The thing is, the ship DOES wait for passengers, for 20 mins or a little more. You are given a time to embark at a Port for a reason - the captain doesn’t just choose a time out of thin air.

Even before you go on a cruise you are warned not to be late as the ship will only wait for late passengers if they are booked on a tour through the cruise line and the tour operator will let the ship know that everyone will be late. The ship will wait for them. But there are so many times you are told repeatedly on the cruise to make sure you are on ship time as no other time exists aside from cruise time. You are supposed to be back on the ship at least 30 minutes prior to departure time. I'm back on the ship at least an hour before.I'm the time keeper of our group. That's ridiculous. They tell you what time it's leaving and what time to be onboard. Usually 30 minutes prior to departure. You don't have to be onboard any earlier than that. HOWEVER!!! To be safe you should definitely be within walking distance of the ship if you're within an hour to go! Taxi's and buses breakdown and traffic and weather are unpredictable. When we were in Bermuda we considered going on a scooter ride the last day but departure was at 2pm and we balked at being that far from the ship after 10 am. Bermuda's wharf is really isolated at one end of the island. So we walked around the wharf area and then went swimming at Calico Jacks with Rum Drinks.

I also heard about a couple who rented some ski-doos (sea-doo?) where the operator takes you out to a location and you launch from there. Well, the operator got upset over something they did and abandoned them. Trying to get back to port, ran out of gas and another boat picked them up. They were able to reach the Cruise ship and it actually stopped long enough to pick up the guest from this good Samaritan's boat. How, who, and how long is at the captain's discretion and after hearing from the 3rd party, he opted to wait for them. I'm sure this has been told and retold, so I have no proof if any of it is true. • @HAL_NINER_TRIPLE_ZERO

$500 won't cover the cost of delaying a departure. And there's no reason for it. And you delay 4-6 thousand other passengers because 1 or more dum-dums can't get their asses back to ship on time. The cruise line does not refund your ticket nor do they pay to transport you home or to the next port of call. And the lobster that the late idiots don't eat ends up in the crew's seafood chowder. That said, I like the idea of a fine (maybe $100/person) if you miss the ship at the last port of call because someone has to go in and pack up your nasty dirty clothes and all your sh*t in order to get it off the ship.
