You talk about level design but fail to mention the *intentional* sequence break options created by the developers in zero mission that opened up MANY interesting play through experiences.
Other than that the review seemed pretty spot on.
I personally never sequenced break in Zero Mission (I think), but when recently replaying Super Metroid, I was amazed that I could go anywhere I wanted after a certain point basically while powering up and beating the bosses. Super Metroid is just the best game of all time.
I hope this here will be a fun episode, I expect it to be a bit like Fusion or AM2R. AM2R was excellent.
Brinestar? Never heard Brinstar pronounced like that before.
Zey-bas, Brinestar, Samus Aaron...
This guy has no idea how to pronounce things.
What? You never heard of brinestar? Its an alternate area found on zebes just like brinstar, but instead of lava and acid, theres pickle juice.
I don't understand this review, you talk about level design but ignore large parts of it, and then even ignore everything you've previously said with a hand-wavy "Samus Returns has teleporters so therefore its level design is way better than Zero Mission's". Zero Mission was a more compact game all around and didn't really need teleporters, it was much easier to get a bearing on the shape of the levels and traverse them from memory. Plus, the levels were just far more interesting and varied in Zero Mission as a whole, and even had built-in routes to sequence break and skip items (which were essential for the hidden challenge low% runs in the game), and the world connected up more neatly than in Samus Returns. I play a lot of metroidvanias, and the level design in Zero Mission is why that game is still in my top 3 next to Axiom Verge and Super Metroid. Level design should have gone to Zero Mission, there's no contest there. Heck, having Zero Mission for comparison is basically the reason why I can't help but feel a little disappointed by Samus Returns, even though it's a great game.
For the other parts I mostly agree though, music definitely goes to Samus Returns, and I'll even begrudgingly give gameplay to Samus Returns even though I personally prefer Zero Mission by a little bit. If it's not obvious, I really like Zero Mission and, for me, it wins this vs. by a lot.
Dude I LOVE zero mission but all of us need to recognize when a game is better than the other one
@@simonib7022 Solid argument. Somebody on the internet blew off everything I said with a "just agree that this game is better", how is that supposed to change my mind?
Zero Mission has really good level and world design, and Samus Returns has good level design and bad world design. Metroidvanias shouldn't be a linear path of areas, and Samus Returns just kept Metroid 2's crappy world design and patched it up with teleporters. It's a band-aid fix, they should've just remade the whole world.
Just because you like one game more than the other doesn't make every single part of it better.
@@GeneralBrwni 3 things
1 you are right they only used a band aid
2 if they changed the world it wouldnt be a remake I believe
3 I literally said that i prefer zero mission
@@simonib7022 You did not literally say that you prefer Zero Mission, you said you LOVE zero mission but all of us need to recognize when a game is better than the other one, the word "but" pretty strongly implying that you think that Samus Returns is the game that we need to recognize as the better one. Since I really value world design, I don't think I really agree with that.
If it still took place on the same planet with the same basic story, but changed the world to be more connected, I'd still call it a remake. It might not be as faithful to the original as the game we got, but that'd probably be for the better considering all of Metroid 2's flaws.
"Level Design - Metroid Samus Returns"
Pretty much just turned the video off at that point. Just because it has teleporters? That's one of the most shallow reasons to prefer SR, and completely undersells the brilliant ZM level design which had many alternate routes for low % runners.
Honestly I have a poor opinion about Samus returns because of a lot of things around the game and love zero mission partially because it was the first game I played but it’s also a great game
@Craig Adams more like I disagreed with his reasoning so much that I figure the rest of the video would have similarly flimsy reasoning.
@@cosmiclikesminecraft It just generally gets worse. How can Gameplay win? 360 aiming and aeon abilities? But Series Staples like the Speed Booster removed. 360 aiming is kinda shite when you think about it. Enemies had to be designed around that so the metroids just fly above you like target practice because guess what... You have to stand still completely while aiming. This alters the entire gameplay flow drastically and is the reason they had to include meele counters, for sure. Also Aeon Abilities add next to nothing to your arsenal. The time slower is even pretty useless and only of use for arbitrary badly designed puzzles that force you to fail first before knowing that you need to use the ability. Also I really took my time on that one... Really much so without a Guide my first run which was 100% took me 8 hours. So I'm just wondering what he did half of the time, especially considering he rated it on 100% basis but didn't 100% Zero Mission... Biased as fuck, flawed and shallow reasoning.
