    I'm African and there's some truth in the statement that we just grab and do not ask. That is because we come from societies and cultures which are not based on individualism but communalism. There are some good things and bad things in that. In some African cultures if you ask your friend for permission before taking something it can be interpreted as an insult. Your friend may be insulted. If you take without asking it shows your friend that you trust them and consider what is yours to be theirs, and vice versa.
    I think there should be a limit to this important and beautiful cultural practice and value of sharing because it can be abused and misunderstood.

    As a black man and a African-American I believe topics like this only cause divisions between black people living on the continent of Africa and black people living in America.
    Why do I feel this way ?.
    We never hear European-Americans saying how different they are from European living in Europe.
    We never hear Chinese-Americans saying how different they are from Chinese living in China.

    As far as phenotype is concerned, I agree that many black americans look like we can be from anywhere in Africa. This is because we are a genetic combo of many different african ethnic groups. Slavers were very selective of the people they oppressed in terms of skill sets, but they were not at all picky about ethnic groups when it came to breeding our ancestors.

    Yes, there are really big differences. It's not a bad thing. Anybody that is not from your country is very different. Africans are different from each other on the continent. Same thing with caribbean people. Afro americans are even very different from black canadians, and the black british and we grew up in white dominated countries. African americans used to behave more like africans for centuries. However, due to some very bad american experiences, that has changed.

    • @martinsmith2258
      @martinsmith2258 Před 3 lety +4

      I’m African American and I know a bit about the black people in SC. The reason they look so African is because many of them aren’t mixed. On the coast of SC there are the Sea Islands. On the sea islands enslaved Africans kinda took care of them selves because white people didn’t want to be in that kind of environment with mosquitoes and such. And the sea islands were hard to access from mainland South Carolina. Because those Africans were isolated, many of them retained a lot of African culture. The name of these people from the coastal region of South Carolina is the Gullah and Geechee. They still do the same basket weaving that is done in Sierra Leone. Their language, Gullah, is very similar to Caribbean dialects especially Bahamian and Bajan dialects. They Gullah language derived from mostly Sierra Leone krio, Igbo, Mende, and mandinka languages and words. They also cook some of the same dishes that you’d find in the African continent. There’s so much for me to explain about the Gullah Geechee that it’s easier if you just google or CZcams “Gullah Geechee people”. It’s really fascinating. The funny thing is you went to SC and saw all those people that looked Africans and probably had no idea that they probably have so much more in common with you. Also, there was a need for rice farming which is why Africans were brought from Sierra to South Carolina. They were experts with rice. Fun fact: 40% of all enslaved Africans brought to America came through the Charleston South Carolina port. The rest of the 60% came mostly through other ports in New Orleans and Georgia. If you go to New Orleans the black folks also look very unmixed.

    Is it correct to compare one country (U.S.A) with a large continent called Africa where several countries with different cultures live in ? Do black in the U.S.A. have something with common with black people in several African countries ? Yes, the race (skin colour, hair and body construction). Culturally, there are Americans and there are Nigerians, Tanzanians, Kenians, South Africans, Ugandians and etc... I believe that many black people within the U.S.A. from a certain cultural and educacional level will have more in common with their caucasians, latins, asian U.S.A. born people than the ones born in Africa because they have been raised within the American culture, habits and values and not in any of the African countries culture. That's my opinion. For me, there are black americans and black africans...that's all !

      @goodkarma99I don’t think that would be true for most AA. Most of us believe America is our country. People around the world has been blessed by the passion and courage of those who dared to stand up and say black is beautiful . In the past there were few if any positive images of black people but black people make sure to change that . Today , there are examples of black excellent all over the world .
    Now , I think that it is important to me to opion that blackness is not African . To many people like myself Blackness doesn't explain how something appear . Instead blackness implied unity and solidarity whereas Africa doesn't have such black contextual significance maybe that is to be expected considering that people can in Africa tend to think national and tribal .
    The better question to conserve to is the meaning of what black is ,in human terms .

    The agressiveness is different and being defined differently by each group. Africans (in general) are more VERBALLY agressive in TONE compared to most African Americans about the mundane. There is a lot of emphasis. And we are speaking about when speaking with those outside of the group. African americans seem to be more aggressive physically, with body positioning. Africans tone is more monotonous, meaning if they are speaking there isn't usually a change in their tone throughout a conversation. African Americans tend to start out at a lower place (in a general conversation) and escalate to more aggression for select words. Those are some of the differences Ive noticed, especially as a teacher observing conversations.

    As a black American I used to try and deny any admixture because of the connotations that come from having mixed genealogy, but I couldn't fully embrace the African culture either because of my American experiences.
    As I have discovered more about myself and my heritage I have come to accept everything that makes me who I am, the good and bad of it. My ancestry consists of multiple African countries without factoring in any non African genes.
    I at least have a vague connection to the Congolese ancestry because of the Geechee culture being isolated from the mainland, a DNA test confirmed as much, but also added other African ethnicities to the list.
    Given that information I'm still spread between multiple cultures to learn about, but I have to wonder if I would be embraced in the homeland of my ancestors as not every country in Africa consider themselves equal.
