  • In June 2022, Thomas and I took the School for International Expedition Training's 12-day high-altitude ski mountaineering course in the Cordillera Blanca led by Josh Beckner. We flew into Lima and then took a bus to Huaraz where we stayed for a week to acclimate. We hiked up to Yanapaccha base camp and spent several more days acclimating and practicing skills on the glacier. Once acclimated, we skied Yanapaccha (5,460m/17,910ft) on June 24 and Vallunaraju (5,686m/18,655ft) on June 28 as part of the course and then continued to Pisco (5,752m/18,871ft) on July 1 and Ishinca (5,530m/18,140ft) on July 4 after the course. Many thanks to Josh for leading the course, Thomas and Daniel for being great partners, Cirilo for his amazing papas y huevos, and Luchito the donkey and Rosita the horse for carrying our gear to Ishinca base camp!

Great video and nice commitment to do some peaks of the Cordillera Blanca with skis! I went there last year, some of the most beautiful mountains I've ever seen! Unfortunately I was there without my snowboard, so maybe I have to come back one day to ride some lines :)

Fantastic video, first location, glad I wasn’t there. Second, much better. Third and fourth location are OK but a lot of work. Glad you did it!

Great video! I met you guys in the base camp of Yanapaccha where I tried to ski as well but had to return due to bad weather. Looks like you found some amazing weather on all mountains, great job! Next time bring your skins, much easier since most of these mountains can be skinned most of the way.

Ah yes I remember you two, you were the only other skiers we saw the whole trip! Bummer the weather didn't work out on Yana, did you get a chance for some other summits?

@@LaneAasen We climbed and skied Pisco where the weather unfortunately changed for the worse when we reached the summit, still a great adventure though. I skied Vallunaraju and Caullaraju a few years ago. Last December I went to Ecuador and skied Cayambe and Antisana, guess you would enjoy skiing there too. Skiing in the high Andes is something special if you'd ask me. Do you still have any particular objective in mind?

Mix of Sony RX100 VII, GoPro Hero 10, and iPhone. I usually use a Sony A7C as well but decided not to bring it on this trip

How exposed/ steep was the pitch where you went on belay?

Over 50 degrees with a large crevasse underneath. I could see it being skiable in softer conditions, but on hard ice, not worth the risk!
