  • A travelogue but for sewing , knitting and a handmade life. I share my journeys with making things, offer instruction or advice based on my own experiences, explain how and why I started making things, and discuss how #sustainablesewing is an alternative to the #fastfashion crisis.
Some of my childhood memories are of my grandmother knitting in her rocking chair; her big cookie tin filled with buttons; my mom's sewing machine whirring at night, the times she had me cut pattern pieces or thread needles; the impressive bedroom decor, plush toys, and clothing she made. At the time, I didn't take to the knitting and sewing the way she and the other women in my family did. I didn't have the patience to sit still and mostly came in handy for having -at the time - the best eyesight and the ability to crawl under things where tools might have been dropped. I spent long hours being bored at fabric stores while my mom checked out patterns and fabric (I think I may have napped in one of the bolt bins). How many times when shopping in A&S department store did she cluck at the price and mutter, "I could make that". My clothes were primarily hand me downs, mended, and things she made. By my teens I uttered a horrible thing to my mom: "can I please just get something from the store?!" at that time I started having babysitting money and other jobs so I could buy my own clothes. Her sewing machine and patterns were very precious to her even when I didn't hear it running much any more.
Fast forward many years: my mom and grandmother were long gone and I was pregnant with my first child. I was driving home from my teaching job on a route I traveled many times passing the same shopping complex but on this day, I noticed the AC Moore sign and it was like something came over me as I hit the turn signal into the parking lot. Not even knowing what I was doing I wandered through the craft store aisles picking up yarn and needles and a few instructional booklets. I left with the materials to make a baby blanket, and after my daughter was born, my husband bought me a sewing machine for my birthday. That was thirteen years ago and this has been the greatest journey for so many reasons. I want to tell you all about it, but you have to subscribe to make sure you don't miss anything!
