Straw Bale Electrical

  • Kindra Welch, owner and chief builder with Clay Sand Straw, demonstrates one method to install electrical wiring in a straw bale house.
This method is not applicable in all jurisdictions. There are a variety of published codes and methods. The main goal of this method is to recess the wires a minimum of 2" behind the finish wall surface as in typical construction. Also, as in typical construction, conduit is not generally used because of its significant cost. If you want to use conduit, the flexible blue "smurf pipe" is generally the choice for bale building. As a mid point, some prefer to use the grey direct burial wire instead of standard romex.
In all cases, it is the inspector who will make the final determination and they should be contacted prior to installation.

This "chick" is booked solid for the next 6 years she is in such high demand.
She has a masters in architecture from Rice University and everything always surpasses code and passes all inspections. Every project surpasses the engineers guidelines and the local codes.

Our local building authority required that there be a thermal break between the wire and the bale. Just work with your county building authority and use them as a resource. They will help you to make sure your house plans are code compliant BEFORE you start building. If you view them as a resource instead of an obstacle, your project will go much smoother.

You should use small pvc pipe so if you have to rewire the wall you can wire pull new wire through. Also the wire is protected.

Just because you hand built your house using simple materials like local rocks, straw & wood...
doesn't mean you can't have modern comforts. BEFREEFILM shot this excellent tutorial on running
electrical wiring through a straw bale structure with guidance from Kindra Welch, owner and chief builder with Clay
Sand Straw. Her wedge systems is easy & affordable. Check it out for yourself.

Doing my research on " wiring a straw bale house for dummies " and I have sat and watched your video. Great job with great info. One comment. NEC (national electric code) state NMS (typical romex) shall not be used where covered in plaster. Alternative would be type UF cable but it must be multiconductor. Not nick picking just trying to help. Other than that thanks for doing this video we will be using these ideas on our first job and hopefully many to come.

How do you buy your straw? We are in the planning process and we are having difficulty locating a quality product. Do you have any suggestions? When we talk to some sellers of straw the bales are actually mixed bales of different products to be used as fee.

Name calling, cussing, screaming and ignorance is no way to learn and expand your world. We created this video for the electrical contractors that were unaccustomed to working on straw bale construction and therefore gave very high bids. An electrical contractor had come unannounced when no-one was at the job-site and improperly wired the house. That seemed like a good time for an instructional video.

    3 minutes in:
i wanted to comment and say that maybe this could work for: if the cable horizontal holding the bale snapped, how to remody it before its too late.
would this work? this is what i would do.
Put a board up and brace or lean on it, get another string that can be tied to the bale twine. tie a stoper knot (figure 8) on both ends, and get that other piece of string. tie it into the tail end on one side, something like a nother stopper knot. anything. a bow line. then on the other side with a bow line, make it into a truckers hitch and pull tight. this is what i would do

Romex wire should not be used in this fashion. By spending a little more money on Conduit you can ensure safety and haev more peace of mind. No matter where you are using conduit is the top tier of code policy and you will not fail unless you do not know how to place it. Since Electric is potentially dangerous it is very wise to know how to or hire a knowledgable contractor.
