    Please be prepared - this is an overly detailed, slow-paced, and slightly boring overview of first time users muddling through a slightly complex setup/use/clean-up process. Although, by no means an entertainment video, it may come in handy for anyone overwhelmed with the 'beginner' aspects of this airless paint sprayer. Enjoy!

      I'm fairly new to paint sprayers myself. My stepfather is a professional painter and he loves the Graco brand. I plan to start me a small farm soon. I will be making furniture and other things as a way to generate a side income on the farm. I was looking at this prayer along with brushes & rollers for when the project requires a coat of paint. I like your video as it was very helpful.

      Gday mate, should I buy this airless sprayer or the wagner 350 pro? I'm a builder and would like to use it in my projects. Cheers

    • @GettinBelizy
      @GettinBelizy  Před 4 lety +5

      I have no experience with the Wagner 350 so I won't be able to advise you on that one. But, seeing that you're a builder, I would suggest you consider the Graco X7 instead of the X5. For around $100 more, you get a little more power (can run longer hoses) and a handy stand.
      Maybe others on here have used the Wagner and could pipe up on this?

    I was determined not to spend $1700 to have my basement walls painted by a professional, so I bought the Graco Magnum Painter Plus. Your video, (part 1-start-up), was MOST helpful. I followed your demonstration step by step and was up and running in no time. It took my wife and me two days to mask everything, (we're in our late 70"s), fifteen minutes to perform the start-up, and only three hours to paint the walls. We are extremely happy with our finished product. If you have a big painting project and dread the thought of using a roller and spending days on a ladder I highly recommend the Graco Magnum Painter Plus and watching your videos. Trust me, you'll be happy with the easy results. Your videos are a must watch. Thank you for giving me the confidence to take on something new and making life easier. Great videos!! (By the way, my total cost for the Graco paint sprayer, masking material, and paint was less than $500). Paint on.......

    If you are using two or more gallons of paint, "box" them (or mix) all into a 5 gallon bucket. This I'll ensure an even blend between all gallons of paint. If you have 3/4 gallon of the OG color, your color match will be slightly different. It's a different batch #, but same color. (Important to know when painting 400 units.) Always mix all your paint together. Do not cut out of a separate gallon, like the old color, then spray with the new. It will flash, or "picture frame". If it is a new color, there is less chance of flashing, but again, mix 2 or more gallons into a 5 gallon bucket. Boxing into a 5 gallon bucket saves time in the long run, obviously. If the job you are doing he's only going to take a gallon or less then, used to 1 gallon to feed from. Always remember though, the pump holds a small amount of paint and the hose holds a certain amount of paint, depending on the length. This could be up to 1 quart. Factor that in with jobs estimated for a gallon, you may get cut short, in some cases. Just some things to think about, people. Great video for newbs and the DIY types.

    While it's slow it was helpful to watch someone else go through the painful process of learning how to operate it. :) I bought the same model sprayer and used it for the first time today. I can see that I might've skipped step 6, because when I started spraying (primer) my garage door, for several seconds it sprayed a lot of water with the paint. I thought something was wrong, and it probably was me. After priming the sprayer I didn't go through the step of spraying into the waste bucket until only paint was coming out. And in a gallon bucket it probably went down almost 2 inches so I wasted a lot of primer, but had enough to do the whole door with a little less than a quart remaining. But it did a really nice job. I don't know how differently a commercial rig would be to set up, but to me the priming and having to have essentially 2 extra buckets, besides the paint can is too long of a process. And cleanup took a long time. I used my garden hose to purge out the paint. Another thing I should've paid attention to was how to recapture paint remaining in the hose. I ended up flushing all of that out with the water so I wasted more paint. But it's the first time I have used a spray rig other that a small one for shooting lacquer to paint guitars. Oh well, live and learn. Another thing about watching someone else do it is to see if they (you) experience so of the same things that I did, such as the motor pulsing on and off through the spray process. I think that's a little odd and might wear out the motor quicker than one that stays on, but I don't know if that's typical of "airless" sprayers. Suffice it to say, I need to re-read the instructions for awhile until I get the process down. I expected it to be simpler, like it is with my sprayer that runs off of my compressor. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I learned from it! One more thing to this already long thesis. I wish there was a way to change the width of the spray pattern without having to change tips. On my lacquer gun there's a knob on it that I turn either way to increase or decrease the size of the pattern. I can also adjust the amount of paint coming out to get a dryer or wetter coverage, and also adjust the amount of air being pushed out. On the Graco I know you can change the pressure but I haven't found a way to change the size of the pattern without changing tips. If it's capable of changing the pattern, other than horizontal or vertical, please let me know.

