- The Utah Merlin Meet 2019 has come and gone, what an experience! Despite unfavorable winds and biting cold, there was quite the turnout as the annual matchup of Merlins versus Starlings went down. I wasn't able to be there for all of it, but I did manage to grab a few shots of Austin Gunther and his two passage Merlins, which I've compiled into this short film.
If you haven't been, I highly recommend making it out to witness the Utah Merlin Meet for yourself... www.merlinmeet.com

It’s a falcon
@Taylor Osborne hawking, sometimes called gamehawking, is the practice of hunting with any conditioned falconry bird - a paraphrasing of the falconry Wikipedia
MANY THANKS.
AAA Top Shelf #1 Thanks for sharing this amazing lightweight p4p amazing predator , I have seen them do 180/360 degree circles in a stairwell and catch a moth or mosquito . then bolt out of a stairwell like a swallow and hit the air up so far so quick and then dive down at great speeds 50 mph or more
Nicely does your videos are getting smoother =)

Can a female merlin get airborne with a starling, because i saw a merlin struggling with something bigger than a sparrow in midair but finally flew off with it

Merlins are not native to Americas, am I wrong?
They are native to North and South America
Hi I have a mail merlin his name is storm
I'm curious why you're giving a tidbit right after striking the hood. I'm not saying it's wrong, but my gut instinct would be that it would potentially lead to food aggression down the line.
Is the idea to build a positive association with hooding? Maybe weight management -smallish longwing and all?
Jason. I am in no way trying to speak for the falconer in the video. I can only reply based off my own experiences flying passage Merlin’s. There is no better way to make friends with or to keep a Merlin’s attention than by tidbiting them. My Merlin’s have all come to expect this after the hood is removed before flying and after(yes, even with the hood on. And no, I have not seen any negative behaviors from allowing merlins to do so) Cheers.

Utah Merlin. I'm so stupid. I studied predatory birds in college which meant going to a research library. I was in Utah, but my world was so far away from really understanding predatory birds. I didn't know how to seek out local falconers. That's a missed path in life I could have taken.
It's never too late to start if you're genuinely interested. There aren't many falconers in the US, but they're spread all over the country.
