Checking the thrust washer wear and crankshaft end play on this inline detroit diesel 671
Please be very careful When under the bus. We just lost one of our Penske mechanics (Cesar)when the air suspension let go and The bus came down and crushed him. We do things 1000 times to save time and then 1001 time Tragedy strikes.
Happy to see (and hear) Mrs. BGM on the camera! Her gentle reminders for the two of you to mind your eyes and faces come from the heart.
I am so glad to see you producing videos regularly again. I really enjoy all your work. Thank you from a grateful viewer.
Happy to see {hear} Miss Kelly is back, missed her excellent camera work! Keep up the great content!
Well, it was sure nice to hear Kelly's voice again. Yippie! This looks like a great project.
I have a pit in my garage (drain, air and power in the pit) even an outdoor pit would make your life so much easier.....
BGM has said so many times that he can't work over his head and doesn't want a pit!
He is thoroughly sick v of the suggestion!!
@@peterrogers9228 Calm down Peter,,,, I did not realize that he ruled that out..... sorry for the suggestion.....
@@shaneshklov5426 That is alright. Just dont want to get him upset.
I think Tylor suggested to Scott that the "pit" was becoming the new "plasma cutter?" (something else that was constantly brought up)
These are the type of videos that are just mesmerizing for me. Thanks.
One thing that Scott doesn’t fear is getting dirty.
Thus, the moniker, "Bus Grease Monkey"! He and Tyler are highly skilled and work very well as a team. Always impressed by their troubleshooting and repair prowess. Excellent job!
Spiders, on the other hand.....
You deserve a big garage with all the bells and whistles so you don't have to break your back on the ground. Always enjoy your videos and the knowledge that you have. 👍🏻
Frank Biz. Totally agree 😊👍
Oh the joys of detroit lubrication.Interior and exterior.
I've been into antique cars all my life, now you have me wanting an antique bus. Keep up the good work.
GOJO to the rescue! I have a tub in the back of van. I always forget which is the scrubbing side when I use one on my face, LOL!
The rebuild history on the engine is amazing. It has to be a million mile 6-71.
That appears to be the engine from Carolina Coach Co. C5816 based in Raleigh, NC. Evidently they did their own rebuilds in-house.
I was thinking NO…don’t drop that pipe on your glasses lol
The eye glasses did get broken yesterday while i was under the bus doing this job.
I was thinking the same thing.
@@BusGreaseMonkey One of the crappy things of glasses...However I probably be missing an eye if it weren't for mine.
I believe thats the fault of an overzealous Crank grinder when they did the last overhaul That thrust washer looks entirely too good to be worn out .Usually you see copper when they are worn
A full pull down of the bearings is likely to reveal that one has been taking nearly all the wear, in each direction.
I do NOT envy the work you have to do on these buses, but I do enjoy watching it. Learn stuff I never even thought about.
i missed tge chat, but still watch the work, always good to watch those neighbors who know what their doin😁🖐 Thanks GM !!🚎
was following the chat. That's some serious wear. Hope this doesn't get any worse.
As to the heat, Southern Arizona. We had our pre-rain heat wave. Set records at 117⁰F. Hope the rains bring cooling as they did here. 69⁰F was the high for yesterday.
You guys ROC! Great video! I know it is hot, humid and hard work but you just keep pressing on. My hat is off to you.
Latex gloves are amazing!
Watching the video, it looked like the dial indicator was going around the OTHER way, which would be .060 (ish). Wow....
As indicated below the video speed was deceiving. It looked like .060 to me too.
2 cups fast orange
1 cup 70% rubbing alcohol
1/4 cup Dawn dish soap.
Alternatively, Dawn applied and wiped off dry. Works like a charm so long as you DON’T get your hands wet first.
It will be interesting to see what you find. Stayed Tuned Folks!
Well that's not good. Things were going so well on this one too. I know you guys will get it figured out and taken care of though. Nice work Scott.
Protective glasses my man also spray degreaser on under side, power wash then take it apart.
Time for new bearings or a rebuild. Those are great engines though, for the road or on the water.
New bearings will not fix that much endplay. Crank replacement is necessary.
