Surely MMA has to be up there in the hardest sport debate? You have to be competent in judo, bjj, boxing, kickboxing, wrestling etc. while training incredibly hard for a match every 3-6 months. Not to mention the punishment you go through in terms of taking shots, kicks, having your limbs cranked and so on... Hardest in my book.

Ice hockey has to rate as the hardest sport, the skills required are insane and so specific
I played in college, was a goalie so a different skill set, but still. So many different aspects you have to train for. Physically and technically

Hitting a baseball in my opinion is the most difficult aspect of a sport. In a sport where succeeding 30% of the time consistently year after year can get you into the hall of a fame says a lot.
The fact that there is professional players that hit the ball less than 20% of the time is crazy to think, those guys played the sport to the highest degree and look terrible I could never imagine some random person getting a hit off a major leaguer
I've always thought that Snooker is the hardest sport going. A ridiculous amount of precision is needed. Watching Snooker absolutely baffles me. The talent level of professionals is remarkable
Completely agree. I play it myself (not amazing at it like) but I know it’s super tricky in the mind as well, backing yourself to pot the ball psychologically and knowing what the best shot to play is just as hard as actually potting the balls and getting position on the next ball 😂
Cricket is so much more technically difficult than golf, as you have to be able to at least bat and field. You also have to be able to bowl, which requires the ability to vary your deliveries based on each batsman and either make it turn, swing in the air or go incredibly fast. Furthermore, batting requires the ability to react extremely quickly to fast bowling and be able to predict what the bowler is going to do next and be able to hit it through a gap to score the most amount of runs possible. And if that wasn't enough you need to be able field, which requires the ability to be able to react to a ball being smashed at you, throw the ball and be able to sprint and run for at least an hour and a half. If you are a wicket keeper you need to be able to react the the ball coming past the batsman and catch it everytime, just in case it takes a knick and if you are standing up (closer to the batsman) then you need to be able to react extremely quickly. Moreover you need to be able to concentrate for insane amounts of time, because even if you haven't touched the ball in 4 hours the next one might come to you and it be a match winning catch. In conclusion cricket is more physically, mentally and technically demanding than golf.

Ice Hockey is up there. The ability of having all the pads and protective gear on. Only being able to use a stick to control the puck and keeping your balance while on ice. Loving SBSD Advent.

I would maybe say ice hockey as you have to do 2 skills at once and you need physical strength to it’s also difficult to practice as you need many facilities

On the issue of what to do instead of drawing lots to determine who goes through, I'd say scrap the yellow card tie-breaker, if the teams aren't playing each other on the final matchday then they should go to the round of 16 game and do a penalty shootout there. It's not the best idea from a sporting standpoint, and is probably unnecessarily cruel, but I feel like that would make the best television. The only issue here would be if the two teams are determining a tie-breaker for seeding rather than who will advance, as then they would have different round-of-16 opponents in different locations
On the point of the coin flip and travel to meet for a shootout, the group stages tend to be in close proximity so all 4 teams in that group can be close to the relevant stadiums

I think by either of the definitions given Gymnastics is going to rank near if not at the top, it is both incredibly physically and mentally challenging.

I would say Biathlon is a good shout. It combines the sort of pressured, high accuracy situation of a golf swing when shooting with a very physically demanding aspect. Also by the time they are shooting, they already skiied miles at like 40 km/h.

Formula 1 is the hardest sport. Imagine driving around Singapore in 40 degree heat with all that G force whilst attacking and defending, for 2 hours straight.

I don't even play it but I feel like ice hockey would be really difficult. Skating confidently is a skill on its own nevermind keeping control of the puck and keeping it away from opponents
I think boxing’s the hardest sport but I’m biased and your point about golf and the psychology was actually really interesting
I would say mma because of the sheer amount of disciplines you have to learn along with the physical + mental strain of going into a war with someone

In the same vein as golf, most competitive climbing is really hard in the same way. Having only 4 minutes to climb a hard boulder. All of the climbers could do it easily but turning on the flow state within 4 minutes to send it something else

IMO Rally is the most difficult as you only visit the place once a year and each stage is different and the road changes as more people drive the stage

Andy you have to make a podcast it’s actually amazing that you have a degree in phycology and I want to know what other things you might have in mind!
Most difficult sporting event has to be the decathlon but you could argue it’s comprised of multiple different sports. I would probably then say baseball or golf for pure skill and for physical MMA.
Interesting sport to look at then would be Cricket - It involves at least some (to a massive amount depending on how long you field/bat for) physical exertion, plus bowlers have the same job as most golfers, with each ball being a new thing, and batsmen although it is reactive, have to premeditate every ball etc.

Hardest sport is probably any type of combat sport because it requires skill in forms of accuracy, technique and power
F1 can also be debated as the hardest sport and that’s self explanatory
Tennis is up there with the hardest sports imo, got to be able to move quickly and get decent power / receive shots at over 100mph without flinching
Gaelic football or hurling both incredibly hard sports to play in terms of physical pain

I’d say up there with golf would be snooker yes golf you have to hit it further and think about the weather etc but snooker you have to think 4/5 steps ahead make sure it bounces correctly and take into consideration that your opponent can alter the game so id say snooker and golf are up there for technically/psychologically difficult sports

I’d say darts is one of the hardest sports. Not only do you need perfect aim every throw but you also need the precise maths to work out what your on and to also always remember what you need to finish on so quickly
Take all you said about golf and add it to snooker.. but add the additional skill gap, and the randomness of hitting a ball in to a ball, whilst trying to pot it

In golf you can be 90 and hitting a golf ball. MMA is much harder considering you have to account and think about everything.

I would say the hardest sport would be hockey (in team sports) compared to like running an iron man race! In Hockey, you have to control your skating, have incredible cardio while breathing the cold ice , you also have to look up while skating in order to see what's happening on the rink while controling your puck and try to not get hit! At least, in montreal where I'm from😂

The hardest sport to me is definitely snooker, similarly to golf there's no real 'flow state', it's more like chess where everything is calculated.
For the hardest sport debate, Baseball is brutal.
You have a tenth of a second to decide whether or not you are going to swing.
The issue is, a really good pitcher can make a pitch look like a completely different.
Soccer (as we say in the US) is incredibly difficult as well.
