  • Welcome to a new build. I had this end section of a piece of butternut that had some wild grain but had a big crack that made the last 8" unusable. So over the years, whenever I had leftover black epoxy from different projects, I would fill in the crack until I finally filled it all in. This would make a great topper for a cane! So here we are... I take you on the steps to make the cane topper from butternut, a white oak transition piece and a 7/8" shaft to make an easy to make, but beautiful cane all done with hand tools.
    Enjoy the video and as always, leave me a comment and I'll answer as soon as possible.

      @@JasonHedrich I, too dabble in making canes and shillelaghs and traditional dance regalia (warclubs, staffs). And after all the various canes, clubs, shillelaghs, etc. that I've seen online, I have to say that this and the Canadian Shillelagh are easily the most beautiful work I've seen. You have a great eye as well as a huge creative streak.
      P.S. I'm a fellow Canadian, eh

    Beautiful work, Jason. Love the how the epoxy seems to flow like a river through the butternut grain. Keep on, keeping on!

    Recently added epoxy resin to my stick making repertoire and I'm thinking it'll be a game changer.

      It does add a different look to the standard wood topper. And the Color selections let’s you customize the final look of the piece

    Used your layout process for two Celtic weave staffs this winter. Easy peasy! One question…why do you use a vice instead of a shave horse when working on cylindrical crafts?

    • @JasonHedrich
      @JasonHedrich  Před 4 měsíci

      Great, glad you were able to complete the design! I use a vice because it’s on my workbench, I simply don’t have room to have a shave horse as well as a workbench. I use my workbench for many other projects so I choose to go with the universal workbench and skip a dedicated shave horse. But I agree, that a shave horse would probably hold my sticks better than the small vice.

    Hi Jason, I'm new to stick making and fancy having a go at this, could you tell me exactly what rasp file you were using, great video by the way.

      Great to hear! I would start with a half round wood rasp… that will do just about anything you need. Also Kutzall makes great wood rasps as well. Good luck with your build!
