    Comment any “tips & tricks” for record collecting & care you may have!✨
    Also, want to address my shelf since I figured this may be brought up but I did do research prior to make sure it could support the weight of the records. I also know fellow collectors who use the same shelving & I believe Anthony Fantano uses ikea shelves as well.
    Technically with it being horizontal I end up with 4 stronger shelves in the bottom row versus if it was vertical I’d only have 2 at the very bottom. The sides are thicker & stronger than the inner shelves regardless of which way you “display” it.
    IKEA shelving as a whole is a lot sturdier than the cheap target & Walmart cubicals in which the shelves are typically a very thin piece of plywood that warp quickly. The IKEA ones are a lot thicker & can hold more weight. 💞

    Hi Olivia, the video is very good and you are a very sweet person.
    I have some advice for you - if you will allow me.
    1) Use a spirit level to bring the turntable exactly perpendicular to the ground (on both sides of the turntable). If it is not already set, you need to look at the 4 brackets if they can be adjusted to make the leveling. If not, you can put small coins anywhere needed to show 0 level in the spirit level. If you can not do it alone, ask for help. This is very important to have perfect results in the sound, but also not to cause damage to the discs by the needle.
    2) The plastics you use for protection look bad when all the records are in place. I personally cut what protrudes above the record so nothing looks bad in my record store. Find a wood veneer from old furniture to support the cut, a 40-50cm metal ruler and a cutter. Calculate how much the plastic cover protrudes and remove it (be careful that the record is not inside when you cut). I wish you a huge collection that will fill your whole life.

    Your record player that says 33 speed will be 33 1/3. It’s just they don’t always write that. So all your records will be playing at the right speed:)

    • @OliviaRena
      @OliviaRena  Před 3 lety +2

      I don’t have 3 speed options, I only have two. My button can only lock on the two it shows. (Push it in for 45rpm, push it out for 33rpm) So if it plays 33 1/3 on the 33 setting then it doesn’t play 33 at all.

    • @rowenamiller1412
      @rowenamiller1412 Před 3 lety +3

      Thanks so much for getting back to me. Yes, I guess your device says 33 or 45 but the 33 means 33 1/3. It’s probably labelled that as many are. All the records made are pressed for 33 1/3 speed. There is no 33 only option. I think in your video you are concerned about something you needn’t be.

    Hi Olivia, after watching I would like to add my advice to enhance your listening pleasure. Nice stereo but I would suggest you upgrade the speakers into at least bigger bookshelf ones.Reason being is they are too small to emit good sound and 4 ohms. Best speakers for stereos are 8 ohms even if the stereo takes 4 as it solves overheating. I do own a pair of tower JBL and they sound amazing. I myself am a vintage collector and while my stereos are pioneer and nikko from the late 70s and early 80s, really believe that its hard to beat technics esprcially in the cd and turntable department. As for turntable i have a Sanyo and Hitachi which uses an audiotechnica stylus.

  • @MayhemmiGunn
    @MayhemmiGunn Před 3 lety +1

    I buy all my inner sleeves from either Spincare or MoFi. I don't know about MoFi, but Spincare offers rounded ('Japanese') poly sleeves, which I highly recommend for 7 and 10 inch. For 12" I recommend the MoFi Master Sleeve or the Spincare Audiophile inner sleeves (they're essentially the same).
    Also, for those with a Hifi stereo system, a graphic equalizer is an absolute must! I can't begin to describe how much it will improve your sound. I've never heard an equalizer that didn't improve the sound drastically, so just about any old EQ will do. They shouldn't be hard to come by, and they're worth every single penny. Essential stuff, take my word for it.

  • @kookamunga2458

    Your setup is very smart . You have your turntable far enough away from your other components and especially your receiver. This means that things won't overheat as easily. It also means your cartridge won't be affected by the transformer in the receiver Amp. If turntable is too close you might get a humming noise but you already know that .

