- This video will teach you tricks & tips for keeping your polka dot houseplant healthy & happy as an indoor plant! The care needs for this plant are simple. At the end of the day, we all live in different home environments so just keep a good watch on your plant for warnings signs such as drooping, discoloration, stunted growth, & things of the sort. If you begin to notice signs like these, make a change to your care routine!
Today I thought I would share some of what I have learned since purchasing a polka dot plant several months ago. I do have several varieties of this plant & they have all been doing very well for me. What I researched for plant care needs on the internet didn't necessarily work for me, so here is what I have found works for my plants in my home environment! Thanks for watching!

Yes! She's such a drama queen of a plant. I was late watering it by like a day and it looked all shriveled and pathetic. Like 15 minutes later it was all perky and happy again
I went our of the city for 2 weeks and asked a friend to water my plants. He went like every 5 days and water it a bit, everything OK. I came back at night, looked at it and it was fine. I looked at it next morning and bitch was on her deathbed. I swear, all wilted and almost brown!! It gave me such a scare. I was so stunned I did everything, changed the soil, feed it and water it a bit. In 2 days it was back in health.
It was just like it was punishing me for leaving 🥲
Oh god i got a new polka dot plant the other day, i left it on my terrace and was late watering it for 10 hours.
Goddamn 10 hours and she was a shriveled corpse.
Drenched that bitch and left her, 2 hours later she's all perky.
Goddamn it
LMBO
Lol I thought mine was dead for sure. Gave it some water and she was better by that night 😂
I have a big one & a small one. The small one got repotted & move closer to the light & his ass died overnight. Drama queen. 😂
this comment sent me into orbit and i have no idea why LMAO just the way you said it 😹😹
🤣🤣🤣
I just got 2 little ones, my first ones ever, knew nothing about them, and repotted them. In 1 night they got soooo droopy (because I didn't water them) that I though that I had killed them. Watered them in an attempt to save them, and in 3hrs they were back to normal. They were just thirsty drama queens 😂
Lol
Why r we talking about plants like babies 😂
I agree with letting the leaves wilt a bit before watering. That was the game changing tip that my stepmom gave me and it stopped me from killing all my plants. Her way of saying it was, "You just let it tell you when it's thirsty." I've never killed a plant since.
Notes:
- prefer bright indirect light
- the more light, the more water it requires
- if plant gets too much light leaves may fade
- too little light may lead to leafy plants
- trimming promotes bushier growth; prune older leaves twice a year
- when wilted, watering it should perk it up
- let soul dry out completely between waterings
- plant is not heavy feeder but needs SOME sustenance:m; extremely dilute fertilizer and mix with water to feed
- if you feed too much too quickly, leaves will get crunchy on tips
- if you fertilize too much, clip off crunchy leaves
- propagate super easily; watch end of video for propagation tips
What fertilizer should I use?
Keely Hildebrand u can see what she uses at 3:47
Hi New polka dot parent. Bought at home depot. Very pretty. Theres lots of light green (not yellow) but lime green tiny baby leaves at the bottom 🌱 if you touch them they fall off. What is happening?
@@k.e3451 Espoma Organic Fertilizer.
*too little light may lead to LEGGY plants (not leafy)
Just got one, the wilting in seconds is ridiculously true, I thought I was going crazy when I seen a perfectly fine leaf start wilting.
Same! GREG IS DYING
Edit:
Greg is dead.
@@B33-Animates omg I named my polka dot plant Penelope. And this comment made me happy because I know I’m not a freak now. Thanks.
@@andycandy4489 no problem, glad I could help I guess 😅
The most dramatic plant 😂

I love watching how fast my polka dot plant recovers after fainting. They are certainly dramatic!
They actually do recover fast.
Your video was so helpful because you covered propagation, cutting, fertilizing, growing - everything in one video. Other videos tend to cover only one or two aspects and I can never seem to find a video that has the content I'm looking for. Yours is perfect. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for that feedback! I will continue to keep all that info in future plant care videos!
I'm so glad my commentary was helpful! Your videos are awesome.

