- Drone footage in 4K and ground footage in 1080p.
Skip to 10:24 for the impressive final scene at Tunnel 3!
The loaded oil trains on Pengra Pass are impressive to watch since they run uphill. This consist was a 5x4x1 though one of the head end units was dead in tow. This one had a nice mishmash of road names.
I don't often do video from the ground but these trains are too impressive to not capture from all angles especially with the sound you get.
Locations are:
-Dougren
-Westfir
-North of McCredie (T21)
-Warner Cr. Road
-"Slide" below Fields
-Abernathy fill site
-Tunnel 3
Aerial footage taken from a DJI Phantom 4 Pro.

Overhead views are incredible. Getting to see areas that most people will never get to see.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again….I can watch RailFan Dan all day. Your videos are amazing to watch.
The train landscapes and that music..... Just fabulous and amazed
Well, you can definitely say this was a "SMOKIN' " video...Great work! Thank you!
Ha yes absolutely! I love scenes like that myself.
Good job they are all DPUs fancy being the engineer driving the rear unit, he would have to ware a space suit, superb again Dan ,thanks
Simply put, I'm spoiled for any other rail/drone footage. Top notch captures.
Wow, 10 engines. Thanks, Dan.
Amazing scenery.
Getting down into the trees and continuing to chase? Dude, you are either a really good pilot or you’re nuts!
Haha! With experience comes confidence for sure. :)
Dan, again another great video! I loved the ground footage to really get a sense of just how long those trains are. It must have been a hard climb for that train to use that many engines. Nice Job Friend!
Thanks my friend! Yes these are about as good as it gets anywhere you go as far as a climb up a hill! Pretty lucky to live so close.
Wow!!!! Great footage Dan 👍👏👏amazing site too
Great flying!!!
Beautiful shot going through the forest and mountains.
Beautiful video. Scenery and train are great. Look forward to everyone of you videos!
Another great video Dan .
Very scenic !
I would never skip a minute of your drone footage, it's just so well done. Brilliant video, again. Every time I see your videos from Pengra Pass it reminds me I need to ride the Coast Starlight.
Most people: oh cool, Canadian Pacific and Canadian national power.
Me: starts singing oh, Canada
Haha!
Seems like from the first time I started watching your videos up until now, you’ve become quite the daredevil with your drone! But hey, I’m not complaining one bit. Another exciting video. Keep them coming.
Experience comes with confidence. ;) And a GREAT sense of depth of field! That part really does take some time though.
Wow Dan your skills flying that drone is Top Notch!!!
You should be teaming up with Pentrax or Producing your own brand A+...
I enjoy every minute of your work
Spectacular as always, Railfan Dan!
Nicely done! Aerial footage is just fantastic.
Great work Dan. Fantastic aerial shots!
Fantastic Drone and Camera work, and the Landscape is second to none! Bravo
Awsome video! The drone footage was amazing as was the ground footage, nice to see that the vestiges of the old SP still live on. Huge trains mid and rear units needed and lots of smoke at tunnels.
And it's amazing to see "Southern Pacific" on rolling stock and Union Pacific's SP heritage unit on their "home rails" in Oregon on the former SP and other locations.

Just want to give my appreciation for your skills and patience in producing all your videos and for sharing.
Cheers Brian (UK)
Awesome footage and drone coverage. Scenery there is gorgeous too.
Wow Dan, your videos are so stunningly awesome, they take my breath away, thank you.
Awesome flying avoiding all of those obstacles.
All kinds of awesome. ty 👍😎
Awesome catch, love it.
MARAVILLOSO Y EL ENFOQUE ES GENIAL !SALUDOS¡
Nice mix of power!
Superb drone footage.. really a dangerous but beautiful location
Do you do all this photography alone or do you have other spotters stationed at certain points to continue the following of the train? I really enjoy the Arial photography, I would think to be able to do this would take a team
Nice one, Dan!
Great drone video in awesome location. Glad I found your channel. Like that train exiting the tunnel with all that exhaust bellowing out of the tunnel. I can almost smell it. You must have gotten a nose full. Seems like the vids I have seen are 2-3 yrs old. Have you done anything more recent?
Thanks John glad you found the channel. Oh yes I try to upload videos somewhat regularly and have done a lot since this video! Check out my recent material on the channel and you'll have a lot to choose from. Scenes from this video are pretty close to home for me but I travel pretty far out to get many scenic locations as well. @@TheRailfanDan I already subscribed some months ago and hit that like button, plus shared some. Look forward to future vids.
Awesome footage! Don't at all mind the ground shots
Awesome!
Very cool once again.
Sure glad i was not in a caboose on that tunnel lol great video Dan.
Great video
Every time I see one of the darker colored CP locomotives like 8064, I am reminded of the old SP box cars, and they seem to use the same font.
With those last scenes, you understand why SP was placing the cabs on the front of the steam locomotives.
Just imagine when it was the sd40T-2 and SD45T-2 era when the motors lacked ac units and there was no DPU's and the mid train helpers where manned as where the rear pushers.
Can't imagine what it was like on the steam loco's, but I'd like to think that the guys doing that for a living would either get used to it quickly, or find a different job! As for diesels, I'd like to think that the windows and doors would shut tightly and have no drafts, but unfortunately, I know it's not quite that good. I guess they'd just close up as tightly as they could, stay calm and still and try not to breathe a lot until they popped out the other side. Heaven forbid the train should be slowed or stopped while they were in there, they'd die in there. What's the length of that tunnel, anyways?
I saw this train in park in the yard in Eugene. Made me wonder if you were going to get some video of it. BTW, outstanding!
Beautiful videography and choreographing of the imagery. One thing I would change is to cut away more often from the music to the actual sounds of the train. Add some real-time train sound if possible from the drone footage. Would help break things up. Became a bit boring to me with long stretches without real-time overhead train sounds. Great images and drone work!
Drones do not record sound because all you would hear is the buzzing of the propellers, so if you add sound it has to be from another source on the ground and it is tricky to try and match up sound from the ground in a single locations to the drone footage when you continue to move the drone with the train. I have done it a couple times before but it takes MUCH more effort to do so and make it sound realistic to the drone video.
Nice one.
Awesome
You can almost feel the planet warming while watching this... lol
Nice
Awesome video. Gotta up my game to this level. Excellent flying. What model drone?
Says in the video description that it's a DJI Phantom 4 Pro.
Hard to estimate the trains length or number of cars. It's an extremely long train even by American standards. Beautiful mountain country.
I know you wouldn't be riding in the The Pusher on the end but if I did I would need a respirator on that engine
Wow, that was quite a smoker on that center power string. I hope the crew was in the front engine.
whats the range of the drone?
I've achieved over two miles once but that is tricky. You've really got to be out in the middle of no where. The less populated the area the better range you'll get.

Very cool.
Hope Kate Brown doesn't see that last shot coming out of the tunnel, she will be trying to shut down U.P.
do you or anyone else know the tonnage, number of cars and length of these trains ... peter from australia
I gotta get my ass to California!
That's a sweet spot at the tunnel, can you drive up to that or is it like a hike?
Nope it's super easy access right off a paved road.
@@TheRailfanDan except when snow is present...then it's a challenge!
@@TheRailfanDan Very enjoyable video, Dan!
The CP power gives this oil train away as a consist from Canada. The UP power is now in the lead, and I can't help but wonder if the oil train's headed to California.
Yes headed to Bakersfield.
what was the train symbol?
I'm actually not sure on that...
Another great video Dan .
Very scenic !