1: Yup
2: Hell no
3: I can get behind that
4: Yeah
5: OH HELLLLLL NAW
Wow. You gave the Music part to Samus Returns despite not even talking about the music of Zero Mission- which is much better despite the lack of quality sound hardware found in the GBA.
they both have great music honestly and I cant decide which one had better music
can you remake this video after
yknow
actually playing zero mission
The music in Zero Mission is way more memorable, whereas the music of Samus Returns is generic apart from 1 o 2 themes, but it won just for the main theme? -.-
Samus Returns had something called ambient music. A lot of Metroid Primes music used the same type, same with Super Metroid. They weren't blaring nothing but catchy tunes like Fusion, M1/Zero Mission. Al though it did have it's fair share of it. The ambient music made Samus Returns be the most atmospheric Metroid since Metroid Prime and Super Metroid.
@@TheBrutalSax wait, have you even played fusion? It has the most ambient and backgroundy soundtrack of the entire series (although I personally think Super has a better OST.) I definitely agree that ZM's soundtrack is pretty underwhelming when it comes to atmosphere and mood, though.
@@BenjaminAnderson21 have I played fusion?
Bro where do you think the “sax” in my name comes from??? I don’t play the saxophone so it definitely ain’t that.
@@TheBrutalSax Okay, it just weird to me that you referred to Fusion as "blaring nothing but catchy tunes" when in fact, it has the most ambient soundtrack in the entire 2d series.
@@BenjaminAnderson21 yeah idk why I said “nothing but catchy tunes” back then. That’s just silly, hardly any game even has that
I really love Zero Mission, it was my first Metroid game back in the day. The zero suit section is tense and unique, and getting your gravity suit and screw attack back is such a power trip.
Are you serious? I thought samus returns was a great remake, just beat it yesterday but it does not have anything on zero mission. ZM is about as perfect as a remake can be, it is what all other video game remakes should aspire to be. Samus returns does so much hand holding like the aeon ability to scan secrets which totally destroys the job of exploration, not to mention the repetitive and uninspiring boss fights.
Yeah, one thing I didn't like about these bosses is that they were more "wait until the enemy is ready to be hurt before you attack." In Zero Mission, the bosses just kept attacking and you had to keep attacking back. There was definitely a difference between the two games' boss fights. I definitely prefer Zero Mission's
The secret scanner doesn't destroy exploration, it just helps you find some of the stranger secrets, which is exactly why they give a similar ability in super metroid, and allow you to see any breakable blocks after using a power bomb in both ZM and Fusion
electricvolpe Um, you do realize that Scan Pulse is purely optional, right?
@@fredjones2170 The thing is, when given the option to cut corners, who wouldn't take it? Masochists?
When you're not given the choice, you have to rely on your own intuition to find secrets.
@@mcihay246 Yeah but SR doesn't even give you a map like Zero mission or Super. Scan Pulse is your way of building the map. It's a trade off, not a crutch.
They remade the first Metroid game as well as the second. Can you imagine if they attempted to remade Metroid 3: Super Metroid? The amount of work do to so to remake the game as well as adding new stuff could take a few years.
Wow these are gross oversimplifications of gameplay and level design. Samus Returns is cute, but it doesn't even come close to ZM in either of these categories.
It would surely make roe sense to compare Metroid: Samus Returns to Metroid II: Return of Samus?
Samus Returns < Metroid Zero Mission
9:03 Hey don't you go dissing my Dark Souls. I know that of all the things I'm taking from this video shouldn't be that, but still. If you want something more constructive, difficulty in games isn't easily defined, whether it's by number of deaths or punishment for failure. Samus Returns will see you die in brutal sections, but it's checkpoint system is designed to keep you safe from refighting a metroid or going through an earlier challenge. Instead it let's you continue on from what killed you. Dark Souls will also be aggressive, but often when you're next to a checkpoint to make your life easier. When you die far away from a bonfire, it's often a much easier area and you simply lost by attrition, or there are shortcuts you can find the next time around to quicken the backtrack. Of course DS 2 had major shortcomings with this, and Demon Souls didn't care at all, but DS 1 & 3 both created a much fairer system.
