- (27 Jul 2014) Despite a temporary lull, the streets of Gaza City were quiet before Eid al-Fitr, the festival which marks the end the Islamic holy fasting month of Ramadan.
Palestinians say this Eid will be difficult to celebrate while war rages across the Gaza Strip.
"How can the people who lost their homes and children celebrate Eid? How can we be in the mood to celebrate? Our shop is not open because of Eid, we're open because we can be out for a change," said shop owner Eyad.
The Eid holiday begins on the first day of the month of Shawwal, the tenth month of the lunar Islamic calendar.
The 20-day war has killed more than 1,030 Palestinians, mainly civilians, according to Palestinian health officials. Israel has lost 43 soldiers, while two Israeli civilians and a Thai worker in Israel were killed by rocket and mortar attacks from Gaza.
The Palestinian death toll was revised on Sunday and an earlier figure dropped by 30 deaths, a Gaza health official said.