This plant was a gift to me from my mom. I usually don’t buy plants anymore because they’re a huge commitment (to me cause caring for them requires tedious care and attention) and I have a good amount as is. So far plant has been incredibly hard to understand and she stresses me out. Regardless, I still love her and continue trial and error
After seeing how dramatically my polka dot plant will faint she earned the name Princess Dot! She’s gotten so tall, 14 inches at her tallest. I’m glad to know now I can prop her and share her drama and beauty with all my plant friends 💕🌿
I find it often in the "sick" plant section in Lowe's for half off
This video came at the perfect time, I just trimmed my polka dot plant, I put the stem cuttings in water but had no idea if anything would happen, glad to see I may get some roots after all!
The Frugal Farmhouse oh yay! My fingers are crossed you get strong roots quickly! It’s so fun for them to start coming in 😊
I found the information very helpful. I usually grew the polka dot plant outside. I am now trying growing inside. The only thing I still need to know is where would you pinch the plant? Thanks so much for your import.
I have my 1st pink polka dot , she's very temperamental . I watched numerous clips til I found u (I'm staying here). U provided all the info I needed except where to clip . I don't want to hurt her , but I'll give it a try . Thanks so much .
My husband bought me one from the supermarket back in May. It is half red and green with the polka dots. It's gorgeous!!!! It was on clearance. It got so big in its pot so I planted it outside. I live in an apartment on the first floor. (Also i live in Bethlehem PA and we have had freezing night's already and this plant is still thriving perfectly). It is enormous!!! I had no idea they get that big. Now seeing this video I'm going to cut some clippings and keep growing it. Thank you for making this video on them. It's so hard to find correct info on plants lately.
oh yay! Yeah they get pretty big!
Harli G is the polka dot plant the same as Dracaena? I’m new to the plant community and just got my first plant the Dracaena godseffian I think you spell it

I'm not sure if you'll see this, but I'm in Easton! Small world!
Omgoodness....love you used a nail polish container to propagate!!!! Genius!
I know!!! When I saw that I couldn't wait for my nail polish to finish so I can use mine, too.
omg i wanna do this but how can you clean it out that well??
@@amandarodriguez1450 nail polish remover? Put a bit inside and shake it until it seems like all of the polish is dissolved into the acetone? And then just thorough rinsing to make sure that the acetone is gone, that's what I would do
As a nail tech, I get tons of polish bottles over time. I am so happy to have a way to repurpose them!! Brilliant!
Believe it or not, my daughter’s polka dot plant was always happy and beautiful. Our beloved dog died in February and the plant died a week later.
Could someone tell me at what time on video she pinches the plant?
Who asked you all these 🙄🤬
@@pethuraj4155, is everything fine at home?
Hey Harli! My spotted plant keeps dying at the lower leaves, they keep turning yellow and falling off. At first I thought it was a potting issue (because it was growing out of it's pot) so I upgraded it, but the lower leaves are still dying. The rest of the plant is going fine, and growing fairly quickly. Thanks for your time! :-)
Oh man, so helpful! I just got mine a month ago and I’m definitely a new plant mom so I need all the help! I’m go glad you talked about trimming, I haven’t heard the term “leggy” but that’s absolutely what’s happening with mine and I would never have known. I, like many others, had this wilt and I totally freaked out so I’m glad I’m not alone!
Thanks for the helpful tips and tricks!
I just bought myself a polka dot plant. I learned so much from you. THANK YOU! ❤️
My plant who I named dot ☺️.. finally showed me her dramatic side! It was so fun to see her come back to life, thank you for your videos!
I remembered seeing your collection of polka dot plants in 2018 and I was amazed by the wide range of colors. Today I visit a nursey that only had a few there. Now I have a medium pink polka dot plant. I am so happy to finally to one. Thank you informative video🤗
Hi Harli. I got 4 little pink polka dot plants in the spring. Never tried before. Put them all in the same pot and doing nicely. Have trimmed twice and just put the cuttings in potting mix. They rooted beautifully for me. Have shared with 2 of my friends already. Yesterday I took a few more cuttings and started another pot for myself. Hoping to put it in my bedroom. So pretty.
Thank you for the propagation tips! Ever since I bought mine a few weeks ago, it’s been growing like crazy and getting pretty leggy. I cut a few of the stems off and put them in water, and they’ve been doing very well. :)
Brilliant! This is exactly what I was looking for... Covered all my questions. Thanks!
I bought one do these for my kindergarten son to care for. It’s going well-now. The leaves started wilting. My mom suggested we use ice on it. We took her advice and it started growing in a day it seems. He loves it! It’s his daily chore-to observe the plant and we decide what we need to do with it! I came here to learn how to care for it and to trim it.
This video is so comprehensive. Thank you! I no longer have a black thumb. I’m ready to by more plants. 🌱
Thanks, Carli!
I know this is old.. but what does the ice do
Ty this is my first plant in a long time and now I feel better informed to care for my "Emily" polka dot plant😊
i just got a polka dot plant and im so happy to have him!! mine i picked has pink and dark red with dark green, its so cute!
Lol I agree!! When she throws a tantrum I just give her a good soak and by the morning she's back to normal and has new bright leaves. Haha
Thank you for this video because I just bought my friend a Polka Dot Plant to cheer her up.
I got a little polka dot plant and it was beautiful. I kept my eye on it each day checking the moisture and figured it’s fine. This morning I wake up and it’s completely wilted !! I literally screamed and turned to this video. I watered it and put it back in its place. Praying it’ll be fine because it’s such a pretty plant ! :(
Glad, I found this video. I just added a teeny pink polka dot plant to my house.
I recently purchased my polka dot plant and I’m so excited. Great video!
I saw mine today and thought it was dead! I poured some water and a few minutes later she was happy and alive! Love, love your videos..I’m water propagating my first Monstera Deliciosa!
Thank you for answering all of my questions about my polka dot plant 😁
I’m so bad at looking after plants but this helped me so much, I almost killed my plant but you helped me save it
I am really really happy about that! Thank you ❤️

