  • The sweep single leg takedown is a basic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique that can be used to take down an opponent who is standing. It is a relatively simple technique to learn, but it can be very effective when used correctly.
To perform a sweep single leg takedown, start by positioning yourself in front of your opponent with your lead leg slightly ahead of your rear leg. Bend your knees and keep your weight centered. Reach out with your lead hand and grab your opponent's gi sleeve around their tricep. Use this grip to pull their arm across their body and towards the ground as you circle around their lead leg to secure the single leg entry.
Once you have a good grip, pull your opponent towards you and step to the side with your lead leg. From here, if your opponent does not fall to the ground, you can finish the single leg however you like: run the pipe, tree top, switching to a double leg, etc.
The traditional sweep single from wrestling is very useful for nogi jiu jitsu because a lot of the posture and grips are similar between the two sports. When we have to worry about the grips on the gi while standing is when this takedown can get tricky.
I hope this video helps you with your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu takedowns. Give it a try and drill with a partner, be sure to let me know how it goes, cheers!
