s a possibility of wearing it before the ride is over with! Also the look that was given to Nelson when he was filming him while he was getting sick! 😂☺️😊
comey island looked so much more lit with more rides back then wow
Does anybody think that Seth MacFarlane used Nelson for his character Bruce, the similarities are uncanny, and the voice too
He did
Whenever I see the Wonder Wheel all I can do is think about The Warriors.
Warriors..... Come out and Playyyyayyyyyee
This feels like the first 15 minutes of a slasher movie where all the characters are introduced and you get to know them before they're picked off one by one. They even lose a few of their friends. Theres pot smoking. C'mon this would be perfect. Nelson of course would be the final girl, er guy.
How cool would it be to have a slasher be filmed in the 80s at Coney Island.
So glad this video was made. This is how I remember coney island as a kid going with my parents. Finally i see the orange and white Rollercoaster in this video. Started to think my memory was imaginary that it existed. Can anyone tell me what this coasters name was?
I am glad this randomly appeared on my recommended
it's funny when nelson talks about people being annoyed by him constantly filmimg them, yet now this footage is priceless. funny how perspective changes over time. also funny how southern nelson gets at the end of the video.
also, The Zipper is an abomination of a ride.
Bring back a lots of memories when we use to hang out in Coney island
I’m always amazed at how little they swear. Today everyone has a potty mouth! Unless they just didn’t want to be on camera swearing.
This is so amazing
Rupaul is such a main character

Love his videos
Nelson looked soooo much like Al Pacino in his younger years. Even more handsome
a very handsome man indeed
I'd have luv'd ti have been around back then, I'm pretty sure I'd b just the rite amount of kooky/outthere to b part of their crowd/group!!! Altho seemingly quite chaotic it was really sweet to see such a ragtag bunch of sum mite say misfits an oddballs, showin real family viewing, u could really tell that they all loved one another truly, an that they were tru friendships, altho not anywhere near as fabulous or awesome, I too rely heavily on my friends as my family, we're quite a similar bunch of "ragtag misfits an oddballs" an I couldn't nor wouldn't ask not want for anythin more! I'm literally obsessed with this channel an all its subjects since I literally stumbled across a vid a cppl days ago an haven't looked back since!!!
I wonder if Nelson has ever been with this group to Six Flags Great Adventire. It'd be funny to see him and friends riding those radical coasters.
Does anyone know what happened to Trade? I haven't seen or heard anything about him in the years since these videos like I have of others within the scene.
Someone said he is selling real estate in Georgia (I think?)
I love that Trade is singing music from Evita on the train home. Wonder what became of him. Everyone else is pretty much accounted for.
Phill Greenland on one of these posted videos of Nelson’s, Trades sister answered someone asking about him and she gave his real name and there was some more recent video of him playing with one of his little nephews in the yard. He looked so different (as we all do now...)
I must track the comment down now. Would love to see how he turned out. I also wonder if Nelson would still be apart of Rupauls life and apart of his camera crew if he were alive today. 😢
Damn @9:47 for a sec I thought that was an 00s rap song, wow 1988...
That caught me too. Would love to know what it is...
