- Israel's ambassador to the United Nations has launched a scathing attack on the General Assembly following a vote to call a ceasefire in Gaza.
The United Nations general assembly has overwhelmingly called for an immediate “humanitarian truce” between Israel and Hamas (Peter Chappell writes).
The resolution, which was drafted by Arab states, is not binding but carries political weight, taking the global temperature as Israel steps up its ground operations in Gaza.
It passed with 120 votes in favour, while 45 nations abstained - among them the UK - and 14 voted no, including Israel and the United States.
A humanitarian truce, distinct from a ceasefire, would allow aid to reach Palestinian civilians caught up in the violence.

Why should Israel be held to a different standard, although they do hold themselves to a better, if far from perfect, standard.

The Israelis do not wilfully target unarmed people and babies for assassination, probably the only military organisation that doesn’t. Israel cannot protect their people if they cannot defeat the terrorist group called Hamas and indeed Hezbollah and their backers. Hamas keeps the gazan people in poverty and under attack from Israel to keep them as useful idiots for their cult and uses the people as human shields whilst the top Hamas leadership lives is safety and luxury in Beirut, Istanbul and Doha. It is impossible to destroy Hamas and not risk the people, either willingly or unwillingly, acting as shields. The “rules” of war (oxymoronic at best) allows a nation to defend itself and in so doing put civilians at risk under such conditions but not to wilfully target such civilians, although how easy is it to separate civilian and combatant? Did the Nazis or Imperial Japan do it in WW2, did the Allies when they carpet bombed Dresden and other cities and dropped not 1 but 2 nuclear bombs on Japan? Did the Chinese or Western powers in Korea and Vietnam, Did the Russians in Ukraine? No! Why should Israel be held to a different standard, although they do hold themselves to a better, if far from perfect, standard.
Unless you agree with Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran and Syria (and likely more) and all those stupidity naive so called students in the West chanting “from the river to the sea” that Israel has no right to exist and they must be exterminate in a genocide, in which case you are an enemy of humanity, then you cannot deny Israel to do what it takes to defeat Hamas and all existential threats to its people, which is what they will do whether you approve or not and rightly so because which people would say to their government, “no it’s ok, let them kill us all”?