A pair of 10's would get you to 0.020 - 0.022 based upon how I was reading the indicator. That's 2X ideal but not so far from the 0.018 wear limit. Would certainly be an improvement until you want to pull the motor. After checking the rest of it over better you may find its cheaper to grab a used one like you did a year or so back...
If 15 or 20 overs are available that would probably be ideal
3:40 DO NOT CHEAP OUT AND BUY THE LITTLE CANS OF WIPES. I have bought both and while the wipes in the little cans are good, they're nothing compared to as good as the ones in the jugs: they're larger and much heavier cloth, so have a lot more scrubby and soap to them as well.
Buy the expensive ones, you won't regret it!
Well, the one caveat being their packaging kind of sucks if you order a full case... They tend to get cracked or pop open in shipping.
Fast Orange soap works great & is biodegradable. Also helps keep hands from cracking.
Your a saint for doing that on the ground you deserve a drive over pit !
Never want a pit like that
Luv your work Scotty I learn a lot from ya I got a 871 that It needs a lot of future work!!
Nice plug for GOJO! Hopefully they will sponsor you! Nice to see the new bus added to the family fleet!
Well this is turning into a "Hey Lance" moment.
Not really
@@BusGreaseMonkey Well that's good then. I figured that, because the crank was that far out of spec, it would affect other components. I'm assuming the crank needs to be replaced, are you able to get a standard one?
a cheap plastic face shield. best investment EvaR for working under vehicles!
Actually where are your safety goggles also ,Kelly time to play HR and Health and wellbeing officer if he loses eye sight your dreams will end ,it's simple stuff really 😊😊😊
With that amount of play and the thrust washers not being shot makes me think the last crank grind was messed up. If the crank journels (main or big end) do not need a regrind could you have a spacer made to go in behind the thrusts?
As mentioned by some ,where are you gloves?
good to see and hear you camera lady is back helping out!......judging by a couple other videos I am surprised the KHOA has not growled about all the stuff down at the pad!......lololol
Yes we loaded the truck with a trip to the dump yesterday
I can see why you push those Gojo wipes now, first couple of times I saw them in a vid I was skeptical but I know that greasy spooge doesn't just wipe off with a wet wipe! Normally my trick for getting that crap off is wash myself with brake cleaner lol but might just see if I can get some over here in the UK as it can't be good for the skin & it gets damn cold in winter using that method!
I’m sweating just watching this lol man
Hope you put a pit in that new building!
No pit
I can't believe GoJo has not sponsored this channel!
Me too, but i guess i do it for free so why pay💰
I hope the new workshop will have a pit for you to be inside! These buses really have so much in them, it's such a fascinating channel! Thanks for the videos!
I think the upper limit on factory thrust bearings is about 10thou each, and that play is way beyond that :-(
Shimming will only work if the thrust faces on the crank and block are both OK, if not one or both are going to head towards either some serious re-work or the unusable parts bin.
Another consideration is how well centred the crank is to the block, I'd guess there's a figure somewhere that gives the tolerance for that. Gettnig the crank too far one way can wreck the rods and or rod bearings in no short order. Been there, got the tee-shirt :-(
please wear safety glasses that dirt will do real damage to your eye
Scott they make 0.20 over thrust washers if you can get them if not get a sheet of brass and make some
That is some crazy end play. I could not find anything over .010. Do you know where to look? I was going to call you before making any decision on how to proceed
If you want the best hand cleaner on the market get yourself some tko hand cleaner, it is now sold under the zep brand. I have not found a better product in all my years of work.
Those misshapen tailpipes are messing with my OCD.......
Hello brave man, when will you start with the building of an inspectionhole in the ground, where you can stand up working and saving your body.....greetings from a car mechanic from holland...
Last pubication I have from FP - Diesel shows STD, .005, and .010 for those Inline 71 series thrust washers...I do wish I knew what the STD thickness was.... (Interestingly Main Bearing Shells go STD, .002, .010, .020, .030, .040, .050 U/S and Rods go STD, .002, .010, .020, .030, .040 U/S) The DD manual I have is from 1952 LOL, states should be .004-.011 New and no more than .018 when "worn"
Those wipes are phenomenal
Great video keep them coming enjoyed it much
hey how many miles are on this bus of your daughthers and is the reason for the crank end play Poor maintenace
GoJo needs to sponsor the channel. They got a sale to me from watching how well they work for you. I don't get nearly as greasy as you but still handy to have out in the garage.
