Fix Pressure Washer Unloader Valve in 2 Minutes

  • If your pressure washer is not building pressure (and the engine is surging), there could be a few different causes. One of them is a sticking unloader valve.
Here we show you how to make sure the unloader valve on your home pressure washer is clean in just 2 minutes.
If this does not fix your pressure washer and make it build pressure again, then it is likely a water pump problem. We tackle that next time.

@@HNXMedia I took it out and the pin works perfectly fine. I even cleaned the little holes on the side. It's still doing the same thing. I notice though, the unit won't stall out if I take the gun off and just let water run through it. I put the gun back on and hold down trigger, unit it ok. Let go of trigger, pump sounds like metal noises before stalling out. I wonder if something on the inside of pump broke

@@ShyRage1 That could very well be it too. Replacing a pump is super easy and on most unit only cost about $80. I had one that was completely shredded on the inside. Check out this video here for How easy it is to swap out a pump: czcams.com/video/Np9c0MLnUv8/video.html

@@HNXMedia I ended up taking the pump off and apart. I cant get to the center of the pump for some reason but I found out if I shake it, It sounds like loose bearings. I'd say the pump is shot, your thoughts? Now, how do you disconnect the line going into the pump? On mine, it's not as simple as just unscrewing like a water hose.

@@gavva2010 It sounds like the pump is not building pressure. I have had to replace/repair my pump twice. The internal valves are often plastic and they corrode/crack. If the unloader has completely failed beyond being able to be cleaned, it is often cheaper to replace an entire pump than just individual parts - and they are super easy, usually just a couple bolts. This is what I call an AWESOME comment! I know you don't have time to listen to some fool ramble on about the history of pressure washers or the science behind how they work. You have work to do. You just want to fix your pressure washer and move on. I am certainly glad you found my video useful and I hope it assisted in fixing your washer. Time to get back to work. Peace.

Thanks for not taking 20 minutes to explain your whole life up to that moment. I was all but ready to buy a new pump, low pressure...saw this video, did exactly as instructed, had a bit of trouble getting the thing out, used some Blaster and tried to loosen with a vise grip (gently )...then finally it popped out with a screw driver , needed cleaning, I did as instructed, greased it, and got the piston moving, and cleaned out the little opening and it went back in much easier...its late, I will fire it up tomorrow...either way THANK YOU

Direct and to-the-point Thanks! My other pump was under warranty so I got a new one. So I'm going to check the unloader valve on the old one and if that's the problem I'll definitely reinstall it and see if that was the fix thanks again.

Great video, but when you mentioned put a little bit of grease on the O-Rings, you should have mentioned that you should be using a SILICONE BASED grease, NOT a Petroleum based automotive grease. (Any swimming pool owner is familiar with Silicone based O-Ring lube / Jack’s Lube is just one common brand.) Petroleum based grease will swell rubber O-Rings and will typically make an old dry O-Ring seal in a pinch, BUT it will make it much more difficult to remove the unloader when (not if) you have to clean it again.
