- Well I did it. I finally fixed my Zizzo Forte folding bike. I spent the time and actually fixed it right and now it works perfectly.
No crazy over the top modifications...just normal gearing and a normal drivetrain set up.

When a chain wears out the inner distance between links increases. Cassettes that are heavy wear out over a longer period. Stretched chain on hard sprockets is always going to skip. You've got to match the components of the drivetrain. And maintain the chain. Commuting is the best environment for chain wear.

Great job man! And awesome report as usual
Great work Brian. Nice to have the Zizzo working properly again.
Hi Brian, glad you got it sorted.
Good work! It's always so satisfying when you persevere through a problem/difficulty & get it sorted out. I felt your feeling of satisfaction & accomplishment at the end of the video!
I’m just glad to have it fixed to be honest. Nothing worse than a bike that won’t shift right.
as usual great video from bryan
Thank you, I appreciate it.😃
Happy u fixed it. Now I'm more info from this review
Enjoy, learnt a lot about chain skipping, thanks !!
They recently came out with a 2023 version of the forte but after seeing this I'm afriad to get it.
Interesting Brian,very much so.
Man I love your channel. I love my folding bikes. I’m also looking for speed, one of my bikes has a 65t, but it’s a single speed. I’m going to try to get one of those for a Shimano 6 speed. Should be fun.
Give friction shifter a try; source from old quality bike (70s80s). I love the simplicity and tactile feel.
I had a similar issue with my folder. The Dealer said it was caused by a worn cassette and chain and could not be adjusted out. After having both replaced with new ones I haven't had a problem since.
When I was in high school my mother didn’t want to lose the remote control to the TV, so she hid the remote away so we wouldn’t have it, and wouldn’t lose it. So one day I looked at her and I said, so you’re afraid that we won’t have a remote, so you’re making us not have a remote? What I’m trying to say is I think you should ride the Brompton or Brompton‘s, and when you wear one out that you can’t fix it, replace it. What are you saving them for? Don’t get me wrong I love the channel and I love riding along with you. Just my thoughts
You got it all wrong my friend😁. I save the Brompton and my bike Friday for the “Fun” stuff. The cheap bikes I use for the mundane tasks, like commuting to work.
Brian: Love your channel and enjoy your videos. Would you comment on converting a Zizzo Forte for me and Campo for my wife to electric? We are in our 60's and like to travel. These bikes fit well into our trunk. They increase our range once we arrive, but those hills are getting taller and taller each year! I am looking at some kits (Swytch, BAFANG, others?) with little knowledge of function versus price. I'd love to see some real-life results that aren't on the company brochure. Thanks, and keep up the great work.
I think you’ve mentioned you had a 12-35 cassette. Don’t know which cassette it is but if it’s Shimano you can go 11-32/4/6 10s which will give you better speed with 11t smallest cog. Or upgrade to an XDR hub which afaik will allow you to go as low as 9t on the smallest cog.
Brian, my Tern Link D8 has a 1x8 and I’ve noticed it can get out of adjustment at times.
why not use the litepro chainrings with the hollowtech bottom brackets and also adjust by placing the chainring inside or outside the crank arm. so that you can adjust the chainline from the spacers of the bottom brackets. their chainrings go up to 58 tooth.
Where did you get the back lights for your zizzo forte what brand are you using?
I have the similar Liberte.....i believe the 52 in the front would be ideal for me. Could you please let us know what manufacturer/part number for the chainring and what width and/or specs for the bottom bracket? Thanks for all the sharing and experimenting you do!
Those black cranks do look a lot better on the bike. What taillights are you using? They look very bright. Nicely done getting the bike running perfectly. 👍
looks like the shifter is bent
i have the same issue with my via. have you tried cleaning and greasing the chain? i find that helps with the skipping.
Can you recommend the Zizzo Ferro? I don't have much money being retired.
Hey I'm new to bikes but looking to replace my car in a small town which I think would work for me. I was looking at a e bike from Tern but decided best to wait for newer technology. Now looking at the Tern Verge s8i, would that suffice for commuting to work and also getting small amounts of groceries about a basket size if not a little bit more?
I picked it for less maintenance with drive belt and if it matters I have some hills here and there but nothing to crazy
Isn’t that guy at freedom folding bikes still around?
Are you able to make any adjustments on the cassette side instead of the drivetrain side?
With `chain skipping` the first thing I check for are stiff chain link(s), then bent chainrings & cassette sprockets / teeth . It can also be caused by a meshing mismatch between a worn chain and unworn chainrings / cassette or visa versa.
It may have been the chainline ? You said you moved the chainring inward compared to the original ( non skipping ) setup. When you filmed the skipping you were in the smallest sprocket . Did the skipping improve as you changed to the neighboring sprocket , say from 11T to 13T ?