Excellent video! Simple, short, very informative and to the point. I enjoyed the sample portion indicating how and where to clip the stem. Well done, thank you.
So glad I saw this video. Mine are one stem leggy because I didn't realise trimming it would make it produce branches. Thank you ❤
Thank you!! This video helped out a lot. I’ve been noticing my plant has crispy leaf tips, who knew it would be from over fertilizing!
So glad I found this video. I impulse bought one of these and it’s been very sad. Going to trim it now and put it in indirect sunlight
This was incredibly helpful
I’m going to subscribe to you. I just got into house plants. My husband and I are vegetable and herb (spices) growers. I just bought a pink fairy plant off eBay and received her last night. She’s bushy already and gorgeous. I’m also happy to hear she’s non toxic to my cats. My husband brought home a lily flower for our anniversary years ago and it nearly killed our cat. I’m very excited in learning about house plants
Thanks, I have been struggling with my polka dot plant. Love your videos.
I have been having trouble with mine and I kept finding sites that said they need a lot of light and frequent water but my plant keeps dying so this was EXTREMELY helpful! Thank you! ❤
Fingers crossed it works out! They are such fun plants!
Hi! I just discover your channel and I'm loving it. 🌿💕
Thanks for the tips. I just discovered these cheery little plants while shopping and bought two in bright pink. Wish me luck!
Thanks for the great advice! Love my polka dot plants & can't wait to propagate my cuttinfs!
Such brief information that I was looking for. Thx sooooooo much ♥️
Just bought one today. Great tips!!!!
Yay! Let me know how it does for you (:
Bought one at HD in 3" pot, washed all the soil off the roots..and then am trying to grow it with roots in my aquarium water and tops above. Hydroponics. Next to a sunny and warm window. So far no shock or set back. Nice look.
Stan TheObserver I’ve tried this and mine looked great for a month and then the leaves started to almost dissolve. Hopefully yours works better than mine
Any update?
@@emilyr4402 Thanks for asking!.. Well,it grew fine,flowered..and then it died back. I tried to get it to re grow..but it was walking dead. On the other hand,it re seeded all over the other indoor plants. So,its growing right now with Bottle palms ( I grew from seed) and Dioscorea mexicana that I grew from a cutting. BTW- I have since found that Syngonium works perfectly as an Aquarium nitrate remover and looks as tropical as hell at the same time. Dose the aquarium water with iron for fastest growth!
@@StanTheObserver-lo8rx interesting 🤔 thanks for the reply! I heard crotons work out well too I just don't want to spend the money on it for it to die 😂
@@emilyr4402 Never Crotons!..they need a greenhouse worth of light to do well. Pothos is next best. Any vine Philodendron,or Monstera. Even Dieffenbachia will grow fine, roots in water ,top out of water.
Very helpful, informative, and concise you told me everything that I was doing wrong with my polkadot plants, I’m going to trim them back now and hopefully save them I just got a brand new one too so hopefully I won’t fail that one either thank you
I agree with you the first welt totally freaked me out and then I watered it and it bounced back so fast. It stuck in my mind so now I just let it do its thing.