Now I'm sure when you said that you meant you die less is Samus Returns, which is also true, but Samus Returns is also a much shorter game with a much different philosophy on dying in the game. Dark Souls is designed to give you a sense of fulfillment for doing something hard knowing that failure meant a little misery. It's helps make the victory feel more impactful. The only time that happens in Samus Returns are the 3 bosses. Otherwise the difficulty comes from the desire to make the planet feel hostile and the metroids feel like a real danger.
It's almost funny to me to hear Zero Mission called a 5/6 hour game. I've played it so many times I can 100% in about 2 and a half hours, and a bunch of people online can make that look like a casual time. Zero Mission has a certain.... flow I don't think will EVERY be topped personally, because it was the most sequence breakable Metroid game I've ever played, and anyone could do it even. Anyway, to the real star of the show here, I'm CRAZY excited to get my copy Friday after work. I've been playing the rest of the series as personal hype. While clearly I'm wanting more new games (Maybe even a restart of Project Dread?), part of me also would ADORE Super Metroid being touched up in this game engine, if not Fusion and Zero mission as well. It would be fairly cheap for Nintendo as most of the ground work is there having already made the core game engine, just would need graphics and music, maybe a few new features for things like the X, and it would just be awesome to see places like the depth of Zebes, the crashed ship, and even the BSL station with these graphics.
Wow Samus Returns won music because of *a single song* what a cop out
well it is his opinion, if he likes Samus Returns more because of one song that's his prerogative.
and the lack of an in depth look at the zero mission level design. Zero mission level design is legitimately the best in the series and will probably stay that way forever.
to be fair, music IS a big part of a metroid game, try playing any metroid game that has audio settings and turn of the music, big difference i assure you
!! You mean to tell me you didn't like the Surface of SR388 theme?! That song is unironically amazing!
Hope you enjoyed this Metroid duel, our new channel intro and are ready for the next two episodes which will be Super Mario 64 VS Super Mario Sunshine and the Winner of this one VS Super Mario Odyssey!
Not sure it should be 64 v sunshine. Maybe 64 v galaxy, since those are the best of the 3D marios according to fans/critics.
Fourteen hours for a Metroid game...
*YES*
thatquirkyredhead Same, most 2D metroid games can be completed under 10 hours (Except Super for me, since i got lost) so 14 is pretty good.
The complestionist finished it in 8 hours on his first go and he 100% completed it. This guy is just really slow
I'm 3 hours in and at 12% dude it's easy to get lost as fuck for hours.
GT6SuzukaTimeTrials I'm picking my copy up from Walmart tomorrow and I can't WAIT to get lost as fuck for hours!
It's also important to point out that it doesn't track loading times or retries, as my copy says I was in-game for 15 hours, but my 3DS activity log says 32 hours.
Back tracking in samus return is a chore even there is a teleporter, and you have to unlock the baby metriod to complete the game
They should make a Metroid: Fusion sequel next.
@Sabertooth Thats what I was saying Metroid 5 would be a sequel to Fusion. I wasn't talking about remake/ remasters.
Zero Mission hands down on all of those metrics.
Funny how these fanboys are defending amiibos but if it were another company doing it....Oh boy
Actually, I think that people would accept it from other companies and people act harshly against nintendo, since nintendo is trying to get a way to earn revenue for a game with an additional purchase
oh good im not the only one who took 14+ hrs to finish Samus Returns 3DS....
but man i love fighting arachneus in both fusion and samus returns, he's one of my fave bosses.
Donkey Kong Country Returns, Metroid Samus Returns. I'm glad both of these Nintendo Franchises have made big Returns.
That intro tho 👀👌
Zeltik pls do a video on sheik oot Loz he is my favorite character (I thinks sheiks a boy)
Zeltik which is unnecessarily long and has no relevance to the rest of the vid.
d-dd-did he just say... Brine-star?
I wanted to see other bosses in Samus Returns as well. Serris could have been a wonderful addition and a nice call back to Fusion. I also wanted a little more creature/enemy variety than seeing the same creatures with different variants, which is something AM2R did very well. I honestly prefer AM2R more than the official remake for the sheer variety when it comes to the areas and creatures. I genuinely do like SR, and I'm actually having fun with Fusion Mode.
