This is a short video of many showing you how to remove the gas tank from a volkswagen classic beetle. Make sure you empty the gas tank first as the gas tank weighs 14 pounds by itself and filled with gas could weight an additional 86 pounds. If you want to empty it later or do not need to empty it, at the bottom of the tank is the main outlet hose, you can insert a large screw and tighten until gas does not leak out of the hose.
Once you have removed the gas tank, you can remove the main inlet hose and the gas cap will not be needed.
