  • In 1977, Stan Lee (1922-2018) explains how Spider-Man's problems make him a more relatable and popular superhero.
Here's a clip from a 1977 appearance on CBC's 90 Minutes Live, in which Stan Lee talks about Spider-Man and how he is a character who people can relate to - moreso than the perfect heroes of the past.

@The Riddler literally no. Spidey was only thought of as a joke in the beginning when stan's boss didnt like the idea of spiderman because people dont like spiders or teenagers cant be superheroes but only sidekicks. But when spidey appeared in amazing fantasy 15 people loved him and they wanted more. Spidey has always been popular not just because of the movies but because he is singlehandedly the most relatable superhero on the planet to many many people.

We get the peter parker / spiderman that no one knows who he is. He can go back to struggling with being a super hero / being a normal young adult with a job and bills. I think it will make the relationship between him and mary jane even better with him not wanting to repeat what he did in the first 3 movies. I understand why some many want to be "FAMOUS"! Once you're in the "public consciousness", your life changes forever, no longer a forgotten nobody, everything you do, "good" or "bad" is recorded for posterity! Fame gives anyone the ability to have a loud voice in the world, so loud you can never be ignored again, because NOW you matter!
As for me, I do not seek fame, nor do I seek "GODhood", it's too overwhelming. Besides, my anonymity is far too important for my own sanity (what little is left, LOL)!

That is shocking, and beautiful. Kids today know who Stan Lee is. That memory for some reason will get passed on to their kids due to the characters he helped create. Lady Gaga will be forgotten, most kids don't know who Madonna (singer) was/is.

Tony Stark has some similarities to Bruce Wayne, like many protagonists of the time, but he is modeled seemingly closer to Clark Gable and Errol Flynn. He was specifically a defense contractor/inventor.
Playboy/millionaire, you could argue, but was certainly not the first playboy millionaire character, those characters are littered through fiction.
Superman is the influence of many characters, even Sentry. But Sentry created by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee.
Though, Superman himself is influenced by many other heroes. He was not the first to fly, have super-strength, have a secret identity, costume, cape, X-ray/heat vision, and etc. Almost all of his powers came from other characters.

And Joe Simon, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, John Romita, Walt Simonson, Jim Shooter, Marv Wolfman, and so many more that get uncredited in the massive legacy of the great Stan Lee. Stan was amazing but he didn't do it all himself, too many people believe that when in reality, Stan was responsible for some of Marvel's greatest heroes, but not every single one. There's respecting someone and then there's worshipping them and I feel like too many people tend to worship him instead of giving him a great amount of respect.

Try interviewing 27 Marvel employees. Stan loved the limelight, was good as a promoter and looked better than Kirby or Ditko in front of the camera. Promoting himself promoted Marvel.
On the other hand, he rarely offered up praise to his team, he paid them like they were free-lancers and was a lazy writer when Marvel was beginning to boom, using the Marvel Method.

@@alanb8884 Stan was an amazing person and a great promoter as you said, but if you ask a casual moviegoer who Steve Ditko is, they'll have no idea who you're talking about. If you ask them who Stan Lee is, they can at least say he's the guy in all of the Marvel movies.

I had the best childhood because of this man
when I was 4 I watched so many spider man series in animation with my dad. I had a costume, the web shooters, I hung on the door with my two legs. I thought I was Spider-Man. I even went to school like this during parties. while other kids were watching baby tv I was just watching spiderman. To this day I am grateful to this man for giving so many children such a great childhood. Even though he passed away, he still lives in our hearts for all Marvel fans.
