"He who desires Peace, should prepare for War"
Flavius Vegetius Renatus
Here for my daily thought about the roman empire
So Nerva gets overlooked despite having a solid rule, which acted as the blueprint for the greatest rule over?
He gets overlooked because he was an old man who ruled exactly how the senate wanted him to. The most remarkable thing he is known for is his choice for succession.
Tbh nerva being part of the “5 good emperors” is lowkey insulting cuz he was not a good ruler and made the economy worst even after all the efforts that dometian had put. Just like the person above said. His best achievement is quite literally picking Trajan.
Nerva reminds me of joe biden
It's mostly because his reign was so short, not even 2 years. If he'd lasted a decade or so he'd be better remembered.
@@vannchansenany10d32Thats why I didn‘t like the Term „5 good emperors“ because it‘s overshadowing the Flavian dynasty, which was probably the Most Important in Roman history
Nerva's involvement in unmasking the conspiracy against Nero is overlooked. I'm really disappointed that the Nerva that appears in "Quo Vadis" has nothing to do with the historical one.
I got motivated by you and started my own channel 🤘
Good evening! Hope all is well, I saw your channel & I think its extremely good, but I had a business enquiry. Do you have an email for that? This isn't a bot comment, don't worry 😅
I always remember Nerva because I "Nerva heard of him"
They really wanted those Romanian cars
Amazing video, love all your videos on rome, especially this one!!
Emperor Nerva had a pretty fascinating story, considering that he, despite being the 12th emperor, was born when the 2th was still alive, saw two roysl dinasties being overthrown and created the best the empure ever had A mini-series about roman history through his eyes from 30 to 98 A.D. would be amazing, actually
Very informative ❤
Dacia's resistance was real fierce for the time. They had even embarrassed Emperor Domitian earlier. It took Rome at the height of its imperial power while being internally stable, and a military campaign led by arguably Rome's best military minded emperor, wielding the legions at their best, to fully subdue Dacia.
Trajan felt secure enough politically at home and at the borders to pull together 150k to 200k men for the Second Dacian War. You do not find the Roman Empire putting together such a large single command under one man much because: A) Most emperors were not that well military minded, B) Most Roman emperors would *never* trust anyone, not even a family member, to have such a single large command out of fear of that army being used against them (even Imperial China dealt with that), and C) Most emperors couldn't afford to leave Rome for long due to worry of political machinations going on while away.
The last time up to that point I think, that the Roman Empire had put a single man in command of such a massive army wound up "mysteriously dead" when the campaigns were over: Germanicus.
"Fully subdue Dacia" that surely never happened
I live where Dacia used to be 🤘
I like the quick overview type of videos but man it makes me want to dive deeper to understand the background. I like thus channel more because it sparks an interest in diving deeper into your topics. So thank you for that. Good work
For those interestbin the roman conquest of Dacia, there are two great romanian movies about those conflicts: "the Dacii", about Domitian's wars, and "Columna", about the conquest and romanization of Dacia under Trajan
* * WRONG ! DACIA WAS NEVER CONQUERED BY TRAIAN...
yes...small pieces of land were under short occupation...BUT NEVER CONQUERED DACIA as a whole! * *
Great video
Nice video, very well explained
thanks knwoledgia
Bluntly. DAMN GOOD!!
Notification after 6 days :)))
Well, the information about Dacia is mostly accurate, but the map is not the best.
Plus, you could have used another representation of kind Decebal. As we have images of him on the Column of Traian.
Does Domitian deserve any credit for stabalizing the empire? He reduced inflation, and was the least greediest emperor, plus the institutions ran pretty smoothly.
Despite many achievements, the Christians did not like him for his persecutions, and thus, wrote poorly of him. He had a bad rap for a long time, like Julian.
Yeah like the commment above domitian is solid but because he had a tendency to piss the people off who wrote the histories he’s portrayed as a dick. Even though he is a very good administrator and this emperor.
He seems like an idiot 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂@@user-us6yg5qu2i
Well, he didn't conquer whole Dacia.
The title is a little deceiving. 😊
He conquered what interested him in Dacia, the gold mines and the salt mines.
@@CocoSon-we2rg * * WRONG ! That was only for a short time ! * *
@@gt-c- Not only that. Dio Casius: "After staying for some time in Rome, Trajan undertook an expedition against the Dacians, thinking about their attitude and being outraged by the tribute they paid every year and because he saw how their powers were growing, and their arrogance". Moreover, in the East, the Romans had to face the threat of the Parthians, who proved to be a formidable opponent for the Empire. Trajan would have been caught between the Dacians and the Parthians, Trajan needed peace in the area of Dacia, but the economic reasons were even more pressing.
Dacian gold was famous, and the Romans had learned of the riches found in the mountains of the northern Danubian territories. The conquest of a territory rich in resources was an opportunity to fill the treasury of Rome, drained by the extravagances of Domitian and at the same time to face a new war effort, as I said before with the Parthians.
@@CocoSon-we2rg ...good write and correct!
A better title: "How the romans were able to conquer a small part of Dacia, for only 165 years"
Only Augustus comes off as truly iconic.
the map isnt too accurate sarmiszegetusa is east of projected position just above the liver shaped mountain range,
trajan entered dacia through turnu severin where he actually built bridge over danube then went east and north through valleys of river Cerna and Timis and then Bistra
Also, the Romans didn't conquer all of Dacia, but just a little less than half of the whole territory inhabited by Dacians.
Hi! I would also add the years in the title, it helps knowing the order of the videos.