Zero mission also explains why the ghost ship is now on zebes...;)
Good Video Idea! Normal Reviews will be everywhere...
>"Brinestar"
>"At least it's not as hard as Dark Souls :^)"
>"Hardest Metroid game I've ever played"
>Diggernaut, *FINAL BOSS REDACTED*, Arachnus, Metroid Queen, Omega and Zeta metroids somehow not at least competition for Kraid, Ridley and Mother Brain
...at least he criticized the amiibo shit?
Wish Samus Returns was 2D instead of 3D, I just dont like how it looks on the 3DS
Good looking intro guys!
Samus Returns VS Zero Mission
Winner: AM2R
aaaaaaaah im playing through AM2R the omega Metroids are so hard aaaaaaaaaaa
Getting the gravity suit in zero mission always makes me weep
One thing about the gameplay on both of them is they removed the speed booster on Samus Returns. On Zero Mission you had to do those shinespark tricks to get all the items. That drove me nuts in Zero Mission since I like to 100% games that I play.
It takes all sorts... the things you loved about Samus returns I saw as compromises to make up for failings in the core design (teleporter/ chozo locks) but glad to see it is landing with a lot of fans.
9:08 since when has dark souls ever been considered an unfair game... by anyone?
By the same people who call it the hardest game ever. A lot of people unfortunately
About the music, when I recognized Norfair and Maridia themes from SM in Samus Returns I went from "this game is really good" to "This is what I wanted and didn't even know". They did a pretty good job there.
7: 27 Willy Wonka: "Tell me more about your trip through BRINEstar."
I feel like it would make more sense to compare it to the original or AM2R
A Freaking Sandwich There's already another youtuber that does that. Search "Remake or Rebreak" on CZcams.
Once completed Zero Mission in like an hour and 15 minutes
Also would prolly get Samus Returns if it came to switch with better graphics, but having to buy another console is off putting
New Metroid Samus Returns Deluxe Remaster all DLC included amiibo support only for Nintendo Switch Switch lite and later editions game and amiibo not to be sold seperately
Now...AM2R vs Samus Returns XD lol
I can't agree, while AM2R is amazing in its own right, its a fangame, its made for nostalgia, it doesnt take the series anywhere new, and ultimately adds nothing. Now I'm yet to play Samus Returns since it comes out tomorrow, but overall from what I've seen Samus Returns is a true sequel and not just a remake for nostalgia sake.
When DoctorM64 likes the official remake more than his own but fanboys are too salty to acknowledge that. Samus Returns is better. AM2R was great and all, but at least this is trying to push the series forward.
Hey hey hey! Where are people getting that i hate Nintendo? I was simply asking a question lol i love AM2R and im sure that Samus Returns will live up to the legacy of Metro is and I'm more than excited that Nintendo decided to continue the franchise as a whole. Why can't we be fans of both games? I agree that AM2R doesn't add anything to the formula but the tight controls and faithfulness of AM2R to the source material is commendable at the least, even if it doesn't push the series forward by much/at all since its a fan game. I was just saying it'd be interesting to see an unbiased opinion comparing the two.
Ray Luna
Im not trashing AM2R, that's just my opinion as to which one I prefer as of now.
people need to make up thier mind about amiibo. at first people compained they didn't have enough functionality. now they are complaining about it being a paywall...
amiibo arent inherently negative or positive. it depends what they do. some Amiibo are unique functionality, smash being a good example. that could be not done with out amiibo. this is a great use of amiibo. there is also non offensive stuff which just makes the game easier such as SMM, Monster Hunter Stories or fire emblem fates, its stuff that can be obtained without amiibo, but its easier to just scan a figure. not great but not bad. then there's stuff which is straight up dlc. Botw and splatoon come to mind, this is terrible because not only is it charging 15 dollars for content that cant be obtained any other way but because it severally limits some people's ability to actually find the dlc. if i buy Botw by the time they stop producing the wolf link amiibo then i'm just straight out of luck arent i.
I'm not investing in them. I cant even use them on the 2DS.
However, I'm fine with the game itself. Id only get the amiibo to use for smash 4 on Wii U.
