  • On this day in 1963, President John F. Kennedy spoke in Berlin. Here is a British Movietone report from his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner” speech.
"I am proud to come to this city as the guest of your distinguished Mayor who has symbolized throughout the world the fighting spirit of West Berlin. Two thousand years ago the proudest boast was quivest romanius somum, today the proudest boast is Ich Bein Ein Berliner. There are many people in the world who really don't understand, or say they don't, what is the great issue between the free world and the communist world. Let them come to Berlin. There are some who see all communism as the wave of the future, let them come to Berlin. There are some who say, in Europe and elsewhere, we can work with the communists, let them come to Berlin." "Freedom has many difficulties and democracy is not perfect, but we have never had to put a wall up to keep our people in, to prevent them from leaving us. Real lasting peace in Europe can never be assured as long as one German out of four is denied the elementary right of free men and that is to make a free choice. In eighteen years of peace and good faith this generation of Germans has earned the right to be free, including the right to unite their families, their nation in lasting peace with goodwill to all men." John F Kennedy was Racist. As Senator, Kennedy fully supported the Racist Southern Democrats in opposing two Civil Rights Bills written by REPUBLICAN Civil Rights Leader Dwight D. Eisenhower, who also gave African American, Hispanic, Native American and Asian minorities in the Military their equal and civil rights in 1942, that would have given All African Americans Equal and Civil Rights in 1957 and again in 1959 - He also refused to let Sammy Davis Jr. perform in the white house and he constantly used N ~ in private. JFK was clearly Racist, just like TRUMP and BIDEN ~ vote #BradHartliep #President, the only candidate for President who will deliver Equality and Justice to Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans and America's Poor ..

That's not the whole speech. It's missing: "All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin. And therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words, Ich bin ein Berliner.'
I'll remember that part to my last breath.

He was a one off. It has been said by those who knew JFK that he had so much charisma, he could light up a room.

Ich bin ein Berliner translates as I am a doughnut He should have said Ich Bin Berliner.

Doesn't make a difference either way. "Ich bin ein Kölner/Ich bin Kölner" is the same. Also the type of doughnut you're referencing isn't usually called Berliner in Berlin. There are 4 or 5 different names for it in different parts of Germany.
I doubt people hat difficulty understanding what he meant ;)