I think it unlikely that a bent derailleur caused this issue as things would not have improved when you changed the front chainring. For the same reasons its not stiction ( static friction ) in gear cable / housings.
Is there an internal hub alternative?
Is the Alfine8 strong enough?
Unfortunately, derailer drivetrain are to tune correctly. That is why I prefer hub gears, they are reliable. Sure, a bit heavier and more expensive.
What is the exact width and dimensions of the sunlit bottom bracket in mm?
Is it one of the SL-26 Sealed Bottom Brackets?
Brian, perhaps you should consider switching over to a Shimano Alfine 8 or 11 speed rear hub. They're very reliable and I believe your shifting issues would disappear. Food for thought.
Yeah, but that would require redoing the rear wheel and since the shifting issue is now solved I think I'll just roll it the way it is. I don't want to spend that much money on this bike. Thanks for the suggestion though👍🙂
So would converting the rig to a friction shifter. It would be cheaper too.
@@ibikeunfolded A month ago I had my folding bike, A Dahon Vitesse, similar to your Zizzo Forte, converted to a Shimano Nexus 7 hub. Due to the small 20 inch wheel, the gears are spaced close towards each other, I love that. The down side is that my cruising gear is nr. 6. That leaves only nr. 7 for higher speed. The rear wheel sprocket is already the smallest/ fastest.
So I assume the gear ratio is too slow for you, Mr. I Bike Unfolded.
How did you get into folding bikes?
Did you pass along these mods to Zizzo ? I'm sure they'd at least entertain those changes!
They are making changes of their own - excited to see what they will come up with.
Gosh, what a frustrating experience to go through! Glad you were able to sort it out. Good that you are handy with the tools, have spare parts, etc. I can understand the desire to go faster, but was it really that much of a difference? I mean, was your average 'stock parts speed 15 mph and with the upgrades 20 mph (if everything would have worked)? I don't know, certainly depends on the commute difference where speed would matter more vs. time.
Cadence has a lot to do with speed...everyone has a cadence they are comfortable with...when I spin at a comfortable cadence I am at 18 miles an hour on my current gear set up. That 60 tooth set up I was at 21-22 mph at my comfortable cadence. I can spin outside my comfort zone and get up to 21 on my current set however, I much prefer to stay in my comfort zone on commutes.
@@ibikeunfolded Ah, yep! Well, the Zizzo is probably still 'faster' than the Brompton @ the same cadence, I imagine? Smaller wheels an all...
@@ph5915 I don’t notice that much of a speed difference between the two the way I got the Brompton set up, however I do notice much more resistance at higher speeds on the Brompton.
@@ibikeunfolded Hmm, interesting...
I have the Liberté and I changed the front chain ring to a 52 in April and used the original chain and have not had any problems riding over 600 miles with it. Unfortunately, I find the 52 doesn't give me enough power so I would like to go to a either 56 or 58. I know I'll have to get a longer chain. With the Liberté having 8 speed, I wonder if I will encounter similar problems as you have. Any thoughts?
I put a 60 tooth on my liberate with no shifting issues. However, the occasional chain drop was kind of a pain.
Also, I used the original chain until it wore out, then input the correct length on it.
@@ibikeunfolded Thanks for the quick reply Brian. Just to confirm, you kept the original chain length for 60 tooth chain ring and had no problem shifting to the lowest gears if needed?
I am a new guy to this bike i just ordered it and it will be coming next week. It would be awesome if we can get a link to all the parts needed to ensure we dont go through this same ordeal.
You shouldn’t have the same ordeal, I went way too big on the front gear which caused problems. Most of the parts I put on the bike came out of my supply which I’ve had for a while. I don’t remember where I got most of it. I will see if I can get links to similar parts….
you got automatic transmission without paying extra - it's a feature! 😄
Random automatic shifting transmission. It will surprise you...never the right gear at the right time.😂
@@ibikeunfolded I just bought a Campo for trails and campgrounds... hoping for the best 👌
I do think a 60 tooth range is too high for a folding bike. That king of gear is more for a single speed bike or a bike with a long chain stay. Typically chain drives are good to about 4 :1 I imagine you are trying for more than that. I also bet the 60 tooth gave you fits with the smaller cogs unless the alignment was perfect.
It almost sounds like your freewheel is bad and popping the dogs.
😁. Got it fixed now.
@@ibikeunfolded congratulations! That had to be super annoying
I came across your CZcams videos and I am very impressed with your knowledge of a different Folding bike manufactures I am seriously wanting to get a folding bicycle I would love to have an opportunity to talk to you and pick your brains. Are you on Facebook or should I perhaps call you or something that like that to make a right decision. Thank you