Gremlech Splatoon 2 are only gear and a few songs from the original Splatoon. And putting the Twitlight Bow with infinite range apart, there's nothing spectacular with the amiibos of Breath of the Wild. The costumes are Fan service and the weapons are great but not OP, the Lynel and the ancient weapons are faaaaar better! Also, Epona is Fan Service too, there are a few better horses.
Also they should of done what we thought they would of done unlocked them early. Like fusion mode. They could of done it where you have to beat hard mode to unlock it or. After beating the game use the amiibo to get it right then and there.
I really like this series. I'm hoping you already have a lot of new ideas for future installments.
Both awesome games...who am I kidding all Metroid games are awesome...save for Federation Force. And everything not gameplay related in Other M.
Still can't wait to get Samus Returns. Haven't been this excited since Metroid Prime 2 Echoes was announced.
I woke up with the Magmoor Caves theme in my head the other day
Nice
9:04 Get good. Very few things in DS are "unfair"
Also 92/100 is a bit high. I'd say 82-85/100 is a bit more fair
opinion m8 ^^ because for me i give this a solid 10/10 but hey its my opinion just like you have yours :).
Music director: he basically said its supposed to sound like a way and the music composer tries to make it
Just some crits if I may please. I think a better format for these types of videos is not which is better, but how these games were improved by their remakes and maybe a little gushing due to their good production values.More informative instead of comparative. Which is better is a personal opinion best left for those who played both of these games. I have my favorite, but it may not be yours. And that;s okay =) Thumbs up!
Samus Returns is such beautiful game. Visuals are so eye candy.
The final boss of Samus Returns was a real welome surprise!
But it ruins the calm ending of the original, and you already had the queen metroid
i cant agree with this one... zero mission is my favorite 2D metroid
That being said I was having a wonderful time with metroid samus returns and that last boss made my mind blown... that final boss sealed the deal for me calling it a masterpeice level remake
The winner is
The fantastic and one fan-game
AM2R
As I've said before, as long as the amiibo that lock content are available for me to go out and buy off the shelf in a couple weeks/months, I'm fine with the feature lock. If they're limited edition amiibo that sold out before pre-orders even started (yes, I know that's not possible, that's just what it feels like to a lot of people) and now we're all SoL, I seriously do not approve of the decision.
8:45 Ok, that sentence doesn't make any sense! xD
Dark Souls maybe hard, but the difference of it to other hard Games is though that it is very fair...
I listened to the points on this video, and though I can respect his opinion, I have to disagree. Playing Metroid: Samus Returns made me feel that the transition from a 2D game to a 3D one causes something to be lost for that exchange. Like how Sonic The Hedgehog is always much more enjoyable to play as a classic 2D sprite based game rather than a 3D one, I feel that they should have remade this game in sprite form instead of 3D. There were some welcome changes to the game, but they were minor. Those little chip cartridge things can only hold so much information, and 3D games takes more space than a 2D one. That sacrifice for 3D graphics and 3D vision costed the game to "cut corners" for lack of a better way of putting it. Every area had the same enemies. I think I can list the number of actual enemies (not including bosses) with just two hands. This caused the game to get repetitive for me and even annoyed me with those bat things that rush at you like every second when you move a few feet in any direction. Just felt like a lost opportunity to add more variations of enemies to take advantage of that melee counter feature, lost opportunities to have even more unique boss fights other than metroids, and so on. The music was another thing, which is another point I strongly disagree with in this video. The only music pieces I liked were the remakes of the Super Metroid games. It was nostalgic, and a nice nod to a great game. The actual new tracks felt a little uninspired to me. And in some areas, it was just flat out boring atmospheric tones. I think Zero Mission had better music than this, because at least it was actual music. If they released a soundtrack to this game that had only the new tracks and not the remakes, I wouldn't buy it. Don't get me wrong, I liked the game. Liked it enough to beat it. But I felt it could have been a better game if it was true 2D all around with sprites. The artistic style can really push the character animations, the atmosphere, the enemies, basically everything in ways a 3D game simply can't. Sorry Commonwealth Realm, but I think your review comparison is just hype.
What I'd change in SR is the melee counter. If there was a complete need to add some sort of protection mechanic against being rammed, I'd replace it with some sort of dodge (like shield+down in Smash) but the way it is it turned all enemies into predictable messes where they blink in white before ramming you so you can just dodge everyone. Not like the older 2D type enemies were any better, they just did their pattern and you were damaged if you accidentally touched them but all in all being able to casually backhand a huge dinosaur ass metroid in the face when it's about to bite you removes the fear in being up against that monster to begin with...
