Actually the Queen didn't refuse Princess Margaret permission to marry, she said she could marry him, but would lose her positon in the line to the throne, and would have to give up her HRH. Princess Margaret wouldn't give it up.

The Queen is mourned across the globe because she is the last world leader who lived and served during WW II. She had an appreciation to a degree of what war meant; she was protected from the worst of war in Windsor Castle. She demonstrated what a work ethic entailed and credited a strong belief in God as her guide. Her marriage to Prince Philip despite ups/downs also reflected the commitment to making a vow. These traits are not popular or common anymore, but they are respected. She was a member of the GREATEST GENERATION that is quickly diminishing.

I am an American born post WWII 1946, dad came home from the Navy and they had me. They couldn’t get diapers, baby clothes or baby bottles. My dad went to get a suit to get married in and there was only one on the rack. It was a woolen tweed black and white. My grandmother worked at a department store and she bought a bolt of white flannel and they cut it up and made diapers for me out of that. I can’t imagine how much suffering they went through and that is why they were called The Greatest Generation. They made great sacrifices and they were very brave and strong. I admired the Queen very much. She worked right up till the bitter end. How many other people worked as long as she did. I don’t think there will ever be another one like her. Don’t pay attention to the New York Times, most of us normal people don’t read it. Thousands of white men died in a National war to abolish slavery. It was the Southern Plantation owners who used them as free labor to pick the cotton. My people where half Irish and half English so some of my ancestors suffered for being Irish and that is why they immigrated to America to get away from the prejudices. They then settled in the area of Boston the North and were in the Northern army. How many people of color ever want to leave either country to go back to living in Africa? My Irish ancestors found signs where the Irish weren’t allowed to get hired for a job in America so my people were held in contempt in both countries. People have been mean and ugly towards their fellow man for generations. Hopefully most people have a better life now than in the past.

I think this is a terrific assessment by Simon of the Queen’s reign and the values that were instilled in us. I was born in the ‘50’s and his description of attitudes during that time is spot on. He didn’t mention that most of us were not encouraged to boast about our achievements or display our emotions in public. It was considered self indulgent. We were, however, encouraged to help those less fortunate and contribute towards society and communities and always be respectful towards one another whatever our differences.

I wish everyone would watch this interview as it’s so accurate, balanced, displays English self-awareness and accountability for past sins while being entirely contextual. “The Past is a foreign country.” That’s a great line. I’m tired of people accusing the Queen for Democratic decisions of parliamentarians, many of which were made domestically in the colonies. Multi generational Canadians blaming the Queen for their own parents and grandparents treatment of our Indigenous peoples is the height of ignorance and finger pointing.

The only point I disagree with in the debate concerns the comments on how appalling it is for the French to ban signs of one's religion when working for the state according to the 1905 law relative to the separation of religion and the state. @@jackiebenjamin8772 - an example of their lies: she said they got married three days before the 'spectacle', just the two of them and the Archbishop of Canterbury. Not true. In fact the Archbishop was forced to refute the lie in public. A Google search will uncover more - I believe there were 17 lies in the Oprah interview which were proved to be so.

I remember knowing when Prince Charlrs said 'Whatever love is' that he did not love Diana They should not have married, he was and is in love with Camilla and should have married her then. However, Diana was an aristocrat, a beautiful naive teenager and 'suitable' at the time. We are fortunate that William is the person that he is and that he (eventually) chose Catherine, a beautiful , extremely sensible, down to earth and strong personality as his wife.

There are many young people who are returning society to the Queen's values as the opposite has become so starkly dispicable.

The queen is much respected and admired by people around the world. She is a remarkable woman and is one of a kind. She is a hard act to follow. Meantime, the despicable Markle is all about herself. She has no respect for British culture and traditions let alone the monarchy. She has no business in the RF and not a fit. Harry made a very poor choice.

I don't believe I am writing this, but after watching a documentary on Prince Harry I come to the conclusion that he found his match in the clingy and dominating Ms. Markle. Although, I am very uneasy but not surprised that he trashes his family. Were would he be without them and their money. Too bad, perhaps, it is not too late for him to reflect. Ms. Markle is really insignificant. Her claim to fame is that he married her.

The queen was there for us through covid, she isolated with us, she supported us, she kept us together, kept us going, she learned to use the Internet to communicate with us, she took her vaccines, she still done her duties, and she made us laugh, a will miss her on Xmas day and I hope king Charles will give us a video on her dogs, horses and get spoiled from santa. ❤️❤️❤️

Giving the Queen standing novation; she stood as a Titanic Moral exemplary for the good of all mankind in doing a supreme service call for God. She will be loved.