    Hey Olivia! we have the same turntable (albeit different colours). I've paired mine with a brand new pair of Edifier active speakers. The turntable has a preamp built in and the Edifier active speakers have a built in amplifier, so I'm able to just plug in the speakers and play my music. It is an absolutely brilliant minimal setup for anyone who doesn't like separate components. :) It's a great little turntable if you're starting out too. I was gifted an Akai suitcase by my girlfriend at the time which started me off nicely, but when we broke up, I replaced it with the ATLP60 and I've never looked back :)
    I thought I would share some of my own Tips and Tricks (from personal experience)
    1. DON'T BUY PVC OUTER SLEEVES. I learned the hard way. a chemical reaction occurs over time and will leave a horrific residue on the record surface which isn't removeable and is audible on playback. I'm no expert, but one of my Jack Savoretti records was nearly ruined because I stored it in a PVC sleeve. Thankfully I heard they were awful and quickly replaced them with similar ones to the ones seen here :)
    2. It's a good idea to replace your inner sleeves with anti-static ones. Many of the paper inners disintegrate over time and can leave residue/paper shavings on the vinyl surface. While this can be cleaned, the paper will scratch your records when you remove/replace them in the sleeve. I almost lost a super rare Star Wars Episode III record because the inner sleeve was slowly disintegrating all over the vinyl! They can be pretty pricy but here in the UK I can recommend the brand SpinCare.
    I was gifted a pack of 100 of those sleeves for Christmas, and they turned out to be absolutely brilliant. I believe you can get a pack of 100 on amazon for £35 approx (but I think the Spincare website may have them slightly cheaper.). Spincare also have a test product set for £3 which gives you one of every outer and inner sleeve product they do for every size of record (7",10" and 12") so you can decide which of their products work for you. I've ordered one so I will update once it has arrived if you like?
    I know a lot of people recommend the Mofi inner sleeves, however they are super pricy for what they are (in the UK at least! This may differ overseas). Spincare is just one of many brands that have their own version, but for a much more affordable pricetag. What I will say is if you want your vinyl to stay pristine and playable for years to come, definitely replace the inner sleeves. It's an investment, and you may find it easier to do it over time for your entire collection when you can afford to, but I highly recommend doing this to prolong your collection, further :)
    3. I can recommend a spin-cleaner for easy cleaning of multiple records at once. I got the Big Fudge Record Friend and it comes with everything you need, the spin cleaner, a drying rack, a towel, a microfibre cloth and two bottles of cleaning solution. you just pour water in them and pop your records in, and turn them clockwise three times and anti-clockwise three times, then take them out of the cleaner with the provided cloth and towel the excess off, and place it on the included drying rack and that's it. I spent 3 days cleaning and re-sleeving 200 records and it was very straightforward. highly recommended. Again lots of brands do the same kind of thing.
    4. I would advise against keeping original shrink wrap on your LPs. Over time they can stick to the sleeve and can damage the artwork if you try to remove it afterwards. I've only ever had that happen to me once but this was a record that was kept in the shrink wrap it came in in the 80s, they cut open the side to access the records. when I tried to remove this, it ripped strips off of the back of the gatefold and left white streaks on the back, which wasn't ideal. But I may just be a little unlucky, I guess haha :)
    This is a lovely, very informative video, especially for people just starting out with vinyl collections! thank you for this. :D

    I have had a turntable that played LP's the way the waster was cut i.e the MARANTZ TT143 where the tonearm is part of the lid and would only play with the lid down and was part of a stacking system where there were sockets on the top and bottom of the amplifier that mated up with the cassette deck and the tuner that mounted on top which the turntable sat on and connected to the cassette deck and also had a control ribbon cable which would let the cassette deck control the turntable, But I reckon that the REVOX B795 would be the be all and end all of record players but there is also a MARANTZ TT520 which is also worth looking at, but if you don't want any needles anywhere near your LPs but still want to listen to them the the Japanese made ELP Laser turntable is the way to go which uses 5 lasers to play the LP i.e 2 to track the lands of the grooves 2 to read the music out of the grooves and 1 to find the thickness of the LP and is drawer loading, just one sticking point it costs $16,000 Dollars US.

    Pro tip: get your picture discs out of those PVC sleeves if you intend on listening to them. If you don't intend on listening to them, go ahead and drill a few holes in them and tack them to the wall, because it will be less unsightly than what offgassing from PVC will make them look like.

    Keeping the vinyl in the original inner sleeves is sketchy the longer you intend to keep them. Paper causes dust, so even inner plastic-lined paper sleeves will shed over time. Of course, if you deep clean the record, maybe that's not such a big deal. It's enough of a worry for me that I switch most of them out.