Sir? Can we get audio track for other languages?

Unlike what most people might think, Trajan's achievements in Mesopotamia weren't as great as his victories in Dacia
He didn't even fight any battles there like he did in Dacia and faced no Parthian royal army or any army sent by the king
He just besieged cities with his vast army
The Parthian empire at the time was divided in two with the eastern parts and some of the central provinces being taken by Vologases III and the western parts such as Mesopotamia, Atropatene, Media, Khuzistan/Elam and Armenia being taken by a usurper king called Osroes I (the one who started the war)
Trajan attacked the Parthian empire when the Parthians were in a civil war (both because of the Parthian Osroes I who rebelled against the Parthian king and betrayed the treaty of Rhandeia) and were very weakened but still lost all the conquered cities to Iranian rebels and some soldiers after he left
Even during Trajan's invasion, the Parthians gained some victories
Trajan failed to take Hatra, which avoided a total Parthian defeat and he himself was wounded during that siege
Plus aside from Ctesiphon and Susa, the Parthians had five other capitals in the mainland great Iran behind Zagros mountains
The Parthian forces attacked key Roman positions, and Roman garrisons at Seleucia, Nisibis and Edessa were evicted by the local populaces and the Romans were pushed out of Mesopotamia with the defeat of Trajan's puppet king by the Parthians who reconquered all the territories that were lost to Rome during the invasion
The treaty of Rhandeia which was agreed between the Parthians and Romans after the Roman defeat at the battle of Rhandeia was honored by Trajan's successor again
According to this treaty, the Parthians choose a prince of the Arsacid dynasty as the king of Armenia and his crown was given to him by Romans (although the Parthians coronated the prince first in their own land)
His invasion ended in a stalemate at best
His victories weren't that great in Dacia neither, the occupied territory was much smaller, 1/2 of what the video shows, and the occupation lasted for only 165 years
I didn't realise how unknown Nerva and Trajan's origins were
Proud Mauro-Roman (Moroccan Italian)
Add subtitles please?
They wanted the Dacian gold. It helped stabilise the currency.
Why so many mispronunciations?
Nice question.
Marcus Cocceius Nerva (18 September 96 - 27 January 98),
Marcus Ulpius Traianus (28 January 98 - 11 August 117),
Publius Aelius Hadrianus (11 August 117 - 10 July 138),
Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Pius (11 July 138 - 7 March 161),
Lucius Aurelius Verus (7 March 161 - 169) and Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (7 March 161 - 17 March 180).
The map You used was one of the best. Basternae tribe was the Pontic Scythian tribe, the Scythian Kingdom (9th century BC - 2nd century AD) capital Kamianka was more nomads gathering than the city. As Iazyges Metanastae and Rox AlānI were Sarmatian tribes, WE CAN SAY the REGION BETWEEN the DANUBE RIVER IN NORTH SERBIA AND CENTRAL HUNGARY AND the DON RIVER IN TODAY'S SOUTH RUSSIA SHOULD BE CALLED KINGDOM OF EUROPEAN SARMATIAN TRIBES.
Was Nerva the heir of Domitian or the successor of Domitian?
When I see then names of those cities, I cannot help but lol…. Now, how could I trust you anything else? Please make a disclaimer like “I am just a hobbyist”. I live in one of those cities, so I know the history of it.
Same for Dacia also. Roman history is hugely overstated
why "US - airforce" didn't helped to conquer Persia
Because the gangs in America and the Jewish lobby prevent them

