  • Boris Berezovsky plays all 12 of Liszt's Transcendental Etudes in one sitting. Truly heroic. He deserves an Olympic medal.
    "Roque d'Antheron 2002 - Boris Berezovsky
In 2002, the world acclaimed Roque d'Anthéron Piano Festival which takes place in Provence every summer presented a number of young pianists (in addition to well-established names), whose performances were so remarkable that they were worthy of being recorded for posterity. This superb performance by Boris Berezovsky, was filmed in a studio specially conceived in the grounds of the castle to permit sound recording of CD quality and TV filming of the highest standard. - Franz Liszt (1811--1886): 12 Études d'exécution transcendante, S 139 Transcendental Studies: No. 1 Preludio; No. 2 in A minor; No. 3 Paysage; No. 4 Mazeppa; No. 5 Feux follets; No. 6 Vision; No. 7 Eroica; No. 8 Wilde Jagd; No. 9 Ricordanza; No. 10 in F minor "Appassionata"; No. 11 Harmonies du soir; No. 12 Chasse-neige

the most perfect combination of stupendous virtuosity and musicality - the latter so often seems to get lost when the demonstration of virtuosity supersedes the musical contents

I was just listening to Berezovsky do these in Moscow (2009). The camera was so bad that by Ricordanza I had had enough. So I came over here and the camera work is even worse. We should have a rule-book about what cameras can and can't show. This perf. is more spontaneous than that of Moscow.

I was gonna complain of the very lousy camera job too.Don't know why we have to see the camera moving all the time. Why can't it stay still? Why focus on the artist's one eye, his little finger, sweat on his nose and face, his rather hairy arm --when we want to see his hands, arms and maybe face more?? 😢😢😢
      Really sad! 😢😮😢😢😢

I really liked his Mazeppa but I noticed that for the thirds in the beginning he seems to take the first two thirds in the left hand and then the next four thirds in the right hand. In the score, Liszt, I think, wrote the last two thirds in the left hand meaning that you have to cross the hands. I'm going to try it the way he did it in the video to see if it makes a difference as this piece is unbelievably difficult lol