2:14 I don't think Zero Mission was her first bounty, she had already gained a reputation as a successful bounty hunter. That's why the federation chose her for the job of killing Mother Brain.
First official mission for the Galactic Federation after defecting from her police/military unit.
I don't have a problem with the amiibo stuff but the thing I don't like the look of is the counter mechanism. Maybe I'm wrong but the counter seems to ruin the point of avoiding hits in metroid.
The thing that most disappointed me is that they only added two new bosses into Metroid Samus returns, and honestly, that’s what makes me like am2r more and I really hope they let them finish, despite how unlikely that may be.
Do a video sheik vs zero suit Seamus
I love both games, but I honestly just enjoy playing Zero Mission more. Maybe it's some of the monotony present in Samus Returns that's a bit of a turn-off, or maybe it's all new things that took away some of the Metroid-feeling gameplay I'm used to, but Zero Mission just seemed like more fun.
Excellent analysis/comparison, i'm glad Samus is back in all her glory .
Love the new intro
Castlevania SOTN is all about them teleporters and thank Metroid SR for adopting this concept.
7:35 Gotta disagree on that one. I think Metroid maps should (for the ZM and SM style games) Stay the same. This goes for the prime games as well. It feels just so much more natural to have one large Crateria - like site at the top, with all the other areas connected to the top, but with small shortcuts in between to make travel a little easier later on, for going on a missile collecting rampage. Fast travel points feel slightly cheap, but i can see how it would help for new fans. I would love to see an option to disable them in future games.
Will you guys do an updated timeline with Samus Returns included?
Commonwealth Realm ayy that's good to here! Can't wait!
Now, I'm a bit confused. The opening of this game seems to suggest that Metroid 2's story happens before Prime. But, we know it's happened after The Prime trilogy and FF. So, what's the deal with that? Or am I misinterpreting it.
The Prime series doesn't really affect the 2D series that much, except the ending of SR references them, specifically Prime 3...
I love the new intro
I'm gonna do a bit of a hot take here and say that Zero Mission absolutely destroys Samus Returns in every possible way in terms of quality. My main gripe with Samus Returns was that, as someone who loves metroid and the 2D metroid games, it didn't at all feel like a 2D metroid game.
Being forced to stand in one place as you take aim at enemies in a constant stop/start pattern just to move on is not what I consider fun, it's what I consider tedium. In Zero Mission, I can keep on moving while taking care of enemies at the same time, it sounds simple and it is, however, compared to the constant stopping and starting in Samus Returns, this fluid blend of moving and shooting is just considerably more fun to play.
my favorite is still super metroid. it was my first metroid game and it's still the best in my opinion. maybe they'll do a remake of it. hoping the older 2d metroids come to the eshop whenever nintendo decides to release it on switch.
Are they ever going to put zero missions and make it available for the 3DS I want to buy it I wonder if they're ever put it on the eShop
I just started the video but it is a worthy comparison. AM2R was a fan game built with the look and feel of Zero Mission, and it was buttery smooth. Zero Mission I think is the best Metroid has ever felt on a 2D platformer. Fusion's movements felt a little slow and Super Metroid's just feel clunky from time to time compared to what ZM brought us. It would have been perfect to make a Metroid II remake from that engine. But Nintendo decided to give it a complete overhaul and create a whole new look and feel for Samus Returns. I like holding L to aim more directly, but jumping felt weird and switching between Aeion abilities was confusing. I found myself pushing A accidentally too many times, activating unwanted Aeion abilities. I got used to switching beams and missle on the touch screen and having a map down there constantly is a bonus though I wish it was more zoomed out so you could see the bigger picture. Overall. I felt Samus Returns did what it was supposed to do. It remade a much needed classic, and it brought Metroid back into the minds of players. Hype for Prime 4!!!
What got me is when you said "Dark Souls level of unfair". Dark Souls is definately not unfair, Dark Souls 2 on the other hand I would consider to be unfair at times.
My issue is not that I don't have the Amiibo. It's that I have an original 3DS, so no Amiibo functionality.
