Weapon X Supercharger Lid Review (C7 Z06) Does it Make the Blower Whine?

  • In this short video, I review the Weapon X Supercharger Lid on my 2015 Corvette C7 Z06. I purchased this lid in hopes it would make the stock supercharger whine much much louder.
Because I have a 2015 Z06, I needed to purchase the updated 2017+ hood liner to clear the new taller Weapon X Supercharger Lid. This was about $150 from my local Chevrolet dealership.
The quoted benefits of the Weapon X Supercharger Lid are better cooling, more horsepower and INCREASED whine.
After installing this lid and driving the car for a week, I have to say I am not that impressed. Especially for the hefty $1,000 price tag. I have to admit, if I am standing outside the vehicle and someone revs the engine, I can hear the whine. Although I was sort of under the assumption that I would be able to hear the increased blower whine from inside the vehicle while driving. However, I cannot.
Driving the car aggressively down the street, you can slightly hear the whine but it is no where near is loud as I thought it would be.
The other modifications I have done to the car is a K&N cold air intake, Mamo V2 ported 87mm throttle body and Borla X-Pipe.
I reached out to Weapon X Motorsports and they said they have received nothing but positive feedback about the increased blower whine from other Z06 customers. I asked for some comparison videos from other Z06 Corvettes to hear the difference between their cars and mine however, I have not heard a response from them.
If I had to purchase it over again, I probably would not. It is sort of my fault too though. I should have requested video examples of the lid on a C7 Z06 before ordering.

In my experience smaller supercharges with higher speeds whine more. I've played with TVS1320 superchargers on the Audi platform and they whine much louder than the Hellcat or Z06/ZR1/GT500 chargers. Polishing them makes no difference, porting them or increasing the throttle body will make them deeper. Changing the pulley to overdrive them will shift the pitch up, and increase the volume a bit. The intake also makes a huge difference. Rubber/Silicone intakes dampen and remove the higher pitches, which sounds muted. Metal intakes sound OK if they are thick, with a lot of volume, but if they are thin they add some clangy bad frequencies. Carbon fiber intakes seem to yield the highest volume that sounds good, and that seems almost universal, it is thin but does not resonate like the metal ones do, so it does not vibrate but also does not dampen the whine like silicone does.
If you really like hearing engine noise inside the car, taking a page out of the BMW scene is to modify your HVAC filter. It almost always pulls air from just below the windshield, and you can modify it to allow sound into the cabin through the air conditioning vents. Of course you still have to retain a filter, but this method has worked really well for a lot of people looking to hear more engine noise without making anything louder or resorting to electronic fakery.
Your car sounds and looks great.

So many of the NX Lid owners have made videos and bloat the forums saying how much louder the whine is,
Yet compared to the Weapon X I hardly see a difference in Lid design on the outside or inside. So Is it the material? They're both billet Aluminum, so maybe thickness?
Either way I haven't heard my whine since I got Headers! Seriously, I can't even hear it from in the cabin anymore. Even at low RPM, my Longtubes just drown any supercharger noise out.
Thanks for the video though, definitely gave me some food for thought. I did a Corsa CAI, Ported Throttle Body, and barely hear anything over stock, so I feel the struggle to wanting whine!

    • @JMGENTERPRISES
      @JMGENTERPRISES  Před 3 lety +1

Yeah, I am unsure about the NX lid compared to the Weapon X. I have emailed Weapon X several times as well as tried to get them to respond on Instagram and Reddit. However, nobody has responded. Pretty shitty customer service in my opinion. I was shown lots of videos with their lid on LT1 Camaros which made me think that would be how it would sound on my C7Z but it does NOT sound anywhere close to the same.
I can imagine you can't hear any whine with headers! I bet your ride sounds mean though! Did you notice any performance gain with adding headers? I have heard mixed reviews on adding headers to C7Z's.

Finally the ZR1 development went with taller hood. These guys likely never got into FI in the first place.

The issue is the corvette does not have a port that routs intake noise to the cabin, the Camaro has a tube that plugs into the intake and routs to the cabin, there is also a delete option for this too. With the stock LT4 blower my guess is you’d have to flat out remove some of the sound deadening material between the engine bay and cabin, or get a aftermarket blower…not to mention the rear trunk is open to the corvette cabin which pulls more rear exhaust noise into the cabin which can block out the super charger wine
