The shirt with squares on it is called Batakari (meaning war shirt), and war frequently worn in wars. The squares are amulets made of wood or steel stitched with other amulets of various shapes on the shirt and, on many cases, hats, forming a kind of armour that would, in many cases work (against bullets at least). The Akans believed that the amulets made the warriors nigh invulnerable