I reached out to them a few times and they never responded. I guess i mention them for free so why would they pay ;)
The Gojo towels are great I got some awesome , is that your daughters bus your working on Scott
Yes
That Tennessee chirt rocks are hard on back
i grab carpet remnants that i find in dumpster just for this kind of work man its almost like working in an office its so nice
Good luck.
Is the .010 oversized the cumulative amount or is each side .010 meaning .020 total take up? How long would you have to leave a pan off a Detroit to keep it from dripping on you?
Do you want the answer expressed in months, years, or decades ? Actually, a day or so would be enough, then get up there with a few rags or some compressed air to blow out the stubborn stuff. When you start undoing things, you'll uncover more drips, so it's almost never-ending.
Great camera shooting
Have you considered a grease pit in your shop? I know Greyhound Here in San Francisco had one when my ex-father-in-law worked there with a pressure washer.
I worked with them on a farm and you had to be careful, it was a farm so we had no cover. They were wood and had rotted and broken and not replaced. We tried to keep a vehicle over them tor remind us that they were there. and a magnet on a long stick was essential to retrieve dropped tools
I also saw .060” judging by the way the needle swept on the gauge.
I guess i’ll have them move it slow but it looked like it was not going around the long way. I think you just saw an optical illusion
Frame by frame there is no indication of direction and it real life it looked like it was going the short way. You may be right though. Regardless .40 of .60 i think the end result is the same. Way to much
I was gonna say - 70 to 30 clockwise is 60
@@BusGreaseMonkey Looking at the .100 dial it looks to be less than .050 but it may be the angle.
Yep, that was a fast needle sweep, but looks like .040". Is there a chart for those thrust bearings showing their thickness?
I didn't see any stamps on the backs. Bet, well, I hope, those are simply the base size ones.
See if your Snap-On dealer has samples of their Nitro Gold hand cleaner. That stuff rocks. It's soy based and has some sort of lotion that helps keep your hsnds from drying out.
Would it be feasible to install an inspection pit?
Seems pressure washing should be first thing done on these jobs
All that accomplishes is opening up a bunch of oil leaks that had self sealed over time
I will stay tuned, have no doubt y'all will git'r done rite 🤓🐒
keep the videos coming
Ive just run the video at 25% speed, it is easy to see that it is 40thou. The small dial also shows less than half way movement between the 4 and 5
Yes the small dial moves less than half not slightly more than half. In real life it was obvious but the video was deceiving. I will shoot it slow motion in the morning though just to confirm
I did the same, since it looked like 0.060” at regular speed. Weird. But it confirms, and the small pointer’s direction agrees.
I’d assume the oversize thrust is 0.010 per piece, 0.020 per set? I don’t suppose a thrust set from a different Detroit would fit, and might be available thicker?
@@PeopleAlreadyDidThis The crankshaft is one piece so it stops moving at the first resistance even if the others have additional clearance. The others would only have additional clearance if they were under spec at assembly, i.e. a real botch job. So the end play is also the play on the tightest bearing each way. It could be a different bearing stopping the play in the opposite direction.
The engine has to come out to remove the crank, doesn't it?
No, the transmission could separated and the crank dropped that way. But 6-71 cranks are tricky to get and knocking on 1300 after tax, and shipping plus core return shipping.
Does the DTI not turn clockwise giving 60thou play?
That pan’s a real bleeder.
Where are your safety glasses
yeah that dial indicator needle is swinging the long way around, it's closer to .070. How the heck can it be that far off? Is there anything else retaining the crank laterally that might be missing? I was waiting for the muffler to fall in the drain pan and give you a bath, you got lucky there :)
That what I thought I saw too.
Hay Scott your white hands are gloss black. Lol.
when i watch this, it makes it easier to pay my mechanic...and he couldnt push your tool box..
