Hi @The Long Way there, Nice videos. You have done a great job and been a great help.. Did you figure out if it was right or wrong to install the gasket.. I have a 1987 R80RT and an about to reassemble the final drive. Additionally, do you have the torque specs for the 8 bolts, as I can not find that in my Haynes manual? Would really appreciate an answer.. Thanks a ton // Chris

Hi Chris. Thanks for your comments. I’ve had no problems regarding the gasket. I spoke with an experienced guy at my BMW specialist and he said it was supposed to have a gasket - plus there’s a gasket in the exploded view in my Clymer manual so I’m going with that. Speaking of Clymer manuals, according to that the 8 cover bolts have a torque setting of 18-22 Nm or 13 -16 ft-lbs if you’re Stateside. Hope that helps. 👍

Great video and great info! I have a question. I have a 1978 r100/7 and I'm looking to convert it to a monoshock setup. Would this r80 mono shock swing arm fit the r100/7? If not, are there any major modifications that need to be done? Thanks in advance.

Hi Daniel. Great question. Sadly I don’t know the answer. I’ve seen a couple of CZcams videos of people converting the dual shock swing arm to take a single shock but not one that swaps out the swing arm itself. There are a few good Facebook Airhead forums that are a fount of knowledge on such topics so I recommend asking on one of those. Good luck 👍

By using a gasket surely you have now affected the shimming and reduced the loading of the tapered roller?

Susan Palmer hmmmm good point well made. I checked with my BMW man and also looked at the official parts database for this unit. There’s definitely supposed to be a gasket in there. I can only assume it’s been apart before and had some form of liquid gasket applied. I’ll just have to check for play regularly once it’s back on the road. Thanks for your comment.

@@TheLongWayThereUK Did you have to re-shim the gear once you put the .010'' (0.254 mm) gasket under the cover?

Where did you get the manual? Any recommendations?

Danson Cappo it’s a Clymer manual. Usually available on eBay. Search bmw clymer airhead. That usually brings them up.

How much was it for the final drive disassembly?

Jacob Wood. I paid a bench fee (£10 I think) at a local place for the driveshaft spring to be decompressed - 5 minute job with the right tool - which allows disassembly. The bevel drive i did myself with a new gasket from Motorworks. Hope that helps.