A lot of sound effects in MSR are remakes taken from mp1 believe it or not. You just have to take the time to recognize which ones are and which ones are completely original.
Do you mean sound track? A lot of them are remixes of the Metroid Prime tracks in this games are actually from Super Metroid
Wish these games also just came to the Switch as well. Even though technically Super Metroid can be played on The Switch(because I actually got to play on it recently) would be nice if these were stand alone games you could purchase rather them being stuck behind a membership you can have for only however long you decide to keep paying for it.
IT LACKS SPEED BOOSTER GODAMIT
Oh and for the amiibo content, Prime also had a bonus fusion mode unlockable if you connected your gba with metroid fusion to your GC, so basically you nedded a GBA + Metroid Fusion + A cable to link your gameboy to your GC, just for a model swap of samus. So yeah, I think just an amiibo for a harder mode and a model swap (given the fact that there is already a hard mode in game) is totally fine.
I disagree with Battle 4. Zero Mission may have more overall variety, but I had way more fun with every single Metroid I fought in Samus Returns, especially the final boss.
And, actually, I would argue there is just as much variety:
In Zero Mission, you get Ridley, Kraid, Mother Brain, Ridley Robot, the bug thing and the worm thing.
Each of which you take down by pumping missiles into. I mean, they are all different, yea, but we all know how these bosses go. Ridley flies around, stabs you with his tail and tries to pick you up while you fire copious amounts of missiles at you, Kraid is enormous and throws shit at you while you shoot him in the mouth, You shoot worm thing in the eye, Mother Brain kinda sits there while the environment fights Samus (though she also fires eye lasers now) and robo Ridley just kinda gives up.
In Samus Returns, you get 4 varieties of Metroids (each with a powered up + version as I call them)
Alphas float around and drop electric sparks at Samus as well as trying to ram her.
Gammas Fly around creating pulses, firing lightning bolts from the mouth, electrifying the ground, and charging into Samus. Some even run away, forcing you to hunt further ala Monster Hunter.
Zetas are the first fully terrestrial enemies, but they crawl all around the stage - launching green energy at you, shooting lightning bolts, breathing fire, etc. Not to mention a large part of the strategy to beat them involves you ripping them off the ceiling with your grapple beam and blasting away at them.
Omegas are hulking brutes that are hard to take down no matter what. They breathe fire, shoot lightning, electrify the floor, cause rocks to fall from the ceiling, do both of those at the same time, AND form a carapace over their weak point that you either have to fire multiple missiles at or hit with a Power Bomb.
I would argue how you tackle each of these is far more varied than the difference between Ridley and Kraid, and that's only the beginning.
From there you have the Queen Metroid who makes Samus skillfully use all of her techniques (Unlike Mother Brain who just makes sure you can jump and shoot good) Diggernaut who feels like something ripped straight out of the Metroid Prime series, and the final boss (which I will not spoil, since you took such care not to) which I consider to be the best damn boss in the entire franchise.
I am on my 3rd run of Samus Returns in a row (Beat Normal and Hard and am now on Fusion), largely because of how much I love fighting the bosses in this game. That is something I have never, ever done with a Metroid game.
Incidentally, I also disagree about music. The main thing I remember about the Samus Returns music (and I am playing the game as I type this) is that it re-uses the Metroid Prime Magmoor Caverns music in the fire areas. I know I enjoy the overworld music, but I jut can't remember it for the life of me, and no other score from this game sticks with me at all.
But I can hear Zero Mission's music clearly in my head (tinny as it may be thanks to the GBA sound software, but thats a flaw with the system. The scores themselves are still excellent.), and I haven't played that game in over a year. I still find myself humming that iconic Brinstar theme at random times throughout the day.
Regardless, though, I still agree with the final result. Samus Returns is easily the best 2D Metroid I have ever played. Maybe best overall, but I really need to replay Echoes and Corruption to solidify that.
I might be the only one who likes Fusion more than Zero Mission. Felt more challenging and I actually liked the narrative

Just saying. Lol
Great video by the way.
The difference is, you pay full price for Samus Returns and you get to watch this CZcams video for free
I really wish that Sami’s returns continued being more pixelated, so to speak like with the same detail as zero mission.
so... whats the better remake?