Too Bad U aren't using some form of a Small Head Supporting Pillow, it's very hard on the Neck without one, trying to Look Up, and can mess with your Blood Pressure, too.
Aargh...
PS: Whatever you get paid, it's not enough. (Sorry, have I said that before?)
Man, you really need a pit or a hoist. I had 29 years of working on my back under buses and coaches and it sucks.
I like laying working over head. Standing working overhead is not comfortable to me
Just think! At the least you cleaned some of the crud off of the engine. grin
keep the videos coming.
dear man were are your gloves
Hey Scott, while watching the video I noticed the engine had an upgraded spin on oil filter. I would like to install 1 of those on the 671 in my 4103 but am having trouble locating what's necessary to complete such a job and where to buy the parts needed...any advice?...thanks Steve from Fla.....
On an inline there is no adapter i am aware of. You must find the whole oil cooler mount plate that is for the spin on. Be careful though i believe there are two different ones and only one works for yours. The difference is the oil cooler may mount 180° on the other side and thats where your starter is so that other version is not the same direction.
@@BusGreaseMonkey Thanks Scott....sounds like I might need to dig through some of Gene Russell inventory.....those old style sock filters are getting harder and harder to find....Luke don't even have any and is trying to locate another supplier.....Steve
Hey something different for the channel, was wondering what the crescent pieces of metal were when you did a main change.
Those are the thrust washers. “The bearings that hold the crank side to side movement
The next question you’re probably asking yourself is the crankshaft rebuild a bowl or will I have to find a different one
I dont think it is worth the trouble to rebuild the crankshaft into a bowl. They might do it in Pakistan though!!
I wish you had a pit// for filming
I meant to buy some of the GoJo towels after seeing the “magic trick” in a previous video, but I ended up with “Tub ‘O Towels.” Are they the same thing?
They're different. I have the ones you have. Takes a few towels to clean up my arms after dealing with a similar amount of grease/oil that Scott had on his hands. I need to get some of the Gojo towels myself. Also need to get the hand soap that Tyler tried out when he was at Chris' shop in Indiana.
No not the same. Gojo is bigger, has a scrubber side and better cleaner
Sure hope when you build your new shop. you put in a pit. Trying to get things done lying on your back seems a little counter productive.
You are going to be disappointed
@@BusGreaseMonkey Yes. I watched the video of the new shop slab. That's going to be a big shop.
looks like somebody put std trust washers in a .020 cut crank. oops
Am I the only one who sees the needle pivot on the top part of the dial..? That would make it more like 60 thou I think.. 😕
I will video it slow motion tomorrow
@@BusGreaseMonkey Shoud have read further down, im not the only one... Thank you for all the videos and the true to life folks you and your family are. ✌️
I really appreciate your very informative vids . What is the light you are using ?
Titanium warrior mini 2 element earth
What are those angled plates on the exhaust tips?, I see those alot in your video's.
Think they're the hangers that mount the tailpipes to the bumper.
First shot of the back of the bus (a few videos ago) showed that the tailpipes were almost crushed closed so I'd guess they are a field-mod to open them up a bit
Do you have plans for a pit to work from a standing position rather than crawling under the bus to work on it?
I recall BGM saying in a live feed that he didn't want to work in a pit...
We are going to get a small lift system
Time for a stroker crank.
there is no such animal for a 6-71.
Sure hope you put a pit in your shop or you are getting a lift system.
a see rebuild coming.
How much for a crankshaft bsm?
Another commenter suggests 1300 bucks, tax, shipping, core return and shpg. Not sure if he's talking good-used, or new. Before I'd spring for a crank, I'd be digging a little more around in there, see what truly is the cause of such wild end-play.
i wonder if the crank thrust faces are not destroyed.. the thrust bearing faces look OK.. i wonder if one could contact a precision water jet cutting company and with larger thicker thrust bearings from a different application.. you might be able to get water jet cut extra thick thrust bearings for your daughters bus engine. if you can't add brass shim stock behind them..
Auch, that looks expensive :/
Crankshafts done.
Terrible news on crank thrust. Could you use a shim under them? Or is another crank in the future for this engine? That would really be a bummer.
you can shim anything just ask uncle joe
