Delhi Water Crisis Ground Report: कौन है पानी के लिए तरसते लोगों का दोषी?

The water crisis in Delhi has reached a critical point, with its bottom 30 percent of residents facing severe shortages and grappling with poor water quality. Groundwater levels are plummeting at an alarming rate, worsened by pollution stemming from industrial and agricultural activities, untreated sewage, and the chemicals utilised in water treatment processes.
The unprecedented heatwave sweeping across Northwest India has cast a blistering shadow over the region, exacerbating existing water access challenges and reshaping water usage patterns. As temperatures soar to record highs, the water demand surged, placing immense strain on already depleting water sources.
Residents in the lower socio-economic settlements grapple with dwindling water reserves as reservoirs evaporate faster than they can be replenished, intensifying the struggle for access to clean water. The scorching heat accelerated water scarcity and complicated the situation by heightening water contamination risks.
The Supreme Court, while hearing a Delhi government plea urging that Himachal Pradesh be directed to release its excess water to the national capital and Haryana to facilitate its free flow, questioned the petitioner: “Water is coming from Himachal… Where is it going in Delhi?”
A vacation bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Prasanna B Varale, while hearing the plea, also took umbrage to the Himachal Pradesh government saying in a letter that the excess 132 cusecs of water, which the state was willing to release to Delhi, is “already flowing uninterruptedly”. The court wondered what was then the point of the states claiming earlier that the excess water could be measured at the barrages to know how much excess water had been released.
“Himachal submitted before this court that we have excess water. And now the letter says that the water which we have is already released, meaning thereby, they have no excess water. The entire basis of your (Delhi government’s) petition is that Himachal has excess water - 137 cusecs. Then if you are already releasing it, why was it not made known to the meeting of the Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) on June 5 pursuant to our order? It was never informed to the Board… on the contrary, the other day when the document was produced, your Additional Advocate General said that this document was also produced before the board… Why are false statements made in court?” asked Justice Mishra.
India reported nearly 25,000 suspected heatstroke cases and 56 deaths due to heath-related causes from March to May, Reuters reported, citing local media and government data.
May was particularly harsh, with temperatures in Delhi and Rajasthan soaring to 50 degrees Celsius.
Notably, there is some relief in sight as the weather office has predicted less severe heatwave conditions until Wednesday. The early arrival of the monsoon in Kerala last week is expected to bring further relief.
Meanwhile, parts of eastern India grappled with Cyclone Remal, and heavy rains in Assam have claimed 14 lives.
