    You're the first person I've seen cut the tube flat. This is exactly what I was going to do. Looks much better this way.

    Well done Clint! Not only does it cover the entire chain stay but it is super quiet....... A quiet bike is a happy bike!

    Ive used this method on my mtbs. I take off the crankset and start wrapping from the very front of the chainstay behind where the chainrings would be. I only use one zip tie hidden behind the chainrings and use rubber cement (tube patch stuff) to glue the tube to itself under tension, Clamping it while it dries. I wrap some black electrical tape around the edge of the last wrap to keep dirt from driving under. End result looks super clean!

  • @hjohn2
    @hjohn2 Před 7 lety +3

    I always wrap mine from back to front... helps shed water and mud as you're moving. Another hint is to start the wrap about an inch forward of the covered area, double back one wrap and proceed forward... makes a really clean end.

    As soon as I saw this on your gravel bikes, I wanted to try it. So I threw it on my Revolt, and its perfect. Thanks again, and as far as the looks of it. I think it looks rugged, personally.

    I've done this since 1986. I over-wrap the rubber with black electrical tape so it's waterproof and looks better. No cable ties needed.

    I found a beautiful hack, I used road bike handlebar wrap, one it's light weight, and two it looks great, readily available in multiple color schemes, I wrap front to back I tend to use cork because it's weather resistant, and easy to deal with, the reason I wrap front to back if the chain does slap it won't tear it due to the direction the chain is traveling, I'm trying to figure out how to attach a photo so I can show you just how nice it looks, hope you get this and share it

  • @MarzNet256
    @MarzNet256 Před 8 lety +1

    You can cut the cable ties with a pair of toe nail clippers. It leaves a nice rounded cut with no sharp edges.

    Just did this on my hybrid bike (maybe overkill?) and it worked out quite well may I say. I did notice though that there's very little clearence between the rubber and the chain when it's on the 10th gear on my 10-speed casette. Shouldn't bother me though. Nice :D

    My rear derailleur cable runs under the chainstay and is it okey to wrap electrical tape over it or should I remove cable first then apply the tape or the inner tube?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  Před 7 lety

      +Jonny Nevanranta don't wrap anything around an exposed inner wire. But if it's full cable housing along the chain stay it's okay.

    Hi Clint.
    I have realized that you have 2 of these on your anthem 27.5 1. One on the chain stay and one on the top of the rear triangle. Any reason why? Also, don't you get the giant branded ones that come with the bike. I got one with my anthem and is cut out such so you can see the logo on the chai stay while still protecting from chain slap.
    Thanks

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  Před 9 lety

      I don't have anything else on my Anthem frame other than the chainstay protector on the chainstay.

    • @MrAwsomeness777
      @MrAwsomeness777 Před 9 lety

      Ok I worded it wrong. Look at your how to build a 1x10 drivetrain video then go to 5:26. There is like a tape on the frame. What is that?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  Před 9 lety

      MrAwsomeness777 That's frame-saver tape that I get from Colorado Cyclist. Kind of pricey but does a great job on vulnerable areas of the frame. I also use it under the down tube.

    • @MrAwsomeness777
      @MrAwsomeness777 Před 9 lety

      Clint Gibbs oh ok. I'm going to look into that. But I swear I saw one of your bikes in a video of yours with the inner tube protector on 2 parts. I might just be me but I'm gonna keep searching in your videos.
      Thanks

    Looks like you replaced the BSB9 with a TCX Advanced - a 2015 model judging from the paintwork. How has it served you?
    I've got the aluminum version, the TCX SLR 2, with front and rear QRs. Mine's a year older. Cross racing is pretty much non-existent where I live, so I use mine as an all-weather commuter road bike.

      @TypeVertigo Před 9 lety

      Ah, 2016! So that's why the livery looks a bit different. It doesn't seem like Giant made huge changes to the frame from the two previous years, though. Anyway, will look forward to your first-look video of it. Cheers.

    what if the cables are under the chianstay and not in the frame? how can i avoid messing with the shifting? do i have to put less pressure? i know im a bit late (5 years) but could you maybe answer?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  Před 3 lety

      If it's continuous cable housing you're fine. But if it's the older style where you have exposed inner wire under the chainstay then you would not be able to do this.

    Whats wrong with a little chain slap? Are you trying to protect the paint of a new bike? Or is chain slap bad for the chain?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  Před 7 lety +1

      +UrbanBoondocker mainly protecting the carbon finish of the bike. It is especially important on a carbon bike since repetitive hits on a carbon frame can eventually weaken it.

    Not a good idea to clamp the frame with the stand, clamp the seatpost instead, could crush the carbon frame. Just a heads up.

  • @jairdabrini

    Isn't moist an issue on the frame wrapping rubber around it like that? Besides the ugly look?
    The benefit with neoprene is it breathes, dries fast and are easily removeable and reattachable.
    I do agree with those who think Lizard Skins are made too thin, on my last bike I had really good and thick neoprene covers on both chainstay arms that even prevented stone chips from damaging the enemal paint. Lizard Skin should make their neoprene covers thicker, longer (1,5 cm) and wider (1-1,5 cm) with wider velcro also.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  Před 8 lety

      +jairdabrini I've been using this for years and have never had an issue with moisture. Like I said in the video, the look is not for everyone.

    • @jairdabrini
      @jairdabrini Před 8 lety

      +Clint Gibbs yeah, it's a really cheap solution even if you haven't got a used or useless tube lying around. It's probably looks that will keep alot of people from finding out how effective this solution really is.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  Před 8 lety

      Plus it's bike security... people are less apt to steal it :)

    • @jairdabrini
      @jairdabrini Před 8 lety

      Maybe in your head they are. I think if your bike gets stolen or not depends more on where and how you lock your bike up and the value of it and its parts, how easy it will be to fence etc. This home made chainstay protector is ugly but it still easily removable so it doens't degrade the bikes value.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  Před 8 lety +1

      I've yet to find a protector that covers the entire chain stay. I'm the kind of person that cares more about my phone being protected that what the case looks. I guess it's the same with my bikes. Like I said, it's not for everyone.