Thank you!! My boyfriend bought me a polka dot plant earlier in the year and it grew super fast, it’s outside at the moment. I heard they can die after flowering, which mine has, but it’s still alive, but I’m hoping to propagate it after doing some trimming! Thanks again!
Great, exactly what I wanted to hear. To the point care! Thank you
Great tips! Thank you
I love you! There are so many times your videos are my go to ones lol. Thank you for existing! 😍❤😻🌱🍀🌿
Wow! thank you so much. I am incredibly honored by that.

Omgosh thankyou!! I know now why my leaves are crispy and its about 24” tall so i gotta trim!!🎉 thank you i just subscribed!!
Perfect info great video
This is my favorite plant because I thought it was so hilarious how it wilts but springs back up instantly with water. mine grew rapidly and became long and many-armed. But then my roommates kittenn ate most of her arms. She only has left. A year later and she really hasn't improved. I just repotted her to a smaller pot this weekend. I hope she grows. :(
Thank you this video is genuinely helpful.
I needed help so thank you. My polka dot is so leggy that in the last week I have 4 to 6 leaves left on the tops of 7 stems, didn't know what was happening. I plan to cut them back and begin again, hopefully in the next 2 weeks I'll have roots and restart this journey again. Going for the busy look.
Thank you for the tips❤
Such pretty plants. Really helpful video :)
Thanks so much for watching!
Excellent tips, thanks
This was so helpful! I've had a polka dot for about a month and it's grown SO much! It's so leggy tho, and leaves are turing yellow!! Now I know how to fix it lol! Thank you!!!

Harli to cool....my local big box store sells many of the little guys you talk about...gonna run out and get a couple varieties right now!...love your hair...
Thank you so much! Yay! They are such fun plants (:
Hi Harli, Thank you so much for the video. I am new to house plants and finding your channel very helpful especially since my polka dot plant started wilting today (hopefully she springs back up). You mentioned posting a video on how and when to trim it. My plant is starting to get leggy and would love to see how it is done properly.
Keep. Up good work. Love. Plant🌹
I just got a polka dot plant a little over a month ago. I sat it in a northast facing window1-2 ft behind a sheer curtain. Wow- it grew fast but leggy. Also, its pretty white dots are fading:( Have moved it out of the sun to a mantle nearby. Will be propagating it today. Praying it works 💪🏾 Thank you for your helpful tips! #newsubscriber
Thank you Harli :)....I have found your video.s totally inspiring...Even life changing for some of us...Now...All my house plants(quite a few) have had a new lease of life and i LOVE them even more....Best wishes

I just bought my first Real Plant and I’m so glad I found this channel. Love the videos 💗
Yay! thank you so much. Congrats on your first plant. They bring about a joy that nothing else ever could. I can't quite explain it though, I'm sure you know what I mean :P
Yes indeed, it was very helpful. Thanks
These grow wild in my garden 😄 the ones in shade are purple (when they get about 30cm they make purple, triangle-petaled, compact flowers) and the ones in bright sun are a light pink. I bought a red one today and I'm going to introduce it to the ecosystem.
That’s cool but some species might be invasive in your area so check on that before introducing new plants
Excellent video! My leaves are browning at the tips and falling off. I wonder if the potting soil I chose is too high in fertilizer 😢
My little guy was doing great until he got left out in the sun too long before I realized he needed water. He was definitely a dramatic little thing and wilted even if he had plenty of water lol. He was flowering and everythingI soaked him and nothing was left but dead dried branches and was gonna throw it away but thankfully I noticed there was one little live branch left so I uprooted it and trimmed the roots away all except for a little ball of roots directly under the little branch and so I repotted it and am anxiously waiting for him to pull through lol
Did it pull through?
Gooodd lucckk!!
i need an update on this it’s been 7 months 😫
Next time you should put that last little stem into some water. It's a great last resort.
Sorry guys! It didn’t pull through but I have a new one ordered and it should be arriving soon
Very informative video, thank you,for your help. Just got one of these plants from my mom, and now it is blooming pretty purple flowers. Thanks again.
