    I switched to Engineering Management from Software Engineering (also FAANG) 3 years ago and don't regret it at all. Sure, I don't code anymore which was actually one of my strongest skills but I LOVE 'building people' now instead of building software. You can do so much with the right support and I believe there are not enough empathetic managers in the industry.

      Absolutly agree. Without the right set of charachter to develop individuals, one will fail as a manager! More power to you 😄

    I became an EM for 6 months (switched back to IC after that), my main job was planning releases, figuring out high level architecture for all the features etc. apart from that delegating work to the right people, guiding developers with R&D escalations, 1:1's and performance reviews. Had no other work. My Sr. EM kept telling me if you are overworked as an EM you are micromanaging. I got my team to do all the writeups/anything that came from business/product. Literally switched back as I felt I was doing nothing

      You feel that way, becz you equate doing anything with coding and building.

    Contribution in team members growth got little mention in your role. This means your role is a team lead kind of...you are yet to become a manager. Did you have a emplyee signal survey yet? A people manager must prioritize employee growth and invest at least 50% of their time in this. Helping team members in cross tram collaboration, coaching, mentoring, having regular 1:1 with then etc. should be prioritized by team managers. Ideallt managers would get seniors, principles in their team who would assist them on technical stuff.

    cool content, but wrt work life balance SDEs suffer much more bcoz they cannot delegate the work which managers can do.

    • @SoumyajitBhattacharyay
      @SoumyajitBhattacharyay  Před rokem

      Not necessarily if you are the one who is giving the estimate of the work that you will be doing then there should not be any work life balance issues! And managers delegate the work that an sde is supposed to do to an sde. That anyways the manager is not supposed to do. 🙂 there are a lot of other things as mentioned here and in the comments that one needs to do as a manger

    basically a SDM is someone who acts like a product manager but with more tech than PMs (or simply PM with tech) 😁

    Manager at Amazon is just the worst form of Job. You just become document writer and good at creating toxicity. Nothing else, I came out of it immediately. It spoils your career, you lose all touch from technolo and do crap stuff .