      We've heard the same but haven't seen a need to back roll anything yet. After talking to a number of pros on the topic, it sounds like the back rolling is only really needed on very rough surfaces such as non-sanded fence. The sprayer alone has worked great on smooth surfaces as long as you watch your spray nozzle distances and angle. Happy spraying!

    Thanks for this video. I just got this on Saturday. I read the instructions and I don’t understand them. It seems way too complex. They say it’s easy but to me it ain’t. I have to see it done to understand it.

    • @GettinBelizy
      @GettinBelizy  Před 2 lety +1

      Please don't confuse paint primer with 'priming the machine'. When we talk about 'priming' on this video, it's about starting the suction of the sprayer correctly - which is called 'priming'. It's just part of the process of using the sprayer no matter what paint you use. You actually do NOT want to use paint with paint primer in it because it is too thick. This sprayer only works well with thinner paints. I hope that made sense! Happy spraying!

      It was new paint, so no filtering. But we did thin some paint that contained primer before we sprayed it. Found out that is critical! Thanks!

    I bought one of those (Graco Magnum X5). Within the first hour of use, the power switch failed. I replaced the switch. While I had the cover off, I noticed that a wire that connects to a control module is poorly installed. There are two very small, flat tabs that the plug connects to. The plug has push clips that hold the plug in place, but there is no plastic part for the clips to clip to. I cut the plug off and soldered the wires in place so the wire wouldn't vibrate off. The main housing moves a little bit, so when I push the prime button, I have to hold the housing in place so that the housing does not interfere with the button.
    While painting, the sprayer would quit working several times. (Yes, I strained the paint.) Being brand new to paint sprayers, I didn't know if the tip was clogged, something else clogged, or what (It definitely was not sucking air.), so I kept starting over with it from the beginning. During the first couple of days, I spent MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more time trying to get the dang thing to work than I did painting. After the first couple of days, I got to where I could solve its problems more quickly, so that painting with the sprayer finally became time-efficient.
    You can find recommended sprayer PSI on some paint products, but this sprayer does not have PSI calibration on the dial.
    Overall, I highly recommend using a sprayer (I don't think I'd recommend this particular model, though.), but you shouldn't expect it to be as easy as sticking the tube in a paint bucket & start spraying.

      @@GettinBelizy well it’s a bit more than that as only the inside framing was done before we looked at it I warned the kids to look past ugly filthy and gross as we were looking to make sure it was structurally sound so with that in mind only 3 things wrong 1 sheet of the outside siding needed replaced and one framed interior bedroom wall needed studs replaced as prior owner in anger cut the studs in half and when removing building they clipped a branch with roof. They are fixing roof this cabin brand new sells for 38k kids getting for 20k the move fee 300.00 to put on their half acre they own free and clear as that was a tax seize but at 500.00 so finishing out home will be a project but we can get it done as they save to pay cash ..one step at a time they are 18 and 20 and will have Home free and clear in 5 years with enough land to do another if they so choose

    This is the first video I have seen that looks like my efforts my first time I used this sprayer. My only question I have not seen an answer to is what to do when you empty the first pail and the sprayer stopped in my case. Do you just move to the next pail of paint with the two tubes or do you have to start somewhere a few steps back to prime the pump?

      It's my understanding you can go straight to your second bucket of paint if you lose prime.

    Spraying walls takes longer than rolling walls. We use an 18 inch roller cover. By the time the Graco sprayer covers one 12 inch strip, an 18 inch roller would have covered about one 54 inch strip. Spraying ceilings, crown, trim and base is the real way to use a sprayer

    • @nicholash8021
      @nicholash8021 Před 2 lety +1

      I find that a brush is the best way to paint trim. By the time you tape the entire room up just to spray the trim, you'd have finished brushing and had lunch. You can get a very smooth finish with BM Advance and a good brush with good technique. Trim makes it easy because you're always moving the brush the same direction.

    • @GettinBelizy
      @GettinBelizy  Před 4 lety +1

      My understanding is that, yes, you can use a sprayer to apply wood stain. HOWEVER, you might not want to. 1) Stain is so thin that, even at the lowest pressure setting, you'll likely have too much coming out of the gun and will be fighting tons of drips and pooling. 2) You'd have to use mineral spirits to clean the sprayer - for a good clean, that's a lot of mineral spirits. 3) The aerosols (of which there are already plenty with oil based materials) will be exacerbated with a sprayer. You'd want a good heavy duty mask with good filters and a well ventilated room. Good luck!

    • @GettinBelizy
      @GettinBelizy  Před 3 lety +1

      5 gallons goes a long way. If we had used a 5 gallon on this room, it would have covered all the walls (and there are a lot here). As newbies, we went the not-so-smart route and used 1 gallon pails which wastes a lot more paint.

    If painting exterior, apply paint in an even coat then brush paint in. helps fill cracks, holes etc.