I can't wait its been so long since we've had a 2d metroid game
Metroid can have great stories, just that that game did it poorly. And federation force is a metroid game, just not the one we wanted.
it was never designed to be a metroid game from the start they were disigning a co op shooter and had the idea to stick the metroid name on it. thats why it feels like such a disconnect. NOT SAYING ITS GOOD OR BAD. ive never played it so my opinion counts for f all
They are never something exceptionally well made and elaborated. The thing is that Metroid works better that way; it would be necessarily more limited if it was always like Fusion.
i personally don't agree with you. the melee function felt clunky and stiff and the timing felt off. the space jumps new look just did not appeal to me and i also felt that the amiibo locks were plain stupid. on top of that i completed the game too easily even in fusion mode. the main reason was the map and the aeon abilites. i personally think that those were unwelcome addons on top of that what i enjoyed most about metroid was the backtracking because i could explore more areas i might have missed and notice more of the background. and with the serious music of zero mission made the exploring and looking for items more enjoyable. the teleportation station in samus returns was just too convenient and not enjoyable cause it took the fun of taking the scenic route to find all the items. i tried to ignore the teleportation station at first but i found that in some cases i needed it to get a faster game time and i hated that cause of the level design in samus returns.
Good thing the Aeion abilities (including the scan) are COMPLETELY OPTIONAL (with the exception of for some items puzzles, the scan otoh is NEVER needed). Don't blame the game just because you have the self control (aka utter lack there of) of a very young child... -_- ... I had no issues deciding not to use the scan & just pretending it didn't exist. To say it was merely "simple & easy" does a disservice to those words. That's how absurdly little effort it took to decide/do.
Do you blame games for having unlockable cheats too? That's basically what the Aeion abilities are. And just like using cheats, you don't have to use them if you don't want to. They are there to help newbies & those struggling with the game, NOT Metroid veterans.
CRAP!!! ZERO MISSION IS MUCH BETTER
Zero mission was shorter because it was a pure remake with a map that's why they added the zero suit part. Samus returns is a reimagined game so of course it would be longer. Both original games are much shorter if you have a map.
Now that I think about it, those teleports came from Castlevania that's like a woooah now Metroid copy something from Castlevania nice.
The game did need it in order to be really good to be honest. I like that they stayed true to Metroid 2's level design, and since M2's level design was very linear and had some labyrithy paths, add that with Metroid's traditional backtracking, and the size of MSR's map. Lack of fast travel would've been a legitimate deal breaker. Would be a good game to play through, but not a good game to 100% like every other metroid
Biggest issue with the locking content behind the amiibos is the obvious one. Scalpers buy and horde amiibos like they are hotcakes reselling them for easily twice their worth because nintendo refuses to make a decent supply of them. I'm not about to pay a scalper $60 ($20 more than the actual game mind you) for the Metroid amiibo to unlock fusion mode, that would be dumb. Yes, I love the looks of the amiibo, and I like the concept of unlocking things across multiple games, but the availability of the various amiibo though simply kills it for me.
A game being longer doesn't necessarily make it better. Zero Mission's brevity is one of the big reasons I enjoy it more than Super Metroid. The longer it takes to beat a game or complete it 100% the less willing I am to replay it because it's such a commitment.
Super Metroid really isn't any longer than Zero Mission. Both games can easily be beaten 100% in less than 3 hours even without speedrunning strats.
Samus Returns isn’t that long, either. If you are good in Metroid games you can easly beat it in under six hours, or even less. And that’s aiming for 100%..
Years late, but you only need to 100% once on one file anyways for the Chozo memories. The actual ending stuff is only determined by speed.
It makes it better for him and that's what matters
Aside from obviously better graphics and design, "Samus Returns" really isn't that good. Boss fights are there but seriously lacking; the featured abilities/weapons could have had more and newer abilities; "counterstrike" is in favor of the beams; you have to BUY the hard (fusion mode) difficulty; the counterstrike is really just the OFFENSIVE-DEFENSE to "Other M"s "Evasion" manuever; Speedbooster isn't in this one; and Metroid 5 is out the window.
THIS INSTALLMENT came out ridiculously too late that many players (including me) are somewhat surprised that it has gotten the positive recognition that it has gotten; AM2R is the better game, although its not an officially liscensed installment.