Dacia stepway anyone?
Me
The Romans only conquered less than half of Dacia, not Dacia.
Thats all you have to say, no compliments or thanks for the hard work, just pendantic criticism?
@@sebjornsprauten1406 I am not here to give compliments, nor am I here to criticize. I just made a correction. The compliments come in the form of monetary gains for the creator of the content, because I bothered to watch the video.
@@m.dewylde5287shallow and pedantic
The roman thieves conquered Dacia only from 106CE to 271CE a total of 165 years, and the occupied territory was much smaller, about a half of what this video shows, they never reached so North, there were always living the Free Dacians "Dacii Liberi" who permanently attacked the romans back. Roman ethnically mixed mercenaries troops never got so far neither to the east, nor to the west in Dacia territories.
And when they were finally thrown out in 271CE, they robbed Dacia of an unimaginable quantity of HUNDREDS of TONS of gold, plus silver and other values they could grab.
All they had was stolen from their neighbours..

Ohh the pronunciation of the names, is this the "RIGHT" way or just the voice?

Took half of the video to get to the point.....also the map of Dacia is wrong...The Dacian Kingdom also included the Getae and Costaboci tribes seen on the map in the video....
The Karps later arrived where the map in the video indicated.
Map representation is terrible. The map you're showing is the territory Rome settled and latinized after Decebalus' death, Decebalus' managed to unite all the Dacian and Sarmatian tribes, that includes the Getae, the Bastarnae, the Costoboci, the Carpi, the Roxolani. Also, the Carpi weren't that far west, but east, next to the bastarnae.
I think you're splitting hairs a bit. You clearly know quite alot about this topic but maybe next time try to be a bit more polite, this guy us making great content for us all to enjoy for free. Maybe offer you're advise on where to get good information ect.
Friend, you are mistaking.Burebista did that. The map id not 100% accurate, but it is reasonably close to the reality.
Decebal didn't get to the Black Sea coast, he mostly owned the land between mountains, Oltenia and Banat, conform to some maps that i found.
@@Alexandru1996_ Again, what you're referring to is Roman Dacia, or Dacia Traiana, which was settled and turned into an imperial province by the Romans after their victory over Decebalus. Are you sure the maps you found online aren't reffering to Roman Dacia? Quite an easy mistake to do if you just google roman dacian wars and the first map which pops up is Roman Dacia.
Dacia under Burebista was even bigger, stretching into Pannonia and the Greek colonies along the Black Sea coast in the Thracian region, which are under Roman control here.
mamma mia
Finally I get to see how dacia was conquered 😄
Before America became a super power there was Rome.
Find ten similarities between the roman empire and the US
