It's a recording from a TV program that was posted on Ellen's CZcams Channel so I'm pretty sure they muted the sound of the crowd so you can hear the song and enjoy the performance. That is also how they often record official DVD footage of concerts. They mute the sound of the crowd or lower the crowd noise and raise the volume on the voices of the singers and music. No one wants to watch an official performance video and all they hear is the crowd screaming. Most people come to watch the video to see and hear the performance of the people on stage. :D However, you are right, Kpop video editors understand the importance of at least leaving the crowd interaction noise in the video even if its only 20% of the volume because Kpop is all about the fan interaction elements. But I don't think Ellen's people were prepared for how passionate Kpop fans can be and the simplest solution was just to take all the crowd noise out. Which is kind of sad, because you're right you do miss something when its not the true performance. Plus I think they edited the video and used the studio recording instead of the live vocals. If you watched it live you would have heard them singing live, but because of the crowd and the poor sound system, I think they weren't sure how to handle it.
Plus, i think "I Can't Stand The Rain" was the second performance so at that point the audio was completely worn out. LOL So they had some "technical difficulties." ;P
The space was too small and there were too many crazy passionate fans so it overwhelmed Ellen's sound system. Usually the sound tech only needs to be high enough quality to pick up conversations, not amazing vocals and their crazy fans who want to blow the roof off the studio. LOL They weren't prepared to have to sound master it.

Baekhyun always doing live high note even on concert i watch EXO perform 4x already the last one was in august with their super high note song and they singing it live with non stop dancing try to watch EXO Diamond+coming over+ run this+drop that+power Elyxion in Japan. Taemin also and the others can sing well live too even their company SM really suck sometimes but their artist is well train.

yeah they sang live at the show, i was lucky enough to go! but this clip is just the music that’s why you can’t even hear us screaming. it’s literally just the song playing over the performance.

In Jopping you can hear a little bit of their voices, but in I can't stand the rain you can't hear even the crowd. So I THINK they muted everything and just put the music on it🤔

The Ellen Show muted the audience obviously. The audience were too loud. It’s a common thing.
They sung live on the show but the editors for Ellen uploaded the video with the cd audio.

I remember watching these performances and thinking how unnatural they looked, you could see the people screaming and singing along, yet you couldn't hear them.
And we all know that:
1) you have to sing live on Ellen
2) if not anyone else, Baekhyun at least is known as the king of live singing (along with Chen), there are multiple videos of him even being angry when his mic was turned off and he was expected to lipsync.
So this entire thing made no sense. My initial thought was that they probably isolated the audio - turned up the volume of the song, tuned out the crowd. But it seems more likely that they just played a studio recording over it. I think they weren't prepared for how loud the crowd was going to be.
Great observations! Taemin as well has been singing live since his SHINee days and in his solo career. In Jopping I can hear the live vocals for sure. Baekhyun's high note was amazing and definitely live!
They had opened up with Jopping for their debut appearance then did the short interview afterwards performed “I Can’t Stand the Rain” off-air when the show was over.

They sing live. Just check out Baekhyun's CZcams channel and you'll hear him singing on his room, on his car, while walking etc. This man is just amaizing, that's why it's my fav kpop singer. All of them are super talented and very handsome.

Just to clarify, the song is called "I Can't Stand The Rain" which in English means "I can't handle the rain any more." if you can't stand something it means they can no longer tolerate it. Its been raining so long that you are going crazy and you can't handle another day that's just like the day before, etc. They are not saying they can't stand IN the rain. Just thought you might like to better understand the meaning of the song. :D

This is definitely Live. I am 10 years of Exo L and EXO baekhyun is strong is high notes, which is the main vocal. Actually....he is not only strong in vocal but everything.

I don't think The Ellen Show was prepared for they're performance. They messed up on "Can't Stand The Rain". They fixed it before Jopping but still sounded like they still didn't get it right.

My friend was actually there and she told me she could hear their heavy breathing and the fans were screaming like crazy. So yes i believe they were singing live and the fans were way too loud so im sure they layered the studio version

It's common practice to overlay live concert video versions with studio versions so you can actually hear the song. That's what happened here

In Jopping we can hear a lil bit of their voice but in I Can’t Stand the rain the playback was too loud probably because the audience also too loud. I think only those in the studio heard the live vocals and they isolated the back up track for some annoying reason. We know for a fact they can all sing live just the show didn't do them justice.
